6hrs is right on the money:

The battery is 11,666 mah according to ZDNET (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/n...-battery/18985) which means it should take just about 6 hrs to charge from a FULL discharge (charger is rated 2amps at 5V which is approx 2000mah or 10watts). 11666/2000=5.833 hrs with nothing else going on (this is theoretical of course and it could take less because that is from a FULL discharge and the battery will never fully discharge and with stuff running it could easily take 6-7 hours or more.

actually in an ideal scenario, a 10W charger and a 42.5W(hr) battery.
lets say a 100% efficient world, should take up abt ~4.25hrs (from the charger to the battery). (real life, would say be about 80%?)
but also due to the chemistry of the battery, which needs to be adhered to. u add this and that. etc. (longer charging time for the last few percentage)

but then u also can't deplete the battery to 0%. so you dont really charge from 0%.

but whatever, 6hrs sounds good enough. haha

Are you charging from a wall socket or computer? Even on my ipad1 if I plug it into my MBP it takes forever. Wall, not so much.

a computer cant output as much power as that of the wallplug, which is designed only to regulate power.

i wouldnt recommend u to do so, you risk burning off the usb controller of your mbp (burning off, as in the ability to charge anymore).

With all the problems being reported I've already cancelled my iPad 3 order.

They way things are going Apple's iOS devices are going to have all the same reliability problems that the iPod and Macs have had over the years.

You would think that if you paid top dollar you would get top quality. Sadly not. I've still got cheap Sony kit that has lasted many more years than some of my very expensive Apple kit.

Apple should do well to remember that a reputation for poor quality is easy to achieve but very hard to shake off.

Well of course you're going to have reliability issues. What technological advances have you seen that does not have reliability issues? Computers, televisions, audio equipment, PS3, Xbox 360, an apple, have all had their issues.

Sometime ago, I had to replace one of my faulty computer monitors, and I had to replace an external hard drive. Replaced them with the same model and haven't had a problem since. I also had a friend over to see if I could fix his sony handy cam, that he payed $1200 for 8 months ago.

There is always bad apples in a bunch. Technology always, one time or another, will and can break on you, just like your car. Get it fixed, and move on.

I've had this problem with Apple products before. The first batch always seems to have problems. Eventually Apple comes out with software/firmware updates that solve the problems. I should have learned my lesson by now. It's better to wait and see what happens. I cancelled my order so I can wait until the initial problems are resolved then I will look at it again. In my experience it's not a good idea to buy Apple products as soon as they are released.

I have no issues with a longer charge time...my issue is the battery itself..I feel like mine doesn't last as nearly as long as it should. I turned off 3G, notifications etc and even casual web browsing makes my battery deplete quickly.

hmm.
top quality comes with trade off, but trade off does not equate to poor quality.

sadly we have come to a world when innovation is overturned by business prospect,
the most classic example is the concorde, where are we all living in?
we would rather have a cheap flight that takes us hours to get from one place to another, than the reverse. one accident and the press, killed the concorde, and we have stepped one step backward.

i see this in u.

It makes no sense in a highly populated, energy- and transportation- starved world to be using a plane that's horribly inefficient and uses a lot of airport capacity for relatively few people.

The crash isn't what put it out of business. The crash put it out of business sooner, but even without that, when they reached EOL, no one would have built new ones, because it wouldn't be profitable with the capital needed.

define quickly. 2 hours? 5 hours? 8 hours?

yup i have no issues with the charge time. my ipad rarely goes to zero and i always charge over night any ways.

I never use more than 80% per day (typical is probably around 40% per day give or take). I sleep more than 7 hours a day. No complaintes here.

6 hours - that's ridiculous. Apple should buy shares in the electricity companies the amount of money it's costing me every year to charge all my effing Apple gadgets.

Does it take the same length of time for the WiFi only version?

I'm starting to wonder why they bothered putting a 4G chip inside. Couldn't they have developed some form of mini wireless 4G router that connects remotely to all your Apple devices adding 4G. Bit like the MiFi product.

Definitely burning a hole in my wallet!!!! A whopping $6.55 per year lol. (well, at least for the ipad only. Can't comment on the cumulative cost of all the apple products owned).

Wirelessly posted

Mine cut off around 530. Charged it then and put on airplanemode mode around 6.

Every night I have to plug in and charge my MBA, iPhone and iPad. It's not just the cost but the inconvenience of having to take the chargers every time I go away. I don't blame Apple, the fault lies with the battery companies who just can't keep up with new products. If I was Tim Cook I would start using some of that cash pile to invest in component companies or advanced cell research to speed up development of the next generation of batteries that don't need to be charged so often.

So far the battery recharge time isn't getting the same amount of attention from the mainstream press, like the heating issue is. That story seems to have long legs.

I believe it's because brand new Apple customers are not familiar with Apple's styling above everything priority. This is a good way for them to learn. Then if they decide to buy a MacBook Pro, it's heat won't be a shock to them. It's a win win scenario.

Studies Show Youth Becoming Increasingly Impatient

Might this be Apple's way of helping young people learn how to be more patient? It's working.

Guys, a lot of you have incorrect understanding of power and energy.

The battery takes longer because it has a much higher capacity. Apple likely used the same charge rate because they fear blowing up the extremely flammable battery that is inside.

You'll pay the same amount of money to charge the battery no matter how fast you charge it. Higher current means higher kW.

Example:
Scenario 1: 5v @ 2amps for 5hours = 50watt hours
10watts times 5 hours

Scenario 2: 5v @ 5amps for 2hours = 50watt hours
25watts times 2 hours

Now, who wants to see what happens when you charge a lithium battery, designed for 2amps, at 5 amps? Go check YouTube.

Matt

A modern lithium polymer battery found in our iPads can EASILY handle a 1C charge rate with very little heat production. 1C equals the rate required to charge a lipo battery to full capacity within 1 hour. Our latest MBPs can almost go zero to fully charged in less than an hour with the laptop off (Again Apple choose to go with a smaller/lighter adapter at the expense of max charger output so to get the fastest charge rate, the laptop needs to be off or in sleep mode) 11,560mah 3.7V battery could easily handle 11.56 amps at 3.7 volts to fully charge in 1 hour. The problem is that would require almost 9 amps at 5 volts that USB runs at. I don't who much you know about wire/connector current carrying capacity, but those tiny little pins in the dock connector can not safely handle that amount of current without overheating. I suspect Apple kept the small dock connector for speed to market and also for compatibility. Ways you can get around are use a much thicker connector, or increase the voltage. If Apple made a mini-magsafe adapter for the iPad 4 that ran at 20 volts for example, it would cut the current down to little over 2 amps. You can get by with a smaller connector again.

Great idea! Maybe he can fix us so we only have to eat once a week. Three times a day, what an inconvenience. Every time I go away I have to bring money to buy food, find acceptable restaurants three times a day. I don't blame God. The fault lies with our modern rushed schedules.

You've got it backwards. A USB port doesn't push power to the iPad. The iPad draws power. Big difference.
