I’m sorry, did u not notice that I’m comparing with a 4 year old device? In technology matters that’s ancient.

My car is not as fast or nice as a 4-year old Ferrari. I still don’t see the relevance of the point you are trying to make. Different market segments are different market segments.

Ever heard of the concept of trickling down? Cutting edge stuff like mini led first appear in high end models and then gradually trickles down to the lower end segments. So it would be reasonably expected to see for example a 4 year old feature like ProMotion appear on a lower segment device, right? Or is it still not clear?

So you have created a trickle-down time limit. Good to know.

Hey, Tim Cook, forum poster says that when you introduce a feature in a pro device, you have to trickle it down to the cheap devices within 4 years. Better get on that.

I do miss the days when Apple had basically 1 version of their new product, instead of 4 or more versions.

This segmentation allows Apple to short-change literally any iPhone, Mac or iPad that isn’t designated as the “Pro” version.

So they’re saying if you want the ideal version of that product, it has to be Pro. Otherwise you’re met with compromises. So they jack the prices up on those Pro versions and now we’ve even seen prices climb on non-Pro versions.

I don’t necessarily think the new Mini should start at $399. $449 would’ve been a decent compromise, but I agree that they need to increase the base storage like they did with the new iPhone 13 non-Pros.

It’s weird to have a downclocked version of the 13 Pro chip, instead of just giving it the 13 non-Pro chip. I don’t get it.
You are missing the point. Calculate the cost of the original iPad mini and iPad mini 2 with Retina display from 2012-2013 along with the US price index for inflation from then until 2021 here. Now factor in cost of components decreasing in price from then until now and also factor in increase in prices across the board for production and shipping along with built-in reductions for future sales/discounts and refurb store prices and you will conclude that $499 is rather fair market price with some profit margin to appease shareholders. Apple is not a non-profit organization or charity. I am a shareholder and I don’t necessarily agree with everything Apple does but I do know that trying to price something the same as from close to a decade ago is illogical.

iPad Mini, A15 Mini?

Firmly hanging onto my Mini 5.

As an iPad Mini 5 owner, I don't see any reason to be ashamed to hold onto your current device.

As an iPad Mini 6 preorder, I can tell you regardless of this downclocking news it will still run rings around the 5th gen in terms of performance.... so there's no shame in upgrading either.

Do what's best for you and your wallet.

My cost to upgrade to the 256GB WiFi model from a 64GB WiFi iPad Mini 5 is $434 after trade-in. That satisfied my wallet and my perceived value in upgrading. It may not fit for others. I use the Mini as a dedicated mobile gaming device, also streaming via the AV adapter, and I've hit the 64GB storage limit already and had to offload titles. The list was too good to pass up.

Lol, some people want an iPad Pro in a mini form factor then will complain that it costs more than an iPad Air 4 with a larger screen and then its all about a 8.3” screen can never be considered a productive product and the excuse train goes on. These complainers need a reason to complain otherwise there would be no reason for their existence 😂

His point is that it’s a four year old pro that still has better display specs than a brand new iPad mini.

At some point it’s reasonable to be frustrated that even the entry-level devices aren’t up to the standards of four-year-old pro devices.

I think you know what he meant
And if most of the potential buyers of the iPad mini feel that way AND don't buy the Mini then maybe Apple will be compelled to build a different machine at a different price point. But as long as they sell a boatload of machines, and I suspect they will with this iPad mini, then they arguably have made the right product at the right price...

Apple believes that at present ProMotion is a “pro” feature along with FaceID, 4 speakers, miniLED and camera array. You and I may not like it but hey if you want to purchase an Android tablet be my guest. I am in the process of ordering a 3rd of this mini 6. 😎

Factor in inflation and its not top dollar plus include the increase of prices for everything in 2020-21.

I don’t know. It doesn’t have lasers, and at this price point it really oughta have lasers. I mean, lasers have been around forever. Where are the friggin lasers?

Without an OLED display, I’m far less interested in buying it. And when is Apple going to let us have the Calculator app on iPad?

Plenty of good calculator apps in the App Store. In fact, much nicer than Apple’s. Why do you want apple’s?

Apple believes that at present ... a “pro” feature ... 4 speakers

I thought the new Mini 6 had the four speakers? Or is it just one on each side?

EDIT: Seems like it's billed as "Stereo landscape speakers" even if there's mesh holes for what appears to be four. Guess it could be 3 also? Very puzzling. Either way it's an upgrade and I'm happy for it since I only use it in landscape mode.

Apple started to include OLED on the non-Pro iPhones since 2020 and it’s been on the high end model since iPhone X and you expect it to magically skip the iPad Air and be introduced on the mini 6 😂 Yes, Apple does stagger some features from product line but an OLED is a big jump unlike something like CenterStage or an LED flash.

It’s stereo in landscape only the other speaker holes maybe aesthetics or when holding the device and those speakers are covered it has an alternate route to exit the device.

…or unlike ProMotion which is like ancient but it’s all ok in your mind because apple decided that it is a pro feature until they don’t.

I agree with the previous poster that iPadOS needs a default calculator and weather app it’s about time. Other options on the App Store usually contain ads. 😛

I'm not going to say it isnt significant. But I'm definitely keeping my order. There is no competition in the smaller tablet market, the new ipad mini completely blows it away. Cant argue it isn't a shame though.
I like the idea of a one-handed iPad, but I worry about lack of integrated keyboard and reading pdfs.

It is for the same reason M1 8 core / 7 core GPU chips are used in the cheapest MacBook Air and iMac - to use subpar chips that would otherwise end up in the scrap bin.

I've been scared off of OLED due to the burn-in potential with static images which I am very guilty of doing with my device. I don't know if the panels that Apple uses are less prone to that. IPS is what I use on my PC gaming rig and that works pretty darn well (even if high-end gaming ultrawide monitors are like selling your firstborn these days).
