iPadOS needs to be it’s own thing since they aren’t planning on merging the iPad Pro and the Mac. iPadOS is a phone operating system that is very much unchanged. It needs to be redone from the ground up.

I got an iPad Air for work (they don't allow email on personal computers) although it's nice and runs smoothly I can only use it for 20% of my actual work. Something as simple as copy and pasting text from word doc stored on the company server to an email was an issue. The only thing it's good for is viewing. Viewing email, websites, power points, movies, YouTube, ext. I don't know how people create on these things.

I personally would never spend more than $300 on an iPad.

I don't watch movies on my iPad so I guess my choice to keep my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 that works perfectly and is as fast as anything in use, was the right choice.

It will be interesting to hear if the original Magic Keyboard works on the new 12.9. Has anyone seen anything on this yet? UPDATE: According to this video, it fits perfectly. So what was the issue that Apple said it was not compatible?
hahah the only video that mentions the perfect ish fit on the older keyboard.
I was watching the youtubers and didn't see any mention.

“But the iPad Pro (with more power than most folks need) isn't competing against other tablets. It's competing against the Mac (that also has more power than most folks need).”
Fixed that for ‘em.

I love how the statement is “TEH OS IS LIMITING THE POWARS”, then they provide an example where the APP is limiting. :) Could have just as well used an example of an app that’s not even ON the iPad. “The OS is limiting because the app I need to use hasn’t been released for the iPad.”

Apple knows better than these reviewers making controversial statements for click revenue.
Haven’t watched any of them. :) Wondering if anyone bemoans the lack of a file system (which every computing device has) and multi-tasking (by which they PROBABLY mean background tasking). BUT, not wondering TOO much LOL

iPad Pro has the same M1 chip as a Mac now. Yet, Mac has every sort of application you can imagine or ever need.iPadOS & iOS are being held back by Apple's insistence on using only Apple's approved public API's, the App Store & then the App Review Process. The 30% cut only adds salt to the wound.
Apple's hardware team has made an incredible product. But I'm sure their team also feels the pain when their greatest iPad is unable to compete against windows PCs & tablets in terms of general purpose computing & gaming.

False. It is empowered by the simplicity of iOS.
Give it a desktop OS and people will complain it’s not a tablet any longer.

I’m not sure if you‘re being sarcastic but I like this view. A reviewer said iPad compete with a Mac? Well, that’s new to me. If I want a Mac I‘ll buy a Mac. Why would I consider an iPad if I want a Mac? 🤔 That doesn’t make any sense.

Do any of the reviewers say what version of iOS is on these devices?

EDIT - MacStories states their device shipped with iPadOS 14.5

Runs iPadOS 14.5 out of the box. iPadOS 14.5 comes preinstalled with this iPad Pro and has Center Stage, which is exclusive to this device. Interestingly, I had initially upgraded my review unit to iPadOS 14.6 beta 3 so I could restore my iPad Pro backup, but Center Stage wasn’t working in that beta release, so I downgraded to iPadOS 14.5.1 by downloading the firmware from Apple’s servers, and everything was fine again.

Did you hear that? It's everyone on the internet saying to just buy a Macbook then. :)

I've thought the same thing, but never posted it knowing what the response would be...
Honestly my ideal setup would be 12.9" iPad, with proper external display support, with the ability to host macOS in a VM.

I want macOS to be able to run Xcode and terminal actions to support software development. I'd run everything else in the iPadOS environment - safari/mail/notes/etc.

I'm curious, why does the iPad OS version matter? You can always upgrade it.

Simple is fine for the standard iPad, and maybe the iPad Air. For the iPad Pro, which has crazy powerful hardware, Apple needs to push iPadOS to make it better at multi-tasking, having multiple panes or apps open, and working between apps. While they keep pushing the bounds of the hardware, they just haven't given iPadOS enough attention/thought. Look at the people who love and use the iPad Pro, like Federico Viticci, has to say. He tweeted "... It's an incredible hardware achievement that is waiting for a more powerful iPadOS and pro apps." I also love my iPad Pro but the software isn't a perfect fit yet, I think Apple can do better.

I was just curious if we might get the final of 14.6 this week, assuming the new devices shipped with it, which, it looks like their shipping with 14.5.

I don’t understand why Apple didn’t announce the new iPads at WWDC along with updates to iPad OS. It would make sense to announce the two together.

I really feel like iOS is for doing quick easy tasks that you'd do on a phone, and the iPad could just be so much more. When in order to save something to Dropbox you have to press "Share" and then "Export" and then "Other" and then "Dropbox" and then still choose where the hell you want to save it, when on a Mac you just drag and drop it in one simple gesture... I really don't know how Apple expects people to do anything complex on an iPad. And the apalling YouTube app or the forced full-screen on all apps. Sometimes I help my family with doing a few things on their iPad but most of the time I just give up and tell them it can't be done, because I honestly can't figure it out.

It sounds like you are asking for a MacBook…

I literally did a made a YouTube video about this and I got “lambasted” in the comments. We should be just as passionate about the software as we are about the M1 being in the iPad.

I still don’t see any good reason to buy an iPad Pro over the iPad Air. It seems like a better use of money to buy the M1 MacBook Air over the iPad Pro.

That being said, I am really hoping Apple changes that at WWDC. There is no reason they cannot bring Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro to the M1 iPad. In fact, I think it would benefit Apple to release Mac apps re-imagined for iPad as an example for what a truly capable iPad can do. It will show third-party developers what can be done and how their apps can be adapted for touch.

In the meantime, I’ll stick with my iPad Air

Screen is wayyyyyyy better.
You can’t go back once you use it.

Almost 30 years ago I was being productive on a laptop with an 8.5” screen with 800x600 resolution and 64 colors. I could have several apps open, and stack and size the windows however I wanted (Windows 3.0.) Now the iPad has this hi-res 13” screen, M1 processor, and 16GB RAM - and barely supports having more than one app in view. Surely Apple could add much more versatile multi-tasking to iPadOS.
