My apologies if it's been answered already, (I skipped a few pages in the thread 😱 😉) but does the new Mac mini use 2.5" hard drive or did Apple upgrade it to a 3.5" hard drive?
2.5 iirc.

I think that Apple will have a serious problem on their hands if they don't combat this Intel Integrated Graphics problem. A cold reception is the last thing they need during and important transition like this. I'm not just talking about the Mac mini here, this Integrated Graphics has the potential of affecting the entire Mac line. What Apple didn't anticipate was that many people have had a lousy experience with integrated graphics chipsets. One of the categories that is missing from the Mac mini hardware info page on apple.com is "Graphics".

Mac users take the graphical performance of their machines very serious, if they think there is a compromise in performance then there is going to be Hell to pay. Apple needs to provide information about the graphical capabilities of the new Mac mini. People need to know what kind of improvement there is in using the Intel GMA chipset over the older ATI 9200. Customers need to understand what types of benefits come from change in design like this.

I stated earlier that I was really put off from buying a new Mac mini when I read about the integrated graphics, but if Apple is able to demostrate that their decision is a definite improvement then I may reconsider. I would much prefer dedicated graphics in the Mac mini, but if the integrated solution is not too shabby I might go ahead and buy.
agreed. steve was very quiet about the graphics capability of this new mini...but the graphics power itself is not too shabby (there was an earlier post listing the specs of both this integrated graphics chip and the 9200)...apple would do well to educate more people about the improvements over the 9200 in using this integrated chipset...

I think Apple raises the prices on their products so they can lower them the next year and try to make it look like a great deal.

i was planning on buying the older mini but with the current price increase, im not really looking forward to it. I only needed it as a media center type machine and these new specs wont do jack for me.

I agree, a intergrated graphic card is pure crap. my dad got a HP Desktop for his office and it has an intergrated graphics card. It can hardly run WoW and it dosent run Command and Conquer at all.

I feel like the price is a little too high now for switchers. they either need to offer another version of the iMac at $999 ot $1099 and keep these $100 cheaper or need an inbetween model.

Some say this isnt a gaming machine or editing machine and ill give you that, but if so, why the raise in power. the Mini sure as hell didnt need it.

I see this as a toy for others who own a mac and just want something new. I dont see this as much of a switcher machine anymore BECAUSE

most PC users arent into the wireless streaming and blue-tooth and such. they dont get that whole scene. they get the idea of iLife and edit home vids and make a nice DVD. they dont get any of it at all so those specs arent needed for a entry machine. so price hike will only keep people away

it's the same form factor, so it's still a 2.5" drive. except that it's now all 5400 rpm and starting at 60GB.

Cool, thanks. This was my thinking as well, but I wanted to check for myself and another member who had inquired about this as well. 🙂

Edit: And thanks to you as well lozion. 😉

I'd say that most negatives are directed at:
- the new entry level price point (100$US higher, which is weird since it's only 70$CAN higher for us). 😀
- the Intel GPU that shares system memory

exactly. the core duo chip doesn't cost much more than the core solo, and yet the price differential between the two machines is outrageous. and shared memory between gpu and system? that is supposed to bring the price down, not up.

Do you guys think the old mac mini will be on sale at apple.com soon?
Probably. And since the old one has a real graphics card it's probably still superior for many applications. WTF was apple thinking going with integrated graphics? That's like putting a rusty chassis on a race car. I have to say, this is the worst keynote apple has done since Steve came back in 97.

A hundred dollar price increase for intel integrated graphics. I'm glad to see intel is calling some of the shots for all of their development money! (not!) 😎
why is this the only thing people can fixate on? no, the $100 increase isn't good news, but there really are a lot of upgrades. 5400rpm drive, more USB ports, air express and BT standard, faster processor, faster frontside bus, remote, optical in and out. plus, the integrated card, while not great, is still better than the previous 9200. get over it already🙄

How many switchers need all that? Show me a Switcher that NEEDS!!! BT standard and I will give you a Mac Mini for free.

Further, 7200 RPM? For What? Given those specs, a 4200 should be fine for entry level. Guh. 1 step forward, 2 steps back...kinda like Paula Abdul, but interesting and not "bad".

You guys are missing something... (or perhaps I'm too picky?...)

Anyhow, the starting price of the Macmini is 599 USD. HOWEVER, it has only 2x256 Ram, and 799 USD one also has the same configuration of RAM.

With the shared memory graphic card thingy dragging Macmini on... we definitely need atleast 1 gb of memory don't we?

100 USD to upgrade from 2x256 to 2x512....

Well that makes 699 and 899 ...
It's not a switcher apple for sure...

Am I missing something??
I'm assuming the 7200rpm listed on the Apple website is a mistake, and its 5400rpm as specified on the Mac Mini spec page. I'm being pessimistic and assuming the lower speed is the true one.

The joke I was attempting to make was referring to the fact that there's currently a class action lawsuit against Apple because they failed to mention that when they say "20Gb" they mean 20,000,000 bytes and not 20,971,520 bytes. If that can be a class action lawsuit, mistakenly over quoting the drive speed can be also!

Sorry. I won't use a winky smily in future.

Not to be "off-topic"🙄 but..

That Boombox kinda grows on ya the more you think about it..

As for Steve ? He looks typically Steve Jobs to me.

yes, you will need more ram...but even without the integrated graphics, you would still need more ram because rosetta is a ram hog.

once again, another "potential switcher" looking at the bottom line...have fun waiting for vista!

good catch. Yeah, I am thinking way more that this is just a quick bridge. They will inevitably put Conroe in it, then maybe we can see some mileage out of the "economy" rating. In any case, its kinda hard to make an economy computer with top of the link chips (Core Duo, Core Solo). Just remember that the G4 was 1 desktop chip behind, and now it is in line with the desktops (I am assuming that we can place the Intels as the next advance over the G5. Accurate, I think).

Is there going to be a quicktime stream of todays event??

Yeah is there? Thats what I have been searching through this thread for and havn't found one... well if there is could someone PM me if its not on MacRumors front page?

store price increase

last week a refurbished g4 ibook was 899.00 now its 999.00. is it me or do i think they are making a mistake by doing this. they are trying to make there new hardware release look cheap but buy keeping old inventory no one will buy if its more expensive that the new stuff??

😕
