- Every apple pencil comes with the adapter for free.
Every new unit of this 8 year old previous-generation model being bought now comes with the adapter, yes.
All those already sold units out in the wild? $10 for the adapter.

The EU decision means that Apple will likely stop selling the 9th generation iPad in 2024.
Existing models still can be sold when that rule kicks in, only new hardware needs to be adapted.

HOW did this decision make any sense to anyone?
This is pure design by committee that Steve jobs was trying so very hard to get rid of.
It sounds like a cost-cutting move. But I agree that it would have been better to add Apple Pencil 2 support. The Apple Pencil 1 design was questionable to begin with.

My want list for an iPad update:
- USB C
- Compatibility with the Gen 1 apple pencil
- More dongles
- Worse Apple Gen 1 charging UX experience

Well, now you know why there wasn’t an announcement event… fragile egos would have been hurt by the outraged silence.

My theory is that Tim finally ran out of the bulk purchase of lightning ports he purchased years ago and is forced to USB C ports now.

lol... to be confirmed, but it seems from the product information that the adaptor for the pencil only works with the new iPad.

If this is true, I do hope there are real hardware constraints.

As a user of a first gen Pencil on a first gen iPad Pro: This is an ASTONISHINGLY stupid decision.
I frequently need to charge up the pencil. I do not want to carry around (and lose) an ESSENTIAL adapter to do so! Crazy!

My guess is that the base iPad users aren't big buyers of the Apple Pencil, and hence Apple was fine with a workaround to maintain the ability for those who want it. If it were a bigger selling point, they'd have found a way to make the Pencil 2 work with the landscape camera taking up the space where the magnetic charger is on the Pro and Air.

Think this just means that the 3rd gen design is going to be different, probably even just going to USB-C too instead of being stuck on the iPad.

Someone can now build a USB-C dock that just looks like a pencil holder for your desk.

My guess is that they will move the magnets to accommodate the landscape camera. No way is the Apple Pencil 3 going to have plug-in charging.

I hope all of the reviews, including MR, not only call this out which I expect they will, but also withhold their recommendations. Maybe that would get the message across to Tim that he went too far this time. Big price increase, no 2nd Gen Apple Pencil, more difficulty in using the 1st Gen Apple Pencil compared to the 9th Gen iPad, but it comes in colors…what a joke. Maybe Apple could do a iPad 3 here and fix this in the spring with a better 11th Gen iPad with an A15 and 2nd Gen Apple Pencil support at $349-379.

Clearly leadership at Apple will never actually have to use this iPad. It comes off as a “ah heck save a buck for make more profit” versus a make a great experience for the user. Come on Apple you can do better.

Nice looking iPad — I actually prefer the thicker bezel. But not being compatible with the 2nd generation Pencil is strange. I suppose the person that owned the base iPad might upgrade to this model, and they would already have the Pencil that works with it.

I think it’s a missed opportunity here to bring back Firewire for charging the pencil AND the iPad at the SAME time…like magic.

However you would need to pay for a monthly subscription fee to turn on FW charging that you can easily purchase using Apple Pay™.

Yeah bring back firewire. :cool::cool::cool:
