That all makes sense but still seems very anti-consumer. They should at least unlock the additional 4GB of RAM now or at some point in the future.
There is a lot of negative sentiment around companies who artificially lock hardware down, who unlock that additional feature through an additional payment or subscription. I don’t think Apple wants to be “that company,” yet.

Either the 4GB is hardware locked (not reversible), or they planned on possibly unlocking it as a planned subscription upgrade to future AI tools (Apple Intelligence+).

Hey, great, now the two people in the world for whom the M4 iPad isn’t powerful enough can finally upgrade.

Apple: “Hmm, how can we make the M5 iPad stand out from the M4, so that M4 owners feel forced to upgrade to the newest version even if they don’t actually need it? Oh, I know, let’s just remove the ‘iPad Pro’ text from the back! That way, everyone will instantly know if someone has the old M4 model. Genius idea!”

How many people are already coming up with excuses for themselves about why they “need” this new M5 version?

how dare you suggest that Apple didn't pour millions into this giant leap from 4 to 5 and just faffed about for a year!

and whatever excuses there are, they'll become irrelevant as soon as Apple wheels out another 35% extra, it's like microdosing a captive horde of addicts, drip drip - kerching - drip drip - kerching..

Yes indeed… a small step for the user, a giant leap in revenue for Apple.
