What's even crazier, is how thin these iPads are and packed with the latest technology. Who would of thought 20 years ago we would be carrying a device that just over a pound and is less than an inch thick that can accomplish so Many things on different levels that a desktop can. To me, that's mind boggling and Apple is the leader Behind this technology.

I did. but nobody believed me! They said I watched too much Star Trek :p

I think I'm good with my iPP 10.5 for the next 3 years. Yes I say this every year when I upgrade my iPad, but with the ultra smooth 120Hz display and the super fast processor, as well as 256GB storage, there's really nothing left that I would want in my iPad. But of course Apple is quite good at coming up with stuff you didn't know you wanted, such as the 120hz display which was quite a surprise.

The new 10nm process might explain the excellent battery life I'm getting, ~12hrs easily just media consumption. The 9.7 Pro I struggled to get 9-10. I definitely thought battery life was worse than the Air 2 when I got the iPP 9.7 last year.

Yes nothing left wanting. Until next year :p
Just upgraded from an iPM4 to a 10" iPP yesterday, and DANG, what a difference! The iPP is massive compared to what I was used to, but it's so fast, and the screen is so smooth (thanks to the refresh rate) that I spent 4 hours straight sketching. Whew! So far, so good!

This thing freakin screams. The new iPad Pro is insanely fast and smooth. Can't wait to see this processor on the new phones.
Hella. It's so fast!

If that was the goal all along why didn't they start with macOS and add touch? I don't disagree with you, but it appears they have different intentions.

baby steps. i mean look at what they're doing now with the ipad. way more desktop like.

Why? Because they can. And making a device that beats the Microsoft surface with higher performance and lower latency by a teeny bit more is worth it.

I think this is more about testing the results of the 10nm process before putting it into the iPhone 8... at least that's what I'm hoping.

To truly differentiate the iPhone 8 from its iPhone 7S litter mates, it's going to take more than just a prettier face and a few new features. If the iPhone 8 is to the iPhone 7S as an iPad Pro is to an iPad, it will truly be worthy of a device commemorating the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

When did specs matter? It's about the experience. So, it will finally get software access to the overdue HEVC hardware decoder later this year but how about VP9? 10nm is old news anyway. Looking forward to 7nm in 2018.

Haha so eventually they will say "Ahh damnit" and just blend the two, meanwhile stealing tips and tricks from how Windows got Windows 10 to work on a touch screen.

I don't have an iPad anymore, but I at least appreciate their crack at adding a filesystem to it. That was one of the things that killed it for me.

I hear what everyone is saying about switching Macs to custom A-chips.
But moving away from Intel likely means losing Windows compatibility (bootcamp).
Not important for most, but surely some corporate enterprises love the ability to run both platforms.

That's good, that way the A11 won't make the A10X seem older than it really is.
I think this was part of the reasoning. The A10X also has an extra pair of cores and GPU pipelines compared to A10. It makes sense for Apple to do this. There's no rush on iPad releases as they're kind of sporadic already, so they didn't lose anything if it takes longer to refine. iPads also have smaller orders, again allowing TSMC time to get up to speed.
So now we know Apple is geared up and ready for A11 to churn them out at full speed!

Yeah but what real use is an ipad i have everything but an ipad i toke back the 10.5 one, all the screens are yellow tint and they just open apps like an iphone u can downloads files etc like a mac so its just an iphone with big screen

That yellow tint is true tone, which can be turned off in settings.

Not necessarily judging by the magic accomplished by Microsoft and Qualcomm. The bigger hurdle now is the legal threat from Intel since it will take away a big chunk of their market.

If the 10nm process has legs through at least three generations, we may see increased die size and features in subsequent generations. That would be fine, especially with more integrated graphics and stacked memory going forward. The device is already as thin as structure allows, so perhaps Apple engineers will emphasise heat dissipation and sound quality and antenna design going forward. Heck, bigger and better batteries wouldn't be all bad either.

And I for one am glad my iPad is nothing at all like a Mac.
I'm not. I want an iPad that is as powerful as a laptop (which it already is) to be able to do EVERYTHING that a laptop can do, including peripherals, multiple displays and more. I suspect once we get USBC and Thunderbolt 3 ports nothing will be left to divide the two.

I don't really get the logic behind your statement, I always want more from my devices and you should too!

Apple's A-chip development prowess over the years is simply astonishing. On many fronts. And has paid huge dividends.

Tip-of-my-hat to Johny Srouji, his engineers, and Apple's leadership that have made their development, and the products using those chips, possible.

I'm interested to see that we have a 3-core chip back. I thought the A8X was the beginning and end of that line.

The 10X has more Cache than all the Flash, RAM and ROM memory combined in the systems I program for avionics flight controls.

Getting a higher display refresh rate may have some value, but besdies that I don't see why I would need a more powerful processor.

My iPad from 2011 works fine, only problem was that it didn't support the latest iOS so I had to upgrade.

:D

Apparently a water molecule is 0.275nm.

There should be plenty of room below 5nm.

:D

the biggest problem right now going sub 10nm isn't creating the smaller process, it's the conductivity of Silicon at those gate sizes are too small, so that even when gates are "closed", some electronics can still cross the < 10nm gate and cause incorrect states / calculations

I believe intel has stated that 10nm is likely their last CPU to use pure silicon and they'd have to find some better materials for future processes.

Ipad is still just a big iphone it will never be a mac or close so its just for apps and fun, and ios 11 isnt amazing just more multitasking that you wouldnt use, i wish the ipad had more pro software
You have a Mac already, and you have an iPhone already. Why would you want two Macs doing the same thing? You want to use Mac to do Mac stuff like programming for example and iPad to do tablet things. Just have both with you, and you can have the best of both worlds.

BTW get the 12.9 inch one, so that it is the size of a magazine. Get an iPhone 8 and a MacBook Pro 15. You will be set, problems solved.
