I miss my powerpc

When was the last time a powerpc chip had shared graphics memory?

Expect to see a lot more crap from the apple marriage Inhell

Imagine how great a g5 mini could have been......

Here's the bottom line....

Today's announcements should've simply been in a press release and an update to the Apple website. There was absolutely no need to create all this mystery and invite the press to Cupertino to tell them about an iPod accessory and a refreshed Mac Mini. It would've been received much better without all the hype.

And by the way, Apple has missed a HUGE opportunity to position the Mac Mini as the new centerpiece to your home theater. People are dying to find a replacement to Tivo and Apple could've totally cashed in on it today. Unless they have something else up their sleeves....

Meh... The Intel graphics doesn't really bother me that much. It would be more than adequate for a media center solution since I don't have an HDTV or anything like that.

What really chafes my willy is the fact that they jacked the price up by $100. I've got a pretty tight budget for this and was really hoping I could get a FrontRow loaded Mac Mini for $499. I don't think I can justify $600 for nothing more than a media center. 🙁

No you just need a DVI to HDMI cable, nothing else.
That's exactly what I said. A DVI to HDMI cable is an adapter. Plain and simple.

Does no one read through the thread anymore? We've been through this. It's not $100+ like the other guy claimed, and there's no conversion involved. But you do need an unusual cable to get it all to work.

Ok, this was a step back, maybe. But, there will be better things coming soon...just wait until WWDC!

In regards to the G5 Mini...yeah it would be great until 1 minute past boot it started ON FIRE....that thing would be a fire hazzard, even if it had no case.

But, I am with you on the Integrated card...I'm beginning to wonder how well this thing will do when Lion comes out...will Mini users need to chuck it to upgrade? I sure hope not, or we are back to sub-5% levels again. Eesh!

While this has been fun to read, sorry, its in the wrong place. Go flame each other over adapters and cables in another thread or forum. It started out somewhat relevant to the Mini, but has devolved VERY quickly.

Welcome to MacRumors, kid.

And strictly speaking, this is still about connecting the mini to an HDTV set.

heh... games on a mac...

sorry, i just had too. your complaining about the lack of a graphics card on a small and relatively cheap machine.

heh, games on windows....

sorry, i play WoW on my ancient eMac and laugh at all the windows users who suddenly disappear in an instance and return after 5 minutes saying they crashed.....

and i bet that crappy shared GPU everyone is complaining about is at least as good as what i have in a freaking eMac!

Why is everybody upset about the graphics chip included with the Mac Mini. From the specs, this is not to be a gaming machine. Nor does it look like it's supposed to be your computing Mac.

Steve made specific reference to the fact that it streams video, music and photos (media) from any PC in the house. And what? It can be connected to your television. Wow! So can any Mac. Why mention that bland point. The point is - the Mac Mini should be connected to you television or better yet, your HDTV. In fact, it only has one video out - which leaves room for... well just your TV. More so, don't look for an airport express video anytime soon. Take your $129 (more like $169+) you were saving for an Airport Express Video (AEV) and apply it to your new Mac Mini. It's what you're going to get. And it's what you're going to want and need. You want Hi-Def out of a component the size of the Airport Express - doubtful. Remote control... yeah this has it. The frowned upon video processor is the perfect match for the Mac Mini (aka AEV), see specs below. Soon, you'll have the blu-ray DVD inside. By the way, when Apple sets up their newly purchased $45mil+ data center this will be sitting right there on top of your Apple branded HDTV and you'll be streaming or buying movies straight to your system and listening on your Apple sound system. Make no mistake Apple will take the consumer living room from Sony while Sony is still playing with their left over beans...

-Up to 2048x1536 resolution for both analog and digital displays
-Consumer Electronic display (Digital TV) support
-Display hot plug support to automatically detect new display connection while system is operating (CRT and DVI)
-Two Serial Digital Video Out (SDVO) ports for flat-panel monitors and/or TV-out support via Advanced Digital Display 2 (ADD2) cards or Media Expansion Cards
-Intel Media Expansion Cards available providing TV-out and PVR capability
-Multiple display types (LVDS, DVI-I, DVI-D, HDTV, TV-out, CRT)
-Dual screen support through ADD2 digital video devices
-HDTV 480i/p, 576i/p, 720i/p and 1080i/p display resolution support
-Interlaced Display output support
-16x9 and 16x10 Aspect Ratio for widescreen displays
-2x2 Panel Scaler

wow, so as of right now: 384 positives - 848 negatives = people hate the intel mac mini?

I'd say that most negatives are directed at:
- the new entry level price point (100$US higher, which is weird since it's only 70$CAN higher for us). 😀
- the Intel GPU that shares system memory

Indeed. Same motherboard, same parts, etc. Just need to make a new casing, new packaging and a new webpage.

A headless iMac Core Duo? With an ATI X1600/128MB and a 3.5" drive? I'll buy that!

Ah...the return of the "headless iMac" rumors. I thought the mini had killed those!

The previous mini model, 1.5 G4 64 mb dedicated GPU was a better machine and better value than this.

Disappointing

The only question I have is if this new Mini will be faster then my current g4 dual 1ghz MDD with a 5200 fx? How will this Mini stack up under Rosetta in Photoshop (CS1) vs my dual 1ghz MDD?

What about daily routine stuff? I sometimes have a lag or a bit of sluggishness with my Powermac with 1gig of ram doing some routine stuff.

Well when Apple said that joining intel would give us the best possible computer yet, I think Apple in my mind has failed at this with todays new products.

Mac Mini.

Single Core 1.5 Intel or a Power PC 1.42?
The Mhz speed isn't much, I don't see it being worth the update. Plus 99% of things will run faster on the old Mac Mini.

Dual Core Intel 1.66Ghz a 1.42Ghz Power PC.
At this stage I would still go for a 1.42Ghz.

Come on the Solo will be faster, for what the Mini is meant for, internet,AIM Pages ect, And 1.66Ghz Dual will SMOKE THE 1.42 G4, the intel with 2Gb ram, it might even bet it in Rosata

My apologies if it's been answered already, (I skipped a few pages in the thread 😱 😉) but does the new Mac mini use 2.5" hard drive or did Apple upgrade it to a 3.5" hard drive?

I like it. People just think the Mini is supposed to be equivelant of a PowerMac or evern an iMac. It's aimed at totally different market and, therefore, does not require a blazing top of the line graphics system. As is, the integrated is probably good enough for all casual users and most modern games (not at highest graphics settings or screen mode).

My needs are such that the Mini is not for me. I am waiting patiently for the Intel PowerMac which I will expect to be ludicrously fast in all regards.

I've decided not to buy the thing. Compared to my several-years-old G4 tower, it has inferior graphics, a slower and smaller hard drive, and isn't compatible with my studio display. I also worry that the performance of the software I use most will not be enhanced much or at all due to emulation. I wanted to use front row, but this isn't the right way. Maybe I'll wait a year for new imacs to cut down the price of the ones that are currently out there.

it's the same form factor, so it's still a 2.5" drive. except that it's now all 5400 rpm and starting at 60GB.

Apple's Solution

I think that Apple will have a serious problem on their hands if they don't combat this Intel Integrated Graphics problem. A cold reception is the last thing they need during and important transition like this. I'm not just talking about the Mac mini here, this Integrated Graphics has the potential of affecting the entire Mac line. What Apple didn't anticipate was that many people have had a lousy experience with integrated graphics chipsets. One of the categories that is missing from the Mac mini hardware info page on apple.com is "Graphics".

Mac users take the graphical performance of their machines very serious, if they think there is a compromise in performance then there is going to be Hell to pay. Apple needs to provide information about the graphical capabilities of the new Mac mini. People need to know what kind of improvement there is in using the Intel GMA chipset over the older ATI 9200. Customers need to understand what types of benefits come from change in design like this.

I stated earlier that I was really put off from buying a new Mac mini when I read about the integrated graphics, but if Apple is able to demostrate that their decision is a definite improvement then I may reconsider. I would much prefer dedicated graphics in the Mac mini, but if the integrated solution is not too shabby I might go ahead and buy.

if all you want is front row, you can already install and run it on your G4 tower.

A hundred dollar price increase for intel integrated graphics. I'm glad to see intel is calling some of the shots for all of their development money! (not!) 😎

I believe 2.5".
