What magical thing would Apple do with Apple "Intelligence" that would require so much processing power and memory? Especially when they are not able to do basic things right. And I mean it not only in regards to Apple "Intelligence".
A local LLM will require as much processing power as available in iOS 19.

iPads are constantly rated very high by users on any retailer you can check. They sell in much bigger volumes than the Mac. It seems like users are very happy with iPadOS — it doesn’t mean that Apple shouldn’t improve, but I think it wouldn’t be very intelligent to scrap the foundations of a very successful OS.
I'm not advocating that they scrap the macOS/Mach Kernel foundations of iPadOS, but I need a more straightforward way of dealing with installing fonts (the current way is complete and utter rubbish and is a solved problem) and a way for iPadOS to deal with recording from more than one source at the same time. There are other issues that need to be addressed that can get to the last mile for most users who want to work on just their iPad and not worry about having to move over to a Mac for certain workflows. I'm not talking about 2% edge case workflows, I'm talking about things that macOS has been able to do since it was also known as System 7. I realize that doesn't enrich Apple's coffers as much, so I won't be holding my breath.

Is OLED really needed? All I can see on my MacBook Pro is a fantastic display with true blacks. I don't know te technical comparison too deep, maybe OLED would increase battery life a little bit. I don't worry about burn-in because displays in iPhone and Apple Watch. No issue at all with Apple OLED.
It's needed depending on what you do. If you watch a bunch of videos, then it would be a noticeable improvement in dark scenes. It would also be an improvement if you look at/read text in dark mode, like if you are a coder.

Anyone who games on the iPad will be welcoming a new version. The M1 iPad Pro struggles to maintain 30fps on games like RE4 and even the M4 can struggle to maintain performance if you up the graphics. A lot of AAA games also need 16GB, so this base on M5 would be appreciated.
Didn’t Apple Marketing position the mini as a gaming device hence placing the display refresh modular the other direction. Mini is still on an iPhone chip it seems to be capable while the iPad Pro is positioned as content creation, one had to question the real-world usage of editing content on an iPad Pro vice a MacBook Air or even Pro considering the iPad Pro will throttle under load.

How come you question the need for M2+ chips in iPads in one post but then state your hope for an M2 chip in the iPad Mini in your next post? Are you doing anything on the Mini to utilize the potential power offered?

In response to your question, for Macs people do real world stress tests using exports, renders, and file transfers in programs like Final Cut, Blender, and Lightroom. Similar (or same) apps exist on iPad, so I assume people are using them and benefit from the faster speeds.
But the Mini has a significantly smaller screen so I don’t know how useful those types of apps are on it, not to mention the significantly smaller thermal capacity of the Mini.
Why not streamline the silicon production by having Axx chips for iPhones and accessories and Mxx chips for all iPads and Macs.

iPad mini should receive a capable Mxx chip as it has the potential to use the pencil, while not optimal it doesn’t seem to get the same love of at all compare to the rest of its siblings, the base iPad should be replaced with the iPad Air. There is so much overlap at this point it’s wasteful. Apple Inc. is the master of milking technology and features. Mothers Nature take a hike. 😝

The only reason I would update my iPad Pro at this stage if they would give me back the damm 3.5 audio jack so I can use my preferred set of headphones. Insane not to have one on a device that big. I hate to use dongles for something so trivial.

What more do you want,..its just a screen! Lol, it needs absolutely nothing nothing else other than an internal upgrade.
Well you’ve cut off half of my comment, I wasn’t criticising! However your statement that products only need internal upgrades is a bit limiting no? I hope you don’t work in product development.

I wish I wasn’t ones of the few people who had serious eye issues with the iPad Pro M4. I have never had any real issues with a screen until I got that iPad and it had to go back. I’d consider this if it didn’t have the same screen but it’s looking like I’m out of luck.

The iPad Mini not having an M chip is likely a matter of physical limitation. M chips can’t fit in just any size device due to thermal and battery constraints. The Mini is significantly smaller than its bigger siblings, and therefore used significantly differently. It’s more iPhone-like than iPad-like.

But you still didn’t answer why you question the need for M2+ in iPads even though you ask for exactly that.

A bigger iPad Pro. 15-16” would be great. Or if any Apple device deserves the folding treatment, the pro would be it.

Thr A17Pro as a gaming device is a bit of a joke. AAA games will run on this chip, but performance will be really poor - There are lots of videos on YouTube showing iPhone 15 Pros struggling to maintain 30 fps, even with low graphics. Factor in the higher screen resolution of the Mini and lower GPU core count and it's likely to be a dire performer for games like RE4, Asassins Creed and Death Stranding.

So your assumption is that if Apple puts 16Gb instead of 8Gb memory on cheaper iPads Pro it gonna be unnecessary and pointless update, right?
Literally all I want in a new model, having to upgrade to a terabyte of storage to get this is an insane amount of money for a tablet, especially when you consider 8 gigs isn’t even the norm for M4, 16 is

i doubt this. Ipad pros have been on biannual update cycles pretty much since the beginning; and they released a new one last year.

Also people just don't upgrade ipads with the same frequency as they do phones.

The 18 month cycle is fine these annual cycles are overblown considering the only changes are the silicon and possible RAM. It’s not like the iPad Pro can be folded it’s the same slab like the Air, mini and OG. The OS runs the same on an Axx or Mxx chip, most of the people using iPads are casual gamers, basic tasks, entertainment and a few creative content creators. The thermals are still limited on an iPad Pro. If Apple is so keen on it just merge the iPad and MBAir with a detachable screen that auto switches between iOS and macOS.

People here will attempt to convince others that this is a bad idea for XYZ reason only for Apple to do a 180 degrees and release one then the tone changes to it being the best device to be released.

I recall when many wanted USB-C and those few tried to convince the rest that Lightening had its benefits blah blah and USB-C cannot maintain an IPX rating blah blah and guess what it happened and where are those naysayers now, being Debbie Downers on other fronts.

I’m not sure why you’re talking about update cycles and merging iPad and Mac. All I asked was why you questioned why people needed M2+ chips in iPad in post #18, then you asked for an M2+ chip in an iPad in post #19—you’re contradicting yourself. This is the 3rd time I asked. Either we’re having some honest miscommunication (hard to imagine) or you’re skirting the question.

but the screens have a big difference doesnt it, i *think* the ipad air is not promotion nor does it have the higher refresh rate of the ipad pro. That made no difference side by side?
I like the ProMotion, but I only really notice that if I quickly scroll down a page of text. My Pro OLED screen has better viewing angles, and the colors pop more. But the screen on her 13 inch Air would have been fine for me. I wanted the FaceID. Hopefully by the next time I am due for an upgrade, which should be years since my M4 Pro iPad is great, the Air has finally been given FaceID.

Now that Adobe is putting AI tools in their iPad software, my M1 is starting to show its age.

The reason Apple releases every year (or so) is because of people who want or need to update older devices. Since you just purchased, Apple releasing another model should be irrelevant to you. Not sure why you are complaining.
thank. you. oh. my. gosh.

I’ve been coming on here since 2007 and can’t believe there are still people wondering why Apple updates their products lmao.

With components being mass produced in April and Kuo mentioning that M5 could begin mass production in the 1st half of the year, it is possible to see the new iPad pro at WWDC. Expecting no change other than the processor upgrade. Also possible that Apple moves the iPad Pro to a two year refresh cycle.

This is a very overlooked point for pretty much all devices. Every tech industry is the same. TV's, audio, cars etc etc. Each years new model isn't aimed at last years purchasers, it's looking at those with old devices. Having a generational update every year is unrealistic. Yearly spec bumps are for those with older devices or people who just want to be on the cutting edge. You can't have it both ways year on year.
Even beyond that, what’s even more seriously overlooked is that there are BILLIONS of people in the world without iPads. To think that the only people buying iPads are those that already own an iPad is to not understand the larger dynamics at play here. Apple’s making products/services they’re expecting to sell to anyone, unrelated to whether they currently own an iteration of that product or not. IF they’re successful, they grow the user base, developers see more purchases of their apps, and the cycle feeds itself.

Yearly spec bumps are so that those people that don’t own iPads are always able to buy the best iPad made (of that model) within the last 12 months or so. If this rumor is true, that says a lot about what how bright Apple feels the near future of the iPad Pro is.

Seriously, just bought one for Christmas. This is ridiculous, can I have a device for at least 1 - 2 years before a new one. No one needs a new iPad every year.
They've been releasing them every 16-18 months since the beginning, this is nothing new. It will be slightly faster than the one you just bought which you're free to keep for years. Do you complain when a new car model is released every year because you just bought one?
