…or unlike ProMotion which is like ancient but it’s all ok in your mind because apple decided that it is a pro feature until they don’t.
I have used and had ProMotion on my iPadPro 12.9” and other than a few situations it did not make a difference to me and when I returned to the 60 Hz iPhone display or any other non-Pro iPad my eyes adapted. It’s not like we are comparing display resolutions such as SD, HD, FHD, 4K where one would notice. If Apple decides to include ProMotion in a future iPad mini it would make little to no difference to me, now if Apple included an OLED or microLED then we are talking.

It’s more likely to use chips that can’t run at full speed, instead of throwing them out. The tail end of the curve is smaller than the middle, so you need to use those in a low volume product, which iPhone is not.
Agreed. 👍

Otherwise, there’s no cost, heat, or battery life reason to put in the effort to actually downclock a small number of chips unless they weren’t purposely manufactured that way.

And like you said, the Mini is DEFINITELY not too expensive. I suppose it could have been priced at $479 or something, but why bother????

Yeah, but she goes into every thread and says “it costs too much,” so I;’m not sure how your personal experience is relevant.

If it costs too much, what *should* it cost? Comparing it to the iPad 9, which she did, is silly, because the mini has many capabilities and features that the 9 does not.
How much should it cost… I guess its like all things, as much as people are prepared to pay for it and what "game" Apple wants to play. That is, whether they're more interested in making from the device or the ensuing services, or both. A 128GB model is cleverly absent as they know 64GB is too small in 2021.

Given its pricing at I'm not a buyer. I would otherwise be and it would fit perfectly in what else I have. Something that doesn't fit as nicely will probably be bought but that that same time, it will get significantly less use… and that has its own implications. That said, I'm not a typical buyer so you can take that as whatever you want.

lets see...
- down clocked cpu
- 60hz only display
- 500 nits max brightness
- Inflated prices
- 64gb ram only on base
- 4gb system ram
- 2 speakers

My 2017, 10.5" iPad Pro has
- 120ghz ProMotion display
- 600 nits max brightness
- 4 speakers
- 4gb of system ram

I was really tempted to get the new mini because I love the form factor but they seemed to have crippled it so much that I will just pass.
You are right about 120 Mhz screen, brightness and speakers, but that ’down clocked CPU’ in the Mini 6 provides considerably more performance than the A10X in your 2017 Pro.

You realise that the key word in your ramblings is “to me”. In my case the difference in having ProMotion and not is so dramatic that it is a deal breaker for me. Maybe I would have been less miffed if they hadn’t also jacked up the prices.

But in this case, how much it SHOULD cost isn’t a mystery. It’s dictated by existing iPad products priced above and below it.

Personally, I think the iPad Mini is appropriately priced. It had to cost less than the Air, but more than the iPad. Its screen quality, chip, design, and Pencil 2 compatibility needs it to be priced closer to the Air.

Certainly the A10x is a relative slouch but for my use case, which involves a lot of reading, I attach far greater importance to the screen.

Jacked up price, please see inflation prices here.

Do you expect me to conduct a survey or do you think that Apple has not considered all the variables in order to design, produce and deliver a product. Maybe you can do better and show Apple and the rest of us that you can do a better job with a GoFundMe project. I have news for you Samsung has been trying to compete with the iPad for years and it is still lacking in the experience. There is a reason why iPad holds a high satisfaction rating. It would be higher if Apple was concerned to produce a budget version but that is what the second hand market and hand me downs is there for.

I realize everyone has their own trigger points for pricing, but the technology industry pricing in the last 24 months has been absolutely outrageously inflated, and none are more affected than the PC gaming enthusiasts.

$2000 for a GPU? $1500-3000 for a monitor? $500 motherboard? $600+ CPU? Yep, all that. Aside from the moves nVidia is making with its RTX gaming cards, none of the remaining tech is "blow me over" revolutionary, yet the retail costs are up hundreds of percent over the last three or so years.... and people pay it, even if they cry while doing it, because the FOMO is real. (And that's if you can even find it anywhere!)

I don't see how Apple is any different. I don't like it, but I realize it's certainly not just them.

At least we don't have to fight the bots and scalpers to get one, and then stare sadly as they get posted on eBay for $1000. It took me 6 months of running trackers and alerts to get a PS5 and I'm shocked I did. It was arguably one of the worst consumer experiences I've ever had.

And the people who prefer the iPad mini are those who like a portable tablet able to be held in one hand for a period of time which is not the case with the other iPad options. These people which include me do not care if the iPad has 2 or 4 speakers or 120 Hz refresh rate we care about battery life, portability, etc etc that this iPad mini 6 fulfills perfectly. FaceID would add to the price and people use it to unlock a device once in a while unlike a phone or to make purchases also once in awhile. The exclusion or inclusion (future) of FaceID on an iPad mini would make little difference now if an OLED or microLED display is added then we are talking. 😁

There hasn’t been much inflation going on in more than a decade. In my book, intentionally limiting features (ram, display etc) whilst jacking up prices is called milking the customer. Maybe u don’t mind that, but I do. To each his own.

Don’t get your hopes high with oled or microled, knowing apple, they will be stuck as pro features for a long while before they appear in the lower segments.

Have you considered reporting your findings on inflation for the last decade to the US Federal Reserve, I am sure it will be taken into deep consideration and the appropriate amendments made accordingly.

Unlike others I don’t loose sleep over these little things, I invest my money smartly, save and make purchases accordingly to my requirements. Everyone is different but it’s complaining about something that will not change anything and you have two choices either purchase it or not.

OLED is not a pro feature as it’s on the non-Pro iPhone models since 2020, try again. When Apple does decide to include it into a future iPad mini, guess what I will order it and trade my previous model while not loosing sleep over it. As I mentioned with my trade-in for my mini 5 plus some discounts and other additions I am getting the base mini 6 practically free.

That has changed over the last year. Plus there is a global chip shortage which is driving technology prices higher.
More like this year, which is the very recent past and not at all what I was referring to.

There is nothing to report, it’s publicly available information.
And buying 3 iPad minis at their inflated prices is indeed a very smart move!

Now that there is microLed, OLED will probably never appear on the iPads.
Your trade in deal is meaningless if you don’t disclose how much you paid for your 5.

You mean miniLED on the 2021 iPadPro 12.9”

Well one is almost free and the other two I got it cheaper than retail through 3rd party and other discounts plus as a side benefit AAPL shareholder I also receive dividends. Smart move is subjective, it’s what works in my situation 😁
