If anything, it would tend to undercount the iPad. Cause there are about 200,000 other things you can do with an iPad; versus about ten with most Android tablets.

Sorry - but that's just - for lack of better word - crap. Name a few things - legitimate things that the iPad can do that an Android tablet can't. Speaking in hyperbole or with disgust for competition doesn't do much for your arguments nor does it make your posts more worthy of reading. In fact - it diminishes it.

What we can "really say" is that the iPad is the King of tablets and will be for a very very long time.

Not really, The Kindle Fire will soon be outselling the lolpad and Androids marketshare is around the 40% mark. Like the phones Android will be king. We have said it before, nothing can stop Android.

Many of the counrtries it launched in (US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK) have less than one tenth the population of the USA.

Well, not less than one tenth, but regardless of their GDP, USA is a huge market, not even comparable to the rest of the G8 when it comes to consuming.

US population: 313,212,000
Australian population: 22,863,084
(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population)

That's 7.3%—well under 'one tenth'. Yep, we're barely a blip on Apple's monetary radar, but we're among the first countries for most product launches, and seem to get a disproportionate number of mentions in Apple keynotes, all of which makes us feel the love. :)

Can we really say they sold 3 million in 4 days (as impressive as the numbers still are no matter how you look at it) when a lot of people just ordered it up on the website a week prior to the official friday launch ?

Seems to me those days should also be counted. Unless 3 million only refers to actual in-store purchases at Apple and other retail outlets, something the press release does not state.

It's pretty standard to count pre-orders like that, isn't it?

The "...in X days..." bit is always counted from the day the item begins shipping/is stocked in stores, rather than from the day the company starts accepting pre-orders.

I guess the best question to ask is why is it when Apple releases any numbers, everyone has to discuss the veracity of the numbers hehe. It's like people think Apple is lying and they're really not that successful, or they don't have 100B in cash :D

Let's say that the 3M does mean shipped. Those 3M are going to be sold. Everyone here knows it. So why does this become a big deal?

You can go back over the past several years of posts on this site, and you'll see that the same people arguing about this also vehemently said the iPhone and iPad were inevitably going to flop, so it's just more of the same. I do wonder if they get paid to post, or if they just think it's fun. :)

Or they're just plain stupid, but I really think they just get a kick out of it! They're getting attention and that's what they are after! Probably even posting from iPads, they just don't have any other method for attention other then being *******s:cool:!

I have no doubt about it. I've seen it on other Apple related sites too hehe. It's hilarious that they literally spend their entire day trolling! :D

I'm just amazed that even with the high demand for the iPad 3, you can still walk into a Bestbuy/Target/etc and pick one up. Glad to see Apple beefed up production this time around so they wouldn't have the issues they did with the availability of the iPad 2.

You didn't hear? The Note commercial was actually a call to arms for Apple. We can thank Samsung for the lack of lines hehe :D

I guess we can finally put that old "these things only sell because of Steve's RDF" myth to bed.

Sorry, but Apple has grown to such a mythical stature and presence that the RDF stopped being Steve's looong ago.

As long as they keep cranking out great, blockbuster products year after year, the RDF will still be in full force.

If the RDF depends on great, blockbuster products year after year, then maybe it is not a RDF after all ;P

The main thing, which defines user experience on a tablet IMHO: to run smoothly. Android still has some way to go.

And yes, I am an Android user myself. ;)

The OP said there are 200,000 things the iPad can do which an Android Tablet can't. Obviously hyperbole. It's simply not true. UI had nothing to do with his statement.

But I see some would rather downvote my comment rather than offer up any actual things that the iPad can do that an Android tablet can't. I'm not defending Android tablets. I don't own one (I own an original iPad). I just think that it's ridiculous for someone to make statements like that AND wanting to be taken seriously.

Are people able to just walk into a store and pick one up still? How's the supply look?

Depending on your area, yes. When iPad 2 came out, I couldn't find any retailer that had it for months. Checked constantly but no one every had one, not even the Apple stores. Wasn't until about 4-5 months after launch did I start seeing them on the shelves.

With the iPad 3, I've been into numerous Targets, Walmarts, Bestbuys, etc and I'm amazed at the fact they have numerous units on hand ready to purchase.

I can't believe people still argue about Android not being third rate. I have heard many stories like yours from other Android users. It is truly inferior technology to the iPad yet folks still attempt to dispute that. Hmmm, can anyone post pics of folks lining up by the masses to buy an Android tablet?

Oh well, perhaps the iPad haters can chew on this:

You're a broken record. Please let me know when you can come up with a list of things the iPad can do that an Android tablet can't. I'm not talking about what it can do better (which is subjective) I am asking what the iPad can DO than an Android Tablet CAN'T. Thanks.

Yes, I know my answer was a bit out of context and of course the OP was exaggerating a bit. But why getting so worked up about this? :)

Besides UI issues which I mentioned above, for example, I don't have use for a Android Tablet in the Cockpit, because of lack of required software. Just a niche maybe, but an example nevertheless.

They were probably trying to suggest something about the additional number of apps (because what a tablet “does” is so driven by the app market).

I will say I do agree with you about functionality - if you abstract a tablets capabilities, and even the apps into high level categories, an iOS tablet and Android tablet provide roughly the same functions, in roughly the same way.

However, the devil is in the details. Android up till recently has felt like a “tuner car” - there’s some decent components, and the individual parts might be better, but the sum of the whole doesn’t feel connected and seamless like just walking in to the Porsche dealer and buying a GT3.

It can run iPhoto, Garage Band, iMovie, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Omnifocus, iThoughts, and thousands of other extremely well done tablet apps that Android can't.

And incidentally that's probably the single most important thing to most tablet owners.

Yup.

What Devs Say About iPad (but not Android tablets)
http://gigaom.com/mobile/what-devs-say-about-ipad-but-not-android-tablets/

"Even now, however, Android tablet apps are taking a backseat to those for the iPad. It’s very rare that an app first appears on Android devices over those running iOS. And that gives Apple a competitive advantage in this market: Consumers in the know won’t want to invest in the devices that get software titles second (if at all), but will buy the hardware that has the best supporting software and ecosystem. If you don’t believe that, just ask a mobile app developer."
