I'm kind of leaning towards an iPad 2HD now as being a viable name, which would kind of fit with it being more evolutionary than revolutionary, i.e. similar form factor, processor being a revision of the previous one rather than a new quad-core, etc.

But then I don't know any more than the rest of you, so I'm guessing.

My MacBook Pro is a MacBookPro8,1, according to system info. It says MacBook Pro on it, in the same way that the iPad 2 I have just says iPad and the iPhone 4S I have just says iPhone.

In other words, the branding on the product never reflects the revision or version number, so I wouldn't read too much into the leaked parts not have the intended product name printed on them.

The difference is that they are not advertising Macbook Pros as "Macbook Pro 8".

But they very much call the iPad an iPad 2, or the iPhone, iPhone 4S, etc...

That's a fair point. But it doesn't change the fact the version number isn't printed on anything Apple sell, other than in the marketing info.

hmmm starting to wonder if the iPad 2 will remain at its current price point and continue to be sold and this iPad 3/HD will be offered as a more expensive premium product.

Apple sells 720p as HD ;)
I hope this does not relate to the new iPad (3, hopefully)
(Counting down in my head ...)

720p is an HD format. Why shouldn't they call it what it is?

They could call it just 'iPad'. And then early and late 2012 like they do with macs

I was hoping that it would follow the iPhone naming convention....

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
etc

iPad
iPad 2
iPad 4G (with LTE/"Retina"/A5X (quad-core A5))
iPad 4GS (same as 4G with new Cortex A15 based SoC(A6))
iPad 5
etc

but I guess that would just make too much sense.

But Apple already designates "HD" for iPhone apps modified for iPad.

This wouldn't bode well for continuity's sake.

Several months ago, the rumors were that the "retina" version of the iPad would be called "iPad Pro" and that it would be sold in addition to the current iPad line which will keep the current resolution.

Anyway, I still don't get it that an expensive good-for-nothing device receives so much interest. It seems that people no longer need more than Facebook and Angry Birds.

Please open your eyes and see that there are plenty of cases where people use iPads professionally, all over the world.

Haters gonna hate I guess...

Whatever it's called I'm in for two to replace my 1st gen and the wife's 2nd gen.

I doubt they'd get away from some sort of model-specific naming scheme. iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad HD all refer to a model in the present or past. To call every iPad or iPhone simply "iPad" or "iPhone" would subject them to being referred to by their specs, like the "Macbook Pro 2.4GHz". Apple doesn't want to focus on specs.

Maybe they call it "iPad HD" to emphasize the higher resolution, because they can't change their definition of "Retina Display" (300+ ppi) with every new device that gets an resolution upgrade.

Yes, that's one more reason to _not_ have it anywhere, even in Marketing info, Stores, etc...

But there's no doubt, they will continue to have some version 2,1 or 3,1, etc... in the system info as reference. But there's no need to advert as "iPad 3" or "iPhone 5/6"...

Now, it's worldwide famous enough to be adverted as "the brand new iPhone" or "the new iPad"... without referring to any number info.

That way, you don't have to deal disruptive numbers with a potential iPhone 4G, iPhone 5 or iPhone 6, that will actually will be the iPhone 6th Generation, etc...

Well, that's my thoughts :)

If you look how Apple is referring to the version of MacBookPro, it's more about "Late 2008", "2009", "Late 2011", etc...

So, I wouldn't be surprise to have an "iPhone" and "iPad" Apple would mention and refer by "Late 2011", "2012", etc...

They surely don't want to focus on specs, but they can focus on Year instead. The only specs would be the size: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB :)

I truly hate when company's put HD on something as a marketing gimmick.

I'm pretty sure IPads have had "HD" displays since the first one.

From dictionary.com:
gim·mick
   [gim-ik] Show IPA
noun
1.an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, especially one designed to attract attention or increase appeal.

2.a concealed, usually devious aspect or feature of something, as a plan or deal: An offer that good must have a gimmick in it somewhere.

3.a hidden mechanical device by which a magician works a trick or a gambler controls a game of chance.

They won't name it after 4G if they are still offering a wifi-only model.

I think many of you guys are putting too much thought into this. The name is only used for marketing. The iPad 2 just says iPad everywhere except the website. It's just iPad on the box.

Apple will pick the simplest term that tells the marketing story that they want to tell. I can see it being HD or 3, I used to think PRO, but i don't think they want to scare off any "casual" users who might assume a PRO is over their heads.

Remember Apple is not interested to tailoring a message to the people on this board, they are aiming for your much less tech savoy mothers.

And as far as the "S" goes, think about why Apple used that for the phones they did. They were for phones that looked identical to the previous models. It was the simplest way to say, "yes this looks the same, all the upgrades are under the hood"

The screen on this thing alone makes an "S" moot.
