I don't and will not care at all about any iPad hardware rumors or actual product releases until iPad OS is vastly enhanced. If people find it sufficient, great; for me, it continues to be a heavily crippled OS.
I agree with you, but would the iPad have cooling problems if it ran Mac OS? I could see Apple not running a full OS just to prevent "thermal tactile distress" (my attempt at Apple jargon). But of course the real reason is ithat OS is a cash cow.

This is a top tier comment. I mean I like my m2 but it is so clunky sometimes to use. Apple needs to bite the bullet and just let users run macOS or macOS lite. Freeform window management, a more functional dock, etc.

Stage manager has failed. The hardware is already powerful enough to run macOS so why do they give us this weird window manager?

Too bad window managers aren't apps that developers could submit to the app store or host on their alternative app stores, so if Apple doesn't want to do it, then let developers do it.
I can understand that Stage Manager might seem a weird window manager. But then I don’t understand how you can suggest using macOS, which is totally unadapted to the iPad form factor and would be 100x weirder.

When will apple bite the damn bullet and let us run macOS or macOS lite from the iPad? That would be a killer feature!
You would think that they would look at the Surface and realize it could be more of a benefit for sales than a matter of cannibalizing sales.

Look like it dropped quite a bit in the last year and pretty stagnant. It was almost 10 billion and now its more like 6 for the last 4 quarters.
The iPad is not thriving as Apple expected when it was introduced. But it’s not because it’s missing “PC features”, but because the phone has evolved much faster than expected. The Mac evolution is much more concerning than the iPad. I just think iPad and iPadOS is the main preference of the majority of the market as an alternative to the phone, and the Mac is left to niche users — this is something that needs to be accepted. Cars and trucks.

iPad. Now with 29-degrees of haze! For those who just can’t stand to see their own reflection.

The would look at the Surface - and they would realise that the iPad is doing much better than any classic tablet PC. It’s not about cannibalization: I think it’s pretty clear that an iPad with macOS would do much worse than an iPad with iPadOS.

Yay for matte display and blue light filtering. Hope it doesn't have PWM or temporal dithering.

A matte screen protector is different than etched glass, but I don't experience any of those issues on the touchscreen devices that I've applied a matte protector to.
This is directly speaking to Apples “nano” coating and the constant jokes about the need for a special cleaning cloth here at MR.

Anyone else read this and wondered if this was just another 'sting' by Apple's anti-leak SWAT team to catch out any individuals in Apple or their supply chain that leak stuff?

Another thing they could do is, when the iPad is docked and plugged into a keyboard, mouse, allow the mac-like interface. And when it is undocked and just being used like a tablet, then users would use the tablet interface. Idk. Just give us something that is better than stage manager.
I think this is ultimately the route they'll go if they ever do anything even close to combining the Mac and the iPad. And honestly it would be the most likely outcome not only to still keep some separation of powers within the company as you mentioned, but also it would be a major driver of more accessories and services revenue which as we all know, Apple absolutely loves. If your iPad has to be docked in order to be used as a Mac, then get ready for Apple's first ever Thunderbolt dock coming in at the low low price of $349 that nets them 80% profit per unit sold. Plus I'm sure they'd see an uptick in their already-existing lineup of external display offerings. And if you're getting a MacPad then chances are you already have an iPhone as well and maybe another more powerful Mac at home or work. Better up that iCloud storage to keep your stuff all working smoothly together!

Yeah, that has to be in the pipeline to be announced sometime in the near future. It just makes too much sense in so many ways.

Apple doesnt see macOS as the future. VisionOS seems like a great place to have established the opposite, but they chose to base it on iPadOS/iOS and not macOS.
This is an excellent point. Perhaps they were cluing us in to their future plans when they announced visionOS? This would seem even more apparent when it comes to the fact that 2023 was the first full calendar year since the iPad was first released in 2010 that saw Apple completely neglect the product line in terms of hardware. That's a pretty significant lack of attention on their part for a such a core product. That's almost as bad as going a whole year without any update to any of the iPhone or Apple Watch models.

As a graphic artist I have to say that your comment is a little short sighted. A mat screen is exactly what designers want. Shiny reflective screens are not optimal for design work. The potential issue is how Apple handles the mating. If they can reduce the amount of finger prints it collects they’ll be offering exactly what many of us want: an iPad screen that’s more like a piece of paper and less like a consumer monitor. And to add to that, there are already many mat screen protector options, mostly aimed at artists and designers using the device as a drawing surface.

This would be amazing as someone who always puts an anti-glare protector on mine. Can't stand glare. Even if this is extra I would gladly pay to not have to deal with bubbles on a crappy screen protector.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has an amazing anti-reflection coating. The iPads should just use that instead of going matte unless it's intended to provide a paper-like feel.

Except what does it do to the color accuracy and dynamic range of the screen?

A great Rumor for a would be popular feature just prior to an update. Sure this means we'll either get it in two years or never.
