The thing I don't understand is that the way we were told how it was going to be was that the iPhone5 would have it's own event and later in October there would be the regular event for iPods and the iPad mini. What happened was an extra long iPhone event with the iPods added in. So that kind of makes me wonder if there will be an October event if it's just the iPad mini. All of those mini photos seem to be of the same dummy model you can buy in China. The screen on it looks like a paper mockup. I'm not seeing much lately as to parts leaks which makes me wonder what's going on if it is in production. I know the iPod Touch 5 at least is real and probably will be getting that if the mini is a no show.
[tinfoilhat]Maybe Apple are actually in full control of all these parts leaks etc., and are now holding back on the iPad Mini stuff to allow the iPhone 5 to get all the attention it can, thereby also building up for a bigger surprise when the iPad Mini is released in October.[/tinfoilhat]

I know, I know...but one can dream, right? ;)

I am convinced Apple will announce the iPad mini in October.

I am also convinced the new iPad mini will only be a media tablet.

Reasons:

- In October, Apple will release the new iTunes at the same event. Apple TV and the iPad mini will be a very important front end for the new iTunes.

- Apple has removed the native YouTube app from iOS6. Why? Because they are positioning the Apple TV and iPad mini to be the only media consuming devices.

So I see iOS will be divided into three distinctive market segments in the future.

iPhone (mobile device)

iPad (PC companion)

iPad mini and Apple TV (home entertainment)

But how would it only be a media tablet? They market it as such, but obvious you will be able to run iPad apps and everything else on it. What suggests Apple would restrict their sales like that?

Apple TV is capable of running apps, but Apple have disabled it.

Apple can do anything to their iPad mini to fit their longer term strategies.

They don't want to restrict sales, but they want people to buy iPhone 5 and iPad 3 instead. And at the same time, give the Nexus 7 and KF HD some competitions.

But the question is why would they do it? I think you were stretching when you said the YouTube app was removed for this purpose.

Everything that's ever been indicated about the iPad Mini suggests it just being a smaller iPad. I really don't see how someone could think that it'd just be a media center.

It will be interesting to see the form factor of the display - same as the existing iPad, or do they adopt the new iPhone 5 widescreen?

Either way, so long as they are available with LTE, I'll be buying one and taking it with me everywhere.

I'm still hoping for it. For me it'll be for the kids, I'll buy two immediately assuming a $300 or lower price. Otherwise I'll just get iPad 2's refurbed/used.

I don't understand the need for LTE. Why not just tether your phone? If you use LTE on your iPad won't you have to pay for two phone lines?

Please excuse my ignorance I haven't connected with anything cellular except a phone since air cards, which is why I'm thinking you would end up paying for two lines.

For the iPad you just pay for data. No line necessary.

Well, you don't need two voice lines obviously, but you'll still be paying for an extra subscription plan. Personally I tether it all the way, an extra data plan only for the luxury of not having to mind the tethering isn't worth it to me.

Some people do that and just buy and use the wifi version. Other people don't want a 2 year contract and just want to a data plan. There's all kinds of reason. The current phone I'm using doesn't have data, it's a cheap dumb phone that i don't have to care about but takes calls and that's all i need.

A few reasons from my perspective.

First and foremost is convenience. I just grab my iPad and use it, no need to enable tethering or anything, it just works.

Second, it's not an additional plan, it's another $10 to share my data with my family plan on VZW. I know, many folks have complained about the shared plan, but for me, the costs went down when we went to a shared plan.

Third, on Verizon, you can't tether when making phone calls - so if I'm on the phone and trying to pull up a document (for example) or run a WebEx session on my iPad, tethering won't work for me.

Just a few reasons, but the most important to me: convenience.

Now you're right too. I tether for my work laptop. It' s really handy for getting work done in airports on layovers. And those times when CentryLink is screwing up again.
