Honestly my ideal setup would be 12.9" iPad, with proper external display support, with the ability to host macOS in a VM.

I want macOS to be able to run Xcode and terminal actions to support software development. I'd run everything else in the iPadOS environment - safari/mail/notes/etc.
Wouldn’t a native, touch enabled, Xcode development environment be better than macOS in a VM though?

I still don’t see any good reason to buy an iPad Pro over the iPad Air. It seems like a better use of money to buy the M1 MacBook Air over the iPad Pro.

That being said, I am really hoping Apple changes that at WWDC. There is no reason they cannot bring Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro to the M1 iPad. In fact, I think it would benefit Apple to release Mac apps re-imagined for iPad as an example for what a truly capable iPad can do. It will show third-party developers what can be done and how their apps can be adapted for touch.

In the meantime, I’ll stick with my iPad Air
The only reason I am buying it is for the new screen. As the iPad is just a large screen, I'd say this is a pretty good reason.

It sounds like you are asking for a MacBook…
There are benefits of the form factor that the iPad has that a MacBook does not. I also like to be able to take handwritten notes on my iPad. Also, the screen is way better. Wanting Apple to make iPadOS a little more capable and less hamstrung to better match the powerful hardware doesn't mean I'd prefer a MacBook.

MacBook Pro 13 w/16GB memory and 1TB SSD = $1899.
iPad Pro 12.9 w/16GB memory, 1TB SSD and Magic Keyboard= $2148.

Which one is more functional and why? As exciting as a 16GB/1TB iPad Pro would be, dropping more coin than a full-fledged MBP is a hard thing to do for me.

People are going to be disappointed by WWDC if they except some kind of iPad OS revolution. As a standalone this looks like a very strong update to the 2018 iPad and probably the 2020 iPad (which I am not sure should have been released, but they had to have an updated iPad to debut with the Magic Keyboard and new trackpad compatibility)

Sometimes I help my family with doing a few things on their iPad but most of the time I just give up and tell them it can't be done, because I honestly can't figure it out.
Some folks just could never figure out how the Mac worked and were always more comfortable on the Apple II. That’s just how things go in tech. You can read a LOT of this around the time macOS was introduced, too.

Maybe because there will be another variant of M chip so perhaps that could be the case (ie. the big iMac needs updating too so perhaps thats why)

I don’t understand why Apple didn’t announce the new iPads at WWDC along with updates to iPad OS. It would make sense to announce the two together.

Screen is wayyyyyyy better.
You can’t go back once you use it.
Yeah, but is that really worth the money? Maybe for some people it is. It depends how you use the iPad and what you use it for. At nearly twice the price of the iPad Air (which is always on sale somewhere) for the base model 12.9 iPad Pro, it’s not worth it to me, and I imagine many others will come to the same conclusion as well.

I’m not hoping for anything remarkable from iPadOS, but I’m hoping for some improvement with apps. If we could see some of Apple‘s high-profile MacOS apps adapted to iPadOS that would make me pretty happy.

Well, I can imagine Windows apps, so, no?
Most windows apps have a Mac version. If not, you can always run a virtualised App. Worst case, you just boot your Mac into windows and use the app.
Apple themselves butchered gaming on Mac when they blocked Nvidia GPU support, and for over a decade shipped underpowered integrated GPUs in most of their laptops/desktops. Furthermore, using Metal instead of Vulkun further hampered cross-platform games from coming to the Mac.

iPad is held up by software has been the issue for 4 years. It's powerful enough to run desktop class software but isn't running desktop class software.
Yea, we've been hearing this for half a decade now. I'm losing confidence that Apple actually ever intends to make the iPadOS as useful as MacOS. It's always half-measures with major compromises.

Amazingly (or not), there are reviewers that do not understand the difference between OS and app. Title is misleading, M1 performance I not "held back" by iPadOS. Possibly under-utilised, but not "held back"!

Editing 8k video and exporting it is likely taxing the M1 in the iPad. Likewise applying filter of really large photos is also demanding. Perhaps the reviewer are Mac biased or not compute heavy user to appreciate the M1 in the iPP?

What I miss most is the possibility to run Mac Apps on iPadOS - that would be amazing. Blender and fusion 360 on iPad, that would be fun. "Full" version of word, excel etc would be very useful as well.

I’m more partial to AppleOS. Not as any bolted together conglomeration (that’s been tried multiple times and failed), but as a way to remove “iPad” from the OS name for when this is eventually provided for non-iPad devices.

Apple should be ashamed that I get more functionality out of a $300 Chrome OS tablet than I do from an iPad Pro. Sure it's slower, but it does things that the iPad won't. Not that the iPad couldn't, but Apple hamstrings it with iPadOS and a crappy, ineffective browser.

When people say, "can't wait to see what iPad OS 15 brings." ...what exactly are you expecting?

List something specific that you think makes a meaningful difference to iPad that also makes sense for iPad.

Did you hear that? It's everyone on the internet saying to just buy a Macbook then. :)

I've thought the same thing, but never posted it knowing what the response would be...

Makes sense to me. Purchase the right tool for the job.

I can measure the dimensions of my garage with my valued 24" Starrett rule that I use for woodworking. A much better choice would be a 30' Stanley tape measure.

Saying the iPad Pro is being "held back" by the OS is funny.

Can we get an iPad-like device from Apple running macOS ? With most of the guts the same in the M1-powered products, it shouldn’t be that difficult and it would make a lot of sense.

My point was, in the larger sense, nothing can do everything, everything is limited, including macOS. For the vast majority, they can do ALL the things they want with whatever they buy. Because, “ALLL their things” is a limited subset of what computing devices can do. Once you’ve accounted for all those folks, you get folks that need something specific to some OS (Windows, Mac, iPad, etc.)

Most folks computing today don’t need a Mac to do what they need to do. They’re using either some form of Windows or some iPad.

And my $100 microwave has functionality the iPad doesn’t. Symbian could do a lot of things the iPhone can’t, you know how it ended up. In the real world, 90% of used real tablets out there are iPads.

I'd really like some clarity and maybe developers would as well. This isn't a boutique 'hobby' Apple is in. Apple makes as much from iPad as they do from Macintosh.

I'd love it if they came right out and stated:

  1. MacOS will never have touch screen or pencil support or 5G modem support
  2. iPad will never run MacOS and touch will always be primary interaction over the keyboard & mouse addition
  3. We're opening up iPad OS to more 'Mac-like' interaction models though and true multi tasking
  4. iPad OS is capped at 13" screen and if you plug in a 5K monitor, you'll have up to two full iPad OS desktops with full drag & drop functionality
  5. Low end Macs and iPads will be 1:1 in performance for the foreseeable future
  6. Users will need to choose if they want a primary touch w/ less desktop features OR primary mouse & keyboard with a desktop OS

But today, we have iPads that cost $1000 more than MacBooks that do less. If the iPad is just a very powerful Wacom tablet, then that's fine as well. I love my iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard. I have used it exclusively for 2 weeks on vacation and it's great and very usable but I put a lot of tasks on hold until I was back at my iMac. So I don't think it needs to go full MacOS but my biggest gripe was true multi tasking.

I admit, I travel with an iPad Pro + MacBook Pro + iPhone 11 Pro and I use all 3 of them for different uses. My bag is heavy but I wouldn't leave my Mac or iPad at home if I'm on a business trip. If I had to leave one, it'd be the iPad and that's okay.

For those that are waiting for a miracle, keep holding your breath. Apple releasing an iPadOS that actually functions like a real computer is like asking Tim Cook to turn straight. Ain't gonna happen for the reasons:

1) You buy TWO apple devices to get something done rather than having an all in one solution
2) Apple margins
3) Why would apple destroy their own laptops when an iPad can become a laptop and a tablet at the same time?
4) Most important reason of all: extra $ for all the dongles, accessories that is needed to get anything working on an iPad/macbook

I'm writing my last replies using this M1 mini. My 5950x is here and sayonara to apple for a long while.
