Multiple new iPad models are being tested in Cupertino and the nearby Bay Area, potentially confirming rumors suggesting several refreshed iPads are launching in the near future.

New iPad model identifiers have been spotted in device data collected by mobile marketing company Fiksu and were shared by TechCrunch this morning. Four identifiers have been popping up in data logs, but that doesn't necessarily correspond to four new devices as WiFi and WiFi + Cellular iPads historically have different model numbers. Fiksu believes the numbers correspond to between two and four new iPads.

Below are the iPad identifiers that have been found along with their corresponding count, as provided by Fiksu. Only a small number of visits have been seen, which Fiksu says is "about the same number we see being tested about a month before release."

- iPad 7,1 - 17
- iPad 7,2 - 11
- iPad 7,3 - 5
- iPad 7,4 - 10

These identifiers are similar to identifiers for existing iPad Pro models, which are as follows:

- 12.9-inch iPad Pro (Wi-Fi) - iPad 6,7
- 12.9 inch iPad Pro (Cellular) - iPad 6,8
- 9.7-inch iPad Pro (Wi-Fi) - iPad 6,3
- 9.7-inch iPad Pro (Cellular) - iPad 6,4

At the very least, the presence of these identifiers suggests there are a minimum of two new iPad models in the works, in line with rumors suggesting Apple is working on both a revamped 10.5-inch iPad Pro that will effectively replace the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and a new 12.9-inch model.

The 10.5-inch iPad Pro is said to feature a nearly bezel-free edge-to-edge display that allows Apple to fit a larger screen in the same 9.7-inch form factor, and it is said to include an A10X processor and Touch ID built directly into the display.

Rumors sourced from reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have suggested there are supposed to be three new models on the horizon, including a 12.9-inch tablet, a lower-cost 9.7-inch tablet (priced as low as $299), and the flagship 10.5-inch tablet, while Japanese site Mac Otakara has claimed Apple could be working on four iPads, the three mentioned by Kuo along with a 7.9-inch iPad mini Pro model.

Though Fiksu is seeing only four identifiers, it's possible additional iPads are in development but haven't been found in device logs as of yet.

On the other hand, it potentially indicates we're going to get a new 10.5-inch model and a new 12.9-inch model, with no new iPad mini or refreshed lower-end 9.7-inch model. This scenario doesn't fit Mac Otakara's prediction, but should Apple lower the price of the existing 9.7-inch iPad Pro, it does fit in with what Kuo has predicted.

Apple's new iPads could debut as soon as later this month, according to supply chain analysts who shared the information with MacRumors this morning. Apple may be planning an event or a release for late March, perhaps even as early as next week.

Update: Fiksu has released an additional chart that displays the count of new iPad models in its data starting in September. The number of iPad Pro models have been steadily ramping up, leading Fiksu to predict an "imminent" release date within a month.

The March event has gone from a small possibility to probably happening today. I think it could be the 10.5" model, as I know that is set to be announced soon (and I don't think it'll be at WWDC).

If there is a 10.5" iPad Pro then there will be an Apple event, there is no way that Apple will not want to announce it on stage especially if it has a bezel less design.

Invites will probably go out later this week, around Wednesday to Friday

Wherever my feet take me…
Unless Apple only slightly ups the specs, Apple would surprise me by not having some kind of event. The iDevices are their pride and joy, their flagship products, and Apple loves making a spectacle.

I'd also like an upgraded/redesigned Mac lineup. Besides the MacBook Pro with TouchBar, everything else hasn't been touched in years. I know a lot depends on Intel and its CPUs, but upgrade to NVMe SSDs, ditch spinning hard drives, upgrade everything to USB-C/TB3, get better graphics.

WWDC wouldn't make sense to begin with and isn't hardware based primarily as it has been in the past. It's primarily for the developers and iOS/MacOS/WatchOS demo's.

The Keynote is likely ending this month or first week of April.

This new 10.5 inch bezeless iPad could possibly be my first iPad. If it had an OLED screen then it would be an automatic buy for me. Still, this new model sounds interesting. Hope it comes with at least 4gb of memory.

Or we're getting new 12.9" and 9.7" iPad Pros and the 10.5" and cheaper Air 3 rumors are nonsense.

Ming Chi Kuo disagrees and so do a lot of other reputable leakers. There probably is a 10.5" iPad Pro that will be announced at the event.

Apple did announce WWDC early, so I'm in doubt about a March event.

Actually, I think for the iMac Apple should going to standard SATA SSDs, instead of forcing the consumer either choose between a ridiculously expensive 2GB/s PCIe SSD or a cheap and ridiclously slow HDD. I understand the Mac Pro, but it would benefit more iMac users to have a cheaper SSD option that will still smoke any HDD. For the same price, Apple could easily offer base 256GB SATA SSD and 512GB+ SATA SSDs for the higher end models, and I'm will to bet most would rather have a 512GB SATA SSD over a PCIe 128GB SSD and 1 TB HDD Fusion Drive.

Awwww, hell yeah. New iPads!!:p:D

:(... that, I'm not going to buy cuz my current iPads still do "consumption" quite well. From what I've heard, a lot of people are in the same boat. Hopefully those who want new iPads will get them, but for me, there hasn't been anything compelling to cause me to even want to upgrade.

3D touch please, inconsistent behavior between iPhone and iPad hurts

A Ipad mini refresh would be nice, would be even nicer if they realized Samsung tablets are all over the 2.5 mil sq foot workplace I am at, and priced to them to at least be looked at instead of being laughed out of the purchasing department due to cost at the mere mention of them. Surface Pro's get more traction than Ipad's do. Samsung invested very heavily in industrial capable mdm and device compatability.

Well, whoopie - flipping - do!

Better late than never, but then we said that about the new MBPs, which turned out to be a bad joke.

Except that makes no sense whatsoever.

The 10.5" and 9.7" Pro are the same product. The former being the new-technology-evolution of the latter. No reason whatsoever for both to exist.

The "Air 3" will probably be a very slightly tweaked Air 2 config (if at all), at $100 less than today. A very respectable offering in the lineup.

The 12.9" Pro will likely be updated internally with the same chip as being deployed in the 10.5", and perhaps a Tru Tone display with Wide Color.

But the 10.5" will be the only truly "new" technology product.

Calling it now, the $299 iPad will be the Air 2 with a price drop. It will only be offered in a 32GB model.

Plus the current iPad Pro will drop to $499 for 32gb...making way for the 10.5 inch to assume the $599 price point.
Next year the 9.7 Pro will be dropped completely.

But I agree with others, that the product line is getting way to confusing. I would prefer to just have a Pro line of 12 and 10.5 and one iPad Classic (Air 2 but don't call it that).
