Are you positive it's genuine Apple?

Hmm..I Thought so but now I'm not so sure. Just went back through my Amazon orders. The product description implies its genuine but more recent reviews (I bought mine last summer) suggest it may not be :-(. Oh well, will just have to cut my losses and buy a new one.

Bought a Targus Slim Case from Best Buy for my new iPad today. Came home and snapped it in. It fit great but the magnets did not wake or sleep my iPad. My settings were correct. I returned it in exchange for an Apple Smart Cover.

Lucky you, mine doesn't work, and this just posted on Amazon:

Pro Ebiz LLC says:

Apple changed the position where the Sensor is on the new iPad. This case does not support for that function right now.

I bought a Bear Motion leather folio type case for the iPad 2 and the magnets work for me.

Would have been nice if Apple notified the major case manufacturers.

On the inside of my smart cover, close to the metal piece and in VERY small print are the words "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China" . You might look at your cover and see if it says that. If so is should be genuine Apple.

I bought an apple smart cover off Amazon and it doesn't work with my new iPad. It says designed by apple in California made in China and it doesnt work at all. Dont know if its fake or not. I only had the iPad 1before so I might be using it wrong not a big deal for me though.

Most of the covers on amazon are knock-offs. They price them close to the genuine ones (usually $6-10 less) to throw buyers off. The Chinese sellers have realized that their products can easily be spotted by foreigners based on price alone. I've notice this change in strategy over the past 3-4 years.

I have a good amount of amazon gift cards which tempted me to get some covers but after reading a few reviews, a significant number of buyers complain an out the quality or that they don't appear to be legit.

Good. And on the metal spine near the bottom hinge is even tinier print with what I think is the cover's serial. I can't read it and don't have a magnifier handy. :) This is with my black leather smart cover purchased when the ipad2's came out. (glad I kept it when I sold my 2!)

I just bought this smart cover from Amazon. It's the same one I sold with my iPad 2. I hope it works. I paid extra for one day shipping.

Yep, mine has that too.

I purchased the same case and it does not put my iPad 3 to sleep! I will keep it till more case come out. It does fit well but the magnets do not work.

Just bought one from BestBuy, it is defiantly different than the one from Amazon it is heavier and the inside is way nicer. Beware the Amazon ones mine eas like 25$ and even had the official apple item number in the title.

That's exactly what I'm having. I had an old iPad 1, so never used smartcover before. When I purchased my new iPad, I gathered, why not just buy smartcover through Amazon, since it's supposed to be identical. I believe Apple has made some changed in their case, after all.

Sorry I mislead you. I have never set anything in settings and my smartcover just worked. I did just look and yep, there is a setting for the lock.
Again, apologies.

Probably because prior to putting the smart cover on, there was not a setting. Once you put the smart cover on, it detected it, and the setting appeared. I remember that from when i got the 2. I did not get the smart cover at first. But looked for the setting everyone was talking about. No setting.

The smart cover only works one way. The hinges of the smart cover should be on the side closest to the headphone jack and not on the side closest to the speaker. You probably have it right, but I thought it was worth saying.

Apple has changed nothing. I have both an iPad 2 and a new iPad. I just carefully checked the location of the sensor by taking my smart cover and carefully sliding it down from the top. It triggered the sleep/awake sensor (which I believe is nothing more than a reed relay) at exactly the same location on both units.

This is how I did my test. I locked both units in the landscape position with the "bottom" of the screen being the right edge when the unit is held in the portrait position. I then took the smart cover and slowly slid it down from the "top" with the unit in the Portrait position. I carefully noted where the sensor was tripped. I did this 5 times on each unit.

On both units the sensor tripped just as the smart cover touched the "top" edge of the second icon from the bottom.

From this I deduce that the sensor is in the same location on both units.

Another thing which may cause the problem that some people are having is the slightly thicker iPad 3. I'll admit it's not much, but if the magnets on the 3rd party covers are placed so they just worked with the iPad 2 they may now be actually far enough away from the sensor on the new ipad to cause the problem.

However, what ever is causing the phenomenon, it is not caused by Apple repositioning the sensor.

Good observation.
Setting appears the first time a smart cover is detected.

Original Apple Smart cover leather and plastic work with new iPad

Some third party covers do not.

There are knock-offs being sold as Genuine Apple.
Some work some don't.

All Smart cover hinge magnets will only catch on left side with iPad home button toward bottom and power button facing top right

It appears Apple is using a new design of sleep/wake sensor in the new iPad. A sleep/wake sensor that is sensitive to polarity.

Apple decided to use a polarity sensitive switch in the new iPad 3. Some iPad 2 customers were having issues with their iPads entering sleep mode when they flipped Apple's Smart Cover around flat behind their iPad 2. Since the iPad 2's sleep/wake sensor wasn't polarity specific, it could sometimes be triggered from the magnet being positioned at the rear of the iPad. By changing to a sensor that requires the correct polarity, the problem is eliminated.

Some of the original genuine Apple Smart Covers do not work properly with the iPad 3. Sometime in 2011, Apple apparently modified the design specifications of the Smart Covers in preparation for the release of the iPad 3.

Yep. This is it. There was a guy on here who did a polarity test and found that the sensor would only react to negative polarity magnets (I think). So that's why we're seeing that some iPad 2 cases work and others don't. The location of the magnet didn't change at all.

And I'm that guy! Although, I'm not sure which pole (positive or negative) the iPad 3 is expecting.

Apple switched to using a sleep/wake sensor that is sensitive to the polarity of the magnet. The iPad 2's sleep/wake sensor didn't require a specific polarity, it worked with both ends of a magnet. Not true for the iPad 3.

Everything is detailed in a post on my blog (complete with HD video demonstration):
