Can we get an iPad-like device from Apple running macOS ? With most of the guts the same in the M1-powered products, it shouldn’t be that difficult and it would make a lot of sense.
That’s more likely than a combined device. And, as macOS sales begin to drop, I could imagine some future Mac being made up of an iPad chassis attached permanently to something like a magic keyboard to save development costs. To continue to make Macs as efficiently as possible for the few who still want them.

Almost 30 years ago I was being productive on a laptop with an 8.5” screen with 800x600 resolution and 64 colors. I could have several apps open, and stack and size the windows however I wanted (Windows 3.0.) Now the iPad has this hi-res 13” screen, M1 processor, and 16GB RAM - and barely supports having more than one app in view. Surely Apple could add much more versatile multi-tasking to iPadOS.
How is it productive to have stacked and sized small windows on a device display that is already small?

You can split 2 apps side by side on iPadOS, if you can figure out how. We have bad habits from desktop OS's that Apple is trying to eschew with iPadOS.

My 2018 iPad Pro feels held back by iPadOS. No surprise that a machine 50% faster also feels that way.
Of course the new iPad is hamstrung by the limitations of iPadOS.

My 2018 iPad Pro is hamstrung my IPadOS and it's two years old.

Not once have I felt my 2018 iPad Pro is lagging but I mainly use it as a content consumption device. I'd update my 11" if it had the new screen, but since I know for sure I'll want that when they add it I'll just wait (probably).

Mac sales have done nothing of the sort. They've blown past iPad in the pandemic era. Real work is still done on computers, not iPads. If you can get away with an iPad, fine. But that's all you're doing. Getting away with it.

Let’s see, what should Apple do:

• Continue with a record-selling tablet path excelling with new profesional implementations like AR, medical uses or art.
• Make it a worse macOS device.

Don’t get me wrong, we all want iPadOS to progress, just in different senses. For many (majority in real world, it seems) of us the iPad is exciting because it allows things never possible before or with a much more pleasant experience. Some of them wouldn’t even want a Mac and won’t consider it as a competitor at the same price level. And there are already many many apps that take advantage of M1.

For those that are waiting for a miracle, keep holding your breath. Apple releasing an iPadOS that actually functions like a real computer is like asking Tim Cook to turn straight. Ain't gonna happen for the reasons:

1) You buy TWO apple devices to get something done rather than having an all in one solution
2) Apple margins
3) Why would apple destroy their own laptops when an iPad can become a laptop and a tablet at the same time?
4) Most important reason of all: extra $ for all the dongles, accessories that is needed to get anything working on an iPad/macbook

I'm writing my last replies using this M1 mini. My 5950x is here and sayonara to apple for a long while.
Those reasons don’t make any sense:

1, 2 and 3 (Basically the same): Apple has done it many times in the past, few companies take as many risks. If they could sell an amazing device that was both a tablet and a laptop, they would — because it would offset any combined loose of sales.

4) Dongles are irrelevant in Apple’s profit.

Maybe because there will be another variant of M chip so perhaps that could be the case (ie. the big iMac needs updating too so perhaps thats why)
Maybe but a lot of the reviews are this hardware is great but the software is lacking. Apple still hasn’t really provided a compelling reason why the iPad Pro exists. And now that it uses the same chip as Macs of course reviewers are going to wonder what’s the purpose of this machine and where does it go.

When people say, "can't wait to see what iPad OS 15 brings." ...what exactly are you expecting?

List something specific that you think makes a meaningful difference to iPad that also makes sense for iPad.
Fully functional browser and true multiple display support.

No, they’ve not blown past iPad. Everyone’s sales were raised. The pandemic blip will keep the Mac relevant for a little while longer. BUT there are more people growing up with, using and are comfortable with the iPadOS than the Mac just from sheer numbers alone. And those folks, more and more, are going to want devices that fit that form factor and interface. The likelihood of macOS being around in 20 years is similar to the likelihood of ProDOS being around today.

I’m pretty sure there’s still a few installs of ProDOS out there. :)

So, you’re saying you bought two devices, just one wasn’t Apple. K
k what? I have plenty of apple devices. I'm telling you keep holding your breath if you want an ipad that actually functions like a laptop as well. But knowing how apple rolls, cut, copy, paste functions took what 4 years? Apple has the technical prowess to do exactly that but their target is the money. It is never about user experience with apple.

BUT my children use the ipad solely for school and it functions fine because they never grew up with an actual computer. So to apple's credit they know what they are doing (for the new generation). For us oldies these devices are just toys.

And my $100 microwave has functionality the iPad doesn’t. Symbian could do a lot of things the iPhone can’t, you know how it ended up. In the real world, 90% of used real tablets out there are iPads.
The microwave comparison is absurd.
I do know how it ended up. I haven’t bought a new iPad since the Air 2. I would if it fulfilled the same purpose something that a cheaper yet more capable device in the same category does.

Have any of the reviews mentioned if the M1 iPads have the "Eye Tracking" feature of the latest iOS w/iPhone 12s?

This would push me over the edge to get one, as the camera position for video calls is really awkward without Eye Tracking.

So, if the iPad Prince it too cowed to make a real OS for the iPad, then when does the MacBook Prince make a touch screen MacBook Air 2-in-1, which I would gladly try out as an alternative to my Surface Book.

Oh, right, the Apple King wants to continue bilking, I mean 'servicing' the same people who think the App Store is overpriced to 'protect them', too.

So much for the 'Think Different' motto and the ambitions of the Princes to give the consumers what THEY want.

Somehow I wouldn't want my children to be 'harvested' by a "We Know What You Need" Corporation.

The Sheeple do not pay the Shepherd, the Mutton Butcher and Wool Merchant do, in a similar situation.

well choose your poison if it's not apple then it's google. I'd rather it not be google.

The kids actually don't even know how to use a keyboard to type, it's all on screen for them. In fact a file system is like alien to them as well. BUT for apps, apple is King. I would never bother with apple if not for the apps and the high quality apps offered for the ipad.

I don't mind having two devices but seeing how a MS surface functions (aside from crappy tablet apps) apple would kill their own laptops if the ipadOS actually works like macos. For obvious money reasons apple will never ever allow this to happen. So iPads are for children and entertainment purposes for adults. Of course college courses with an ipad will suffice as well.

Monitor support is a big example. The iPad Pro can only use an external monitor for apps that choose to support it, which is limited now to some games, video-editing tools... and that's mostly it. It doesn't extend your iPad to a second desktop area, or allow multiple apps on different screens. This is what you'd expect monitor support on an M1-equipped iPad would add, and yet here we are. Apple's developers conference (WWDC) is weeks away, and should reveal where the next iPadOS is heading. I'd expect big changes for the M1 iPad to be announced, but it's hard to predict anything yet.
I don't understand the push for this, and I don't think Apple will ever add multi-display support without completely shifting the paradigm of the iPad. It's a TOUCH device first and foremost! Sure, they added keyboard and mouse support, but those are NOT the primary methods of input. They were added as convenience. As a TOUCH device, it doesn't make sense to add support for multiple monitor setups. You would have to use a keyboard and mouse for that.

The iPad is not being "held back" by iOS. iOS is more powerful and streamlined than MacOS, Windows, etc. It is optimized for direct manipulation and that is what the iPad is focused on. The operating system is not limited in any way. If there are any limitations it is the applications that are developed for it.

I'm disappointed in the lack of pure render evaluations benchmarking... I know Marques Brownlee did one 4K video render test vs the A12Z, but I want to see more from other software suites, with different workloads.

I've learned to avoid the shill reviews, the two biggest being Dalrymple (although I generally enjoy listening to his podcast, but he's a shill and perhaps a paid Apple shill) and Rene Ritchie, who is the biggest Apple Shill on the Internet. iJustine is up there as well, but she is pleasant to look at, so that's a plus.

Re: the machine itself---the mini LED is a great sounding feature until you realize you don't get the full Mini LED experience unless you've viewing HDR content. Basically, the Liquid Retina XDR works just like a pro display XRD---just a normal, appropriately scaled retina display display until HDR comes on.

Nice machine. Terrible value proposition unless your work (or pleasure) involves consistent HDR use.

Yes, I know. I really hope WWDC will bring some steps towards improvements. Final Cut would be logical step as its Apple's own software. Logic etc. too

Ideally I hope we won't have to buy Final Cut again or at least the price will be very low.
