What the hell does that mean? Of course it does, many are using it just fine; although the may have less signal strength than before, but that can be due to many interference issues that are easily corrected in firmware releases. My wife is a embedded software engineer, she's been designing stuff like this for over 20 years now...

I've already sold my original iPad 1 and will be shipping in on Monday. I bought this iPad 3 with higher hopes but if Apple's technical support can't give me an answer over the phone in the next 24 hours; that's it, it'll go back and I'll likely NEVER own another iPad again. For $699 this thing should work straight out of the box, just like every device I've ever owned under Steve Jobs watch.

This latest release from Apple leaves me wondering where the company is headed; perhaps mid-1980's once again... So sad too, they had such promise!

I am so pissed off and frustrated right now I could SCREAM...
No, really, you must have bought the 4G-only version. Hopefully you can still exchange it.

First off, I work as a network engineer myself so I am VERY, VERY familiar with the difficulties that occur with WiFi networks, and how to properly configure them and so-forth. The router, IS running the latest firmware releases, in-fact, I stay up-to-date on these updates on a monthly basis, so the problem ISN'T MY NETWORK... Everything else on the network works just fine... I support well over 200 devices on my local network without an issue...

As for defective product, well, I've exchanged two of them now, so now we have three devices; all from different product lots and all different serial number lots. So, is it me or Apple's lack of quality control???

I've called Apple, their only answer is to return the device for a new one. It's a 30 miles drive each time I need to perform an exchange. I've been back and forth three times today already.

I've tried several routers, including commercial ones and our Apple Time Machine with the latest firmware installed. And still, none of the three can connect... I've tried OPEN WiFi, WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES, and so-forth and still, none of the three iPads can connect...

You're right, it must be me and not Apple's sudden lack of quality control...

Between the potential screen issue, heat issue, and wifi issues; I suspect Apple is headed in a backwards direction and that is truly a shame.

And by the way, two of these units were tested our at Best Buy and failed there as well, even their store display units cannot connect to WiFi; only LTE/4G...

Hmm... Couldn't be an Apple issue right?

If you've tried 3 and none of them connect then the problem is so obviously your network that I can only assume you're trolling. Either that or you've forgotten your password!! :D

You used a semi-colon incorrectly. Also, of your wife is an imbedded software engineer, how could she have married someone so clueless.

All I am saying is that there are issues with these new iPads... I don't know why, it seems that most of the hardware is the same as that of the iPad 2, with the exception of the screen, processor, and maybe a few other small components on the board. The heat issue I get, it's a faster processor for video and everyone knows video gets hot (remember the Adobe Flash days)... As for the wifi signal strength, again understandable to a point given the introduction of a new processor and whatever components are needed to drive the processor; but they've should have done a little more Q & A here. Not being able to connect at all; more of a quality control issue from Foxconn I imagine and inexcusable for Apple's third release of these devices.

As for the person who questions my having attempted all these tests, swaps, etc; all I can say is you're there and I'm here and I know what time and effort I've invested. The Best Buy GM at this location has removed the other 5 units left in stock from their shelves as they were set to release a sale ad tomorrow which directly highlights the iPad 3. He is sending them back as defective and upon this third return, I'll be issued a full refund and not a unit swap.

I've called the closest Apple store and two of their personnel have advised me that they've had at least 10 to 20 of these units be returned for the VERY same issue; which they obviously verified in-store. Currently, this Apple store does not have ANY iPad 3 units in-stock, they are pending replaces but not for a few weeks.

I realize that with any new electronics there is going to be a period of issues that need to be resolved; however, my past experiences with Apple have been great, but that was only under Steve Job's management of the company. Prior to his return, we had numerous issue with equipment and switched to Microsoft (not the best, but at the time, it worked). Following his return, we switched back and have had VERY good luck until now. I was afraid this was going to happen and regret not upgrading into the iPad 2 when they were released; however, not at the time given Jobs was still in-charge.

Anyway, this who thread has gotten off track. The original posting was seeking comments from those who might have experienced similar issues but instead, some wanted to take it as an attack on y competence, which I will NEVER stand for. So in short, thank you for those who offered valuable suggestions and comments, and now I'll just do what I think is best here moving forward. As of tonight, it's returning the iPad 3 for a refund and seriously considering our relationship with Apple moving forward...

Regards,

This is one of the most amusing threads I've ever read on here. Obviously a troll just stirring things up. Made me laugh, that's for sure.

Must be a faulty iPad. I'm currently using a Netgear WDNR3700 router with the latest beta firmware and my iPad 2 & 3, iPhone 3GS, 4 & 4S, Apple TV 2, 3 as well as other brand WiFi devices connects with a full signal throughout the house.

I had to replace my iPad 3 due to a dead pixel and dust and the replacement connected instantly also.

My Apple devices other other brand devices even pick up my neighbours old Belkin silver router through 4 solid concrete walls, only 1 bar on that one but it still works great.

Apples quality control has nose dived in the last few years, Apple is the only company that my devices have the most problems, mainly rubbish displays.

99% of the time all other brand electronics work fist time for me and are flawless as well as cheap, regardless which company makes it. You pay a premium for Apple and get crap, it's not on

So far due to Apples pathetic quality control I have gone through, 2 iPhones 4S, 2 iPad 1's 8 iPad 2's  , so far I'm on my second iPad 3. My original first gen iPad touch controller failed, it randomly pressed buttons as if someones was touching it with five fingers. My iPad 2's had big specs of dust and dead pixels and my iPhone 4S, first one had a faulty ear piece and backlight bleeding (looked like five flashlights on top). Current one is flawless.

My first iPad 3 had a perfect white uniform screen, no backlight bleeding at all but had a dead pixel that as distracting, my replacement iPad 3 has no dead pixels, no backlight bleeding but is slightly yellow on top and pure white half way down, dam you Apple

Regards,

You're not really married, are you? It's not possible.

First off, I am not trolling here... Secondly, why does everyone need to make things personal? I simply mentioned my wife and my profession as a point of context into who was troubleshooting the issue.

It's possible that this Best Buy region received a batch of defective product; it could have happened anywhere!

Anyway, I can see this post isn't going anywhere so that's it, it's over and ended.

Please do not reply any further; it's pointless to get through to people who only want to go personal with smart-ass comments about people wife, profession, technical abilities, etc.

Thanks anyway; I though this board was better than this; but I thought wrong.

Good day...

New iPad 3 Cannot Connect to WiFi Out-of-Box

I have actually seen this quite often with the third generation iPad. You have to connect to Wi-Fi In-the-Box.

Why do people insist on capitalizing even word in their sentence? It makes them seem so educated.

Yet you're happy to have a go at Apple as a company, and even Tim Cook personally because your local store had a batch of faulty units? You're extremely hypocritical, and just ignorant to the whole process that goes on in Apple. I don't think you're suited for Apple products. Go buy a Dell or something.

You throw you alleged credentials around like they give you a free pass, then insist that it's all Apple's fault when the vast majority of "new" iPad users have had none of the problems you indicated. As I stated before, the Best Buys here have iPads working perfectly on WiFi, as does the Apple Store. I also pointed out that your post was the first time I've seen anyone try to claim that there was a "widespread" or "systematic" issue with the new iPads and WiFi. Yet you never responded to those and chose only to respond to the inflammatory posts and raise even more questions surrounding your own credibility. The fallout is on you, not the rest of this community...

I had this problem too. Did you sync to ITunes? After I did that it worked but when I unplugged from Imac it stopped. I ended unplugging / turning off the router, waiting a minute or two, plugged it back in and I was good to go, no problems since. Weird I know but it worked. I too was so frustrated when I first took it out of the box!

Hello OP. So, you changed to all of those different configurations for 200 connected devices? Well, I guess I can see part of why you are frustrated. I have had to change wireless protocols, security, etc before and had to propogate it to all of the devices connected and that was a major pain and frustrating experience. If you had to do that for each of 200 devices, I can only imagine how frustrated you must be right now.

Maybe the issue is that your network is at its limit of devices and the 201st device is disallowed. However, since you mention that Best Buy had the issue, there is the distinct possibility that some bad units were shipped to your area and you and your Best Buy had the bad luck of trying to connect many of the bad devices. I hope it works out for you.

What I don't understand.... Why do people vote it down when the person is having a genuine problem?

They're not all trolls :p

You mention you and your wife's profession over and over to add credibility to your case, but it just takes credibility away. If you or your wife were in the IT field, you would have figured out the problem by now and not taken to the forums trying to find a solution.

I'd bet my next paycheck that you have Timed Access or something like that turned on so that the new units you try do not connect. There's absolutely no way you've gotten 3 iPads from 3 different "lot numbers" that don't connect to your network.

Sorry, and I HAVE to add this: Even if Steve Jobs or his absence had absolutely ANYTHING to do with this issue, he was alive during the new iPad's design. He was alive for the antenna issues with iPhone 4. He was alive for the initial issues with iPad 1. He was alive for all the different "gates" that Apple has been put through by the media.

I'm so sick of people saying "Steve Jobs would have never........." My god, this new iPad is .6 mm thicker than the old one. Do people realize how miniscule of a difference that is? LOOK AT A RULER.

You might want to check your troubleshooting guide. All iPads come out of the box Wifi ready so it should be fine. If for whatever reason you have a faulty one, the Apple store could definitely get you another one.

If you're a network engineer and you have tried a default configured router besides your current ones, and the iPad still can't connect to those, it means that the iPad has a faulty wifi/bluetooth module.

If you have the iPad work with the default configured router, that means the WiFi module on the iPad is fine and there is something preventing your current wifi systems from connecting.

Reasons for not connecting to your current wireless network:
1. Not plugged in
2. Not enough signal
3. DHCP server on the router or on the DHCP controlling server is not working.
4. MAC address filtering is on and you need to add the MAC address of the iPad into the permissions list
5. DHCP is out of valid IPs that can be given on IPV4

Reasons for no internet service:
1. Not plugged into a modem
2. No signal from the carrier
3. DNS propagation is broken
4. DHCP is broken.

Definitely look at the troubleshooting list by @whtrbt7. Spot on.

When I received my new iPad this past Tuesday, I was able to connect with work WiFi just fine.

Got home and no luck until I remembered MAC address filtering was turned on. After updating my ABSE with my new iPad's MAC address, all has been just swell.
