I could see Apple calling it "HD". If they called it iPad 3, and considering that they are probably going to keep iPad 2 around, they don't want to imply that iPad 2 is "old", as a 2/3 designation would indicate. But 2/HD makes the iPad 2 seem just "different". Definitely marketing dorks at work here :D

Too bad "HD" is already officially reserved for the resolution of 1280×720 pixels or 1920×1080 pixels. So the iPad already has an "HD" display, and if they increase that resolution, it would not make sense to call it "HD" since it will be well beyond HD.

Once you've watched enough Apple keynotes, you'll learn how they spin these kinds of discrepancies into opportunities to look like they are absolutely destroying the competition (which they will).

"So, let's talk about the term 'HD'. We know that it is defined by displays that can produce resolutions of 1280x720 or 1920x1080, and that the vertical pixel count is where the terms '720' and '1080' come from in TV marketing. We thought deeply about this and realized that we could do better.

After several years of hard work by some of the most talented people in the world at Apple, we are introducing our latest device that features a 2048x1536 resolution, or '1536p'. We think we are being generous with that branding since it could be '2048p' when in portrait mode. This is 46% more pixels than you've ever seen before, and we call it...iPad HD."

*thunderous applause, blogosphere implosion, hilarity ensues outside of Apple retail locations worldwide*

Won't the 16gb "retina" iPad kind of be the equivalent of an 8gb iPad in real storage terms due to the increased file sizes for all the retina supported graphics and HD video/photos ?

I would have thought with the move to retina, the move to 32gb as entry, with 64 and 128gb being the upgrades options.

Apples always seem to only "half support" any given feature they are pushing, so this time they are pushing retina display, but you'll only have the storage space to install two apps and 1 HD video lol.

It's like owning a brand new Lamborghini , only to find out its a Volkswagen Beatle under the shell, pretty, but actually kind of useless.

3 is unlucky in Asian countries... Thus no 3. Pure and simple. There was never a Palm 3 either, just the 4.

Actually 4 is the unlucky number, usually related to death.. 3 is only unlucky if that's the number of legs you have and your a dog.

Are you kidding? This is going to be a MUCH bigger upgrade than iPad -> iPad 2 was. In fact, I'd even say it's shaping up to be the biggest iOS device upgrade ever.

-Retina display
-LTE
-New processor
-Siri
-New case (okay, it's just a little thicker, but it's still new :p)
-Better cameras (?)
-More RAM (?)
-Bluetooth 4.0
-More storage (?)

And to think the only differences between the iPhone 4 and 4s were the processor, cameras, and Siri.

Between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, you are forgetting:
- More storage (64 GB model)
- Upgraded antenna
- Bluetooth 4.0

I think we just have to ask ourselves, "What would Steve do?":(

If you look at Steve's memorial services, Tim actually quotes Steve and says: "Don't do as I do, run the company as you see fit."
Steve had also said that when Walt Disney died, people were like "What would Walt do?" and that was a tough period for Disney because they came up with nothing in that period.

Several months ago, the rumors were that the "retina" version of the iPad would be called "iPad Pro" and that it would be sold in addition to the current iPad line which will keep the current resolution.

Anyway, I still don't get it that an expensive good-for-nothing device receives so much interest. It seems that people no longer need more than Facebook and Angry Birds.

Please take the time to seriously answer this question:

Why are you posting on this forum? You seem to dislike everything that Apple does, or you simply try to troll and get people (like myself) annoyed.

If you would have the courtesy to answer, that would be appreciated on my behalf. :)

Most of the times it used to be on Tuesdays, right?

I dont care what it's called. Give me the hires, quad processor, and hopefully the theorized feeling of texture. Oh yeah, and a stylus too! Writing with a finger is stupid.

Tactile feedback .. some people have suggested that Tactile feedback is what Apple mean with .. "and Touch"

There are likely many factors, but one of the most important is the news cycle. Apple has learned over the years which days are best to announce a product to take advantage of the natural flow of news so that their message is disseminated as widely and deeply as possible.

HD Vision Glasses

When I see a product with HD in it's name I always think of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKYKyIObXyM

Does Apple really want to be associated with these kind of products?
I bet this is just a fake leak by Apple, just so that the name "iPad 3" will be in more headlines.

I'll bet that the product on the invite is actually the new TV from Apple.. and not an iPad at all, we'll all be blown away.

Any name they choose will be praised by some people, criticised by others.
Eventually, people will get used to it and we will all wonder why this discussion ever took place :)

I don't think you'll buy it based on the name, those decided have already promised Apple their money so just sit back and see what they come out with.

Hmm... funny how people are talking about it being called iPad this or iPad that.

Two years ago, people were making childish feminine product jokes about that name.

It doesn't matter what it is called, it will be the tablet that smokes the competition, AGAIN!

The competition will repeat the words of Jim Allchin of Microsoft when he emailed Bill Gates and other MS colleagues on learning of the launch of iTunes, "We were smoked."

I think Apple are going to revisit the past to name their future iPad. There is a rich history of Apple product designations going back to the '70s, so plenty of choice.

My sources tell me it will almost certainly be called the:

iPad G3 Mini Quadra III Plus Touch Titanium AV 36th Anniversary (HD)
