I don't have an issue with under clocking.

But I have an issue with Apple not disclosing it in the product specifications. People should know exactly what they are buying.

Well one is almost free and the other two I got it cheaper than retail through 3rd party and other discounts plus as a side benefit AAPL shareholder I also receive dividends. Smart move is subjective, it’s what works in my situation 😁

So let me get this straight, you try to justify Apple jacking up the price for the mini with inflation and other excuses and yet you seem to be motivated to buying them because you can get them discounted?
Sure, I would probably also pull the trigger if I could get the mini for like a $100 cheaper.

1) it’s not “underclocked”
2) when has apple *ever* disclosed speeds of the processors in its portable devices?

Just because you are under the impression that there has been no inflation over the last decade or so does not mean it does not exist plus the rise in prices due to component shortages and other price increases due to fuel costs, labour, transportation, etc. Living in an imaginary bubble is fine insofar it hurts no one.

Not my problem if you choose to pay retail and are unable to seek discounted deals it’s what someone who likes complaining will resort to as it’s a familiar and comforting feeling but negative nonetheless. I will be enjoying my iPad mini 6 next Friday while you keep complaining but hey you do you.

A15 fits in between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. Apple promised an A15 with 5 graphic cores and that is what you are getting. Don’t like it purchase the product and file a class action.

And if most of the potential buyers of the iPad mini feel that way AND don't buy the Mini then maybe Apple will be compelled to build a different machine at a different price point.

Yep!

Just like the overpriced HomePod they killed and the overpriced AirPods Max that are now constantly $80-100 off all over.

The good news is that they jacked the prices while NOT bumping the base storage and not including ProMotion.

This will give the cult several more reasons to defend the *next* price increase.

Apple is smart.. Jack but withhold some things --- then jack again

Newsflash Apple increased the price on the iPhone models including iPadPro and Air and people are still buying it. 😜

iPhones and iPads are mature products, HomePod and AirPod Max not so. Plus a very different customer and for all these markets.

Someone said not to complain, but if no one complained, will we get the iPhone 4S with improved antenna system compared to iPhone 4? Will we get the iPhone 6S/6S Plus with a stronger 7000 series aluminum body compared to iPhone 6/6 Plus 6000 series aluminum?

The cult just doesn't like anyone saying things critical of their lord (Apple)..

1) How do you call a processor that is the same processor as the one in the iPhone 13 but runs at a lower speed?
2) The fact that Apple never discloses the speed of the processors does not mean that they right in doing so.

I'm not saying Apple should "advertise" the clock speeds of the processors. I'm saying that people should know exactly what they are buying if they spend the time to compare the specs of different products on Apple website. If two different products have the same specs, the customer expects them to have equal performance.

Otherwise why even bother saying that this product has the A14 and the other has the A15 in it? Or that the iPhone 13 Pro has one more GPU core compared to iPhone 13?

As a customer that is trying to choose between buying an iPad Air or an iPad mini, for example, I might end up buying the mini thinking its A15 processor is going to be faster than the A14 in the iPad Air. But that won't be the case if the A15 is clocked lower than the A14 in the iPad Air.

The clock speed of the processor is meaningless. Of what use is it to consumers?

It runs at a lower speed than iPhone 13, but at the highest speed it can run. So what’s your point? (It’s not the “same processor.” It’s a different speed bin.)

Your argument is simply madness.

Sometimes I wish articles like this weren't posted just to see if ANYONE would complain about speed declination. Doubtful.

@ChromeCloud Well said

With the approach Apple is rolling with, we may as well say "it has one of Apples processors in it"

People seem to love Apple touting when there are performance differences that are positive...
Other types of differences --- "who needs to talk specs!?"

:D

Around here Apple is right and Apple always wins.

Ok. What does the clock speed of an A15 processor tell you. Is there some job you can do with your device if the clock speed is 3200 MHz, but not if it’s 3100 MHz? Exactly how does MHz factor into your buying decision?

And since the clock rate is continuously varied based on workload and power status, which clock rate would you like apple to reveal to you?

As an iPad Mini 5 owner, I don't see any reason to be ashamed to hold onto your current device.

As an iPad Mini 6 preorder, I can tell you regardless of this downclocking news it will still run rings around the 5th gen in terms of performance.... so there's no shame in upgrading either.

Do what's best for you and your wallet.

My cost to upgrade to the 256GB WiFi model from a 64GB WiFi iPad Mini 5 is $434 after trade-in. That satisfied my wallet and my perceived value in upgrading. It may not fit for others. I use the Mini as a dedicated mobile gaming device, also streaming via the AV adapter, and I've hit the 64GB storage limit already and had to offload titles. The list was too good to pass up.
Awesome, enjoy, and let me know how it compares to the 5! I may cave yet around the holidays and trade it in.

Your argument does not make sense. If it did, then Apple shouldn't give ANY technical spec about its products because "none of it is of any use to consumers". Why even have a spec sheet? Why inform the consumer of how many GPU cores there are inside the SOC?

Specs sheets exists so that you can compare products in an objective manner.

If you fancy a car analogy, you expect two different cars to have the same amount of power if they have the same engine inside. Unless the manufacturer tells you otherwise in the spec sheet, then as a customer you would expect that same engine = same power.

Because the number of cores tells you how many things you can do at once.

So what other specs should they give? As a CPU designer I am curious. Would you like Vdd? Transistor threshold voltage? Operating current? IPC? I mean these are all important determinants of processing capability. Or do you only want to draw an arbitrary circle around maximum clock rate? How about sustainable clock rate? No? Just maximum? I want to make sure all us CPU designers get it right for you.

During the keynote, Apple didn't even say which processor was in the iPad mini. They just said it was 40% faster than the one in the old iPad mini.

Only because they talked about the iPhone after the iPad

They always save the new specs for iPhone announcements

If Apple weren't about discussing specs, they wouldn't say what's in the iPhone either (which isn't how they do it)

I promise you normal people walking into an apple store asking for an iPad mini, are not even aware it has an A15 chip, let along the frequency of calculations it makes per second. Normal people, will turn it on, open said app and be impressed with how smooth it all is.
No offence, but us here are mostly nerds arguing over what an A15 running at 2.9 vs 3.2 even does in real life (hot tip: pretty much no difference). Heck in real life I will probably not notice a difference between my iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
form factor is a big deal and it’s why people gravitate to a product. That’s why we love apple because they deliver looks and performance while other brands usually do one or the other.
