At this point I‘d settle for basics like Calculator

A browser is a calculator. Hell, a computer is a calculator. Google is a more powerful and feature-rich calculator than some silly app could ever be.

Been making this point for a long time. It’s the OS and mobile apps that hold iPads back. The 2017 Pro and on handle anything thrown at it with ease.

Apple has given the iPad in its current iteration an identity crisis. Originally it was mostly content consumption with some productivity. Now, “your next computer will be an iPad” marketing push of last year. I tried to make it work, for productivity, but ultimately got frustrated with the OS and bought a mac again. Gifted the 2020 Pro to my wife.

I use my iPad Pro (2018 12.9”) as my daily driver, as I will the new 2021 I’ll be getting in a few days, for both my work (basic business use - product development and management, customer management, sales, etc.) and during off hours for entertainment and hobby use. It’s what I love about it - it’s dual personality, being able to function effectively as a laptop for work, and then as a tablet when I don’t need the keyboard.

It’s funny how when we talk about the price of the iPad Pro being high (compared to the MacBook Air/Pro 13”, but really Apple offers a bunch of devices that all fall within a very narrow range. The iPhone Pro Max with a screen 1/4 the size of the iPad Pro 12.9” can cost the same as the iPad Pro 12.9”, and the same is true with the MacBook Air/Pro 13”. You can also get an M1 iMac with a screen 3 times the size of the iPad Pro for effectively the same price. So what items are priced right, priced low or priced too high?
The issue re pricing for me was that I was planning to replace both devices but they have made the iPad Pro 12.9” so expensive it’s a difficult decision now. I will probably have to chose one or the other rather than both. If they made a 15” iPad Pro it would be an easy decision but sadly they don’t.

Boring with a capital B. I see why the iMac videos were released first. And this is coming from someone who actually bought the new iPad. I knew what I was buying, so the whole iPad OS limitation thing really never came into consideration. The same should apply to anyone buying an iPad. Don’t expect it to compete with a Mac, because it’s never will. Its in its own category. Hopefully WWDC will spice things up, but I’m not holding my breath. As of right now it serves its intended purpose for me as a secondary device just fine.

I'm sure the screen is amazing...

But am I the only one who prefers watching movies on their 65" living room TV?
This. Perhaps if I were a digital nomad or always on the go I would definitely jump on this. But I'll wait until the software catches up to the hardware.

I'd get a superior experience with my surround sound in my living room. Especially with the price the iPad is currently.

Waiting to see what is shown at WWDC..thats why Im holding off on buying the iPad..I will buy it regardless since I want to upgrade from my 2018 model but still I want to see what will be shown

Totally understand - I’ve got my old 15” rMBP on my desk still, more as a way of making multitasking that much easier, and would love to upgrade to a new M1X 16”, but I can’t justify spending the money, knowing I would still spend most of my time on the iPad Pro. If Apple updates iPadOS so that you can use an external screen as more than a mirror of the iPP’s screen, I’ll definitely do that for my in-office work.

MacBook Pro 13 w/16GB memory and 1TB SSD = $1899.
iPad Pro 12.9 w/16GB memory, 1TB SSD and Magic Keyboard= $2148.

Which one is more functional and why? As exciting as a 16GB/1TB iPad Pro would be, dropping more coin than a full-fledged MBP is a hard thing to do for me.
Depends on what functions you need. For me, the iPP is more functional (I handwrite on an online whiteboard all day long). The whole Mac comparison is just a nonstarter.

Interesting that we have so many hardware rumors and leaks and yet, when it comes to iPad OS 15…very little.
Definitely hoping that the lack of rumors means they’ve simply been able to keep info on iPadOS from leaking. Would love to see them really unlock the potential of the M1 iPad Pros…since I’m getting one in a few days. I’m certainly ok with their doing incremental improvements and additions - I made it through a year of using my current 2018 12.9” with no trackpad support. But there has to be multiple things they can do to better utilize the power of the M1.

I think we are going to see full blown adobe apps on the iPad pro come WWDC. I have the M1 Mac Mini and Adobe cranked out M1 support for Photoshop and released it to the public in a few months and now they have illustrator in beta which works great. Hardware wise there is nothing different between the M1 macs and the iPads so just a tweaking of the code to allow it to run on iPad OS and it should be up and going.

I also predict Apple is going to launch something for devs so if they develop for the M1 back they can just push a button and it will covert it to run on iPad OS as well almost like how Unity works.

iPadOS should feature some apps in smaller, movable windows, like the weather and calculator app. Taking from the design of a desktop.

The impressive screen is what I’m after. I’m spoiled by my lg oled tv and the iPhones display. Looks like the upgrade will be worth it.

Unless you're viewing HDR content or maxing out brightness constantly, mini led display is nowhere near as good as oled, very disappointed by these display reviews, guess the wait continues for a oled iPad.

It will be interesting to hear if the original Magic Keyboard works on the new 12.9. Has anyone seen anything on this yet? UPDATE: According to this video, it fits perfectly. So what was the issue that Apple said it was not compatible?
It wasn't Apple. Some blog (France I believe) made the claim. After it went viral Apple had say something. They were kind of screwed too. The previous version Magic Keyboard works fine if a little tight. If they flat our refuted the blog post people would be gunning for them. And anyone with any stickers screen savers may run into problems and go off on Apple. So they say what they could - it will function perfectly and the fit may not be perfect due to the extra 1/2 mm of thickness.

Didn’t Adobe promise that was right around the corner back in 2018 or something?

iPadOS needs to be it’s own thing since they aren’t planning on merging the iPad Pro and the Mac. iPadOS is a phone operating system that is very much unchanged. It needs to be redone from the ground up.
It needs to have the openness of MacOS is the main problem, and Apple doesnt want to give up App Store profits

What's up with the "mmwave 5G will provide broadband-like speeds". Where is LTE not already broadband speed?

Most people (unfortunately) don't have access to gigabit home internet. Where I live in rural Missouri, I see 200-300mbps on LTE.

This would just, never happen. But something like Motorola had with the Atrix.

Sure, iPad OS when it's an iPad makes tons of sense. But let me plug it in to a dock via the thunderbolt connector, and give me full macOS. Or, give me full macOS whenever it's connected to a keyboard and mouse. That would just be incredible. Apple is more than capable of finding ways to make that work.

False. It is empowered by the simplicity of iOS.
Give it a desktop OS and people will complain it’s not a tablet any longer.

Apple knows better than these reviewers making controversial statements for click revenue.

I somewhat agree. I want powerful software on this device (desktop class) but I still want it to be iOS fundamentally speaking.

When iPadOS can make CIFS/NFS file-level shares and iSCSI block-level mounts ‘first class’ citizens for multi-terabyte storage access (Final Cut, ProRAW files takes up most of that,) instead of shares being relegated to an insignificant Files.app, then it will (was, gave it to grandparents) continue to be a shiny Wacom, email and video machine.

For many prosumers, iPadOS may be enough. Not denying that. But personally, for me, it’s not even close to being viable for work.
