It's seamless because the notch is inside the menu bar, nothing sticking out, while you can't say that when the notch has split the menu bar to 2 because then it will disrupt a menu bar.
The point is for the notch to take the unused space in the middle of the menu bar. How is that disrupting the menu bar? And how is that pixel sized remnant of the menu bar at the bottom of the notch make it any less “disruptive“?

This Mac is exactly what professionals have been clamoring for. Many had given up Apple would ever listen. It prioritizes performance over everything. It provides pro interfaces and display. Apple for too long ignored needs of customers, and it finally listened And built a pro machine. And even with all this power,it’s still an iconic Mac.

if you want svelt and fanless and notch less, get an Air. They are incredibly powerful too. Apple is not forcing you into a specific choice any longer, it’s providing real choice.

Every pro I know is excited and in disbelief over these new pro Portables. Apple is going to sell a ton of them.

Sigh. Again we have the 'pro' argument. For every 'Pro' you give me that hated the old design I will give you two that loved it. This new design is a cross between a terribly bland Huawei chassis and an enormous compromise on the screen in the form of a notch. I've read through all seven pages of this thread and not a single person has said they love the notch, people either think its ugly or they attempt to justify it on a function over form argument.

But this laptop has M1 Pro/Max so will sell very well because a lot of people, professional or otherwise, will overlook the fact their laptop looks like it should be cemented into a wall and get on with their day to day business with these faster chips.

Then you will be wrong. Having 2 menu bars (left and right) that can contain menu of one app is a bad design.
Why does it need to be two menu bars in such a design? It can just be one menu bar like it always is but there’s just a notch in the middle without it sticking out past the bottom of the notch. But now that you’ve mentioned it, all app menu items are always on the left of the menu bar while status icons are to the right. So even if it is two separate menu bars like you assume, it still wouldn’t be a bad design.

That's true. No one likes the notch. It's something that, when it's gone, everyone will be glad it's gone. No one is going to say "I miss the notch" the way some miss the TouchBar or the thinner design.

The iPhone notch could be argued to be a compromise. It's a way to fit FaceID components while also maximizing the phone screen space. The alternative is a hole punch, but there can't be a hole punch when you have FaceID. But there's no need for it on the MBP. It's purely an aesthetic choice. They chose a notch over having a "forehead". I personally would've preferred the "forehead" any day, since that's what we've always had and it's effectively there in full-screen mode anyway. The notch is just ugly and unnecessary.

This new design is a compromised device, with an attempt to please everyone, which never turns out well.

I was undecided between the two sizes and eventually decided to go with the 14" inch model.

Honestly, these new MacBooks are kinda ugly but I'm sure they will grow on me.
The Space Gray color (at least as seen in these photos, apparently shot under fluorescent lighting) looks especially drab in this new MBP design. It may be time for me to return to the silver.

yep, silver all the way on these models. The black keyboards will contrast nicely with the silver, where as you say SG is drab.

I know that it's superficial talking about design over functions but honestly we are speaking about apple and I except at least a minimum effort on the eye side. This is just a raw machine for work that like I said is probably fantastic but I simply don't think was necessary to do it so ugly.
Yep. They lost their way after this one...

Same here, can’t commit without seeing that notch first. 🤦‍♂️
That’s why you own an iPhone?

You guys need to get over the notch. It’s here to stay for at least the next 4 years. It’s also coming to the MacBook Air. Apple always unifies the design.

If you ask me - and I know you care - the notch is ugly but how else will people know I spent $3k on my touchless iPad Pro with a built in keyboard computer??!

In comparison to 2020 MBA/MBP this is huge disappointment for me:

  • notch is really distracting, you can't hide menu anymore - at the end more screen estate is wasted. Looks like designers made a notch, just because it was possible with miniled,
  • no more wedge shape - which was great for wrists comfort, now it is gone (ok that was only MBA feature - but it will be gone in new MBAs),
  • return of fans - guarantee for noise and dust clutter over time,
  • perceived performance increase over M1 is minimal - can't justify price increase over 2020 MBA/MBP.
  • magsafe is actualy step backward - I use USB for charging with magsafe adapters - so I can have single charger for every device
It is a big disappointment that such great hardware (M1, miniled) came in such bad package. It looks to me like Apple has the best engineers in the world, but their designers are completely out of touch from ergonomics. Honestly the package looks like subversion action of Intel agents. Or Apple is creating problems, so they can later "fix" them and monetize on them. Pros works for 8-16 hours a day on such computers, they have to be ergonomic. I'm sticking with MBA M1 (16/512) probably for next couple of years.

They didn’t unify the design of the touchbar.

Fortunately for me there is plenty of legroom left in my M1 MacBook Pro, if that will last for 4 years though, I think maybe not. But I’m going to try!

Also, because I seem to be one of the few that actually loves the touchbar and uses it daily… The touchbar is an extremely useful tool, but Apple never fully embraced it so why would they expect their users to? Unless you actually found a good use for it (which I did, but so many others didn’t), then it’s easy to see why people thought it should go.

Well, this isn't really meant to replace the M1 MBA. That should be coming out next year. Will be disappointing if the next MBA has a notch, but I don't see how it won't have one at this point.

This is not a replacement for the Air. This replaces the MacBook Pros.

The notch is in a new expanded area of the screen where they are putting the menu.

These MBPs always has fans. The new ones are designed to use the fans less often.

These are at least twice as fast as the M1 and the GPU is multiple times as fast. The M1 is for Apples low end machines. These are the performance laptops for professional use. Definitely worth the small increase in price from the systems they replace.

If you want to you can continue to use USB-C for charging.

You are throwing shade at the designers but they have produced a phenomenal product that balances a range of needs in a form that don’t compromise functionality on the alter of sleekness the way the 2016 designs did

Whats really bugging my OCD is the ACTUAL curve gradient of the notch to the edge of display of the MacBook Pro, it looks to square to me at the corners not like the iPhone that's more rounder (softer looking) and mirrors the opposite corner gradient of its display.

Then to further bug me the bottom edge of the panel has 90 degree corners ?

View attachment 1876165View attachment 1876166

Wow, now I can't unsee that. Rounded top corners that don't "flow" with the notch and the bottoms are hard 90 degree angles. /facepalm

I'm gonna miss the touch bar. It was very convenient to tap dialog buttons ("Save", "Cancel", "Record" and the like). Now I will have to resort to the very cumbersome precision trackpad ballet again.

Also, why have function keys? F1 F2 F3... ???? I understand that there are folks from 1965 who need those for their cotton weaving mills, but shouldn't these keys have gone with the CD-ROM drive?? Innovation hello?
