Puzzled by "still being in the "planning" phase."
I have to assume this is production planning vs design and engineering.

Yeah, I've already done the ebay photo shoot for my Mini 4. As soon as we have solid intelligence on a Mini "Pro" I'll know the auction date!

That's what I get for trying to be a smartass today. :D

ARM based windows tablets will be out in late 2017

Coming from a guy that hates windows and thinks its ****....

.... those windows tablets will have the same battery and thinness as the ipad. They will support usb-c and/or thunderbolt 3, they will do infinitely more than an ipad

and so its finally possible that after all these years microsoft has managed to un **** themselves and actually make something that is better than an ipad

Ive found out it was going to have a port and a button, so he kicked it back to R&D to get those removed.

What's wrong with the current one? I think it's better to type on than the new MBP keyboard.
That's a very low standard. Pretty much everything is better to type on than the new MBP keyboard…

Just call them the iPad mini, iPad, and the iPad plus.
There's nothing "mini" about a 9.7" device.

That said, I would like to see an update to the actual iPad mini. I like that size.

Technically, Microsoft already released an ARM-based Windows tablet back in 2012... The Surface RT. Of course Microsoft wants everyone to forget that they released 2 generations of that tablet.

I was and still am a fan of the Windows RT-based Surface devices. I still own and use a Surface 2. In many respects my Surface 2 is more "Pro" than my 12.9 iPad Pro. They won't release another ARM-based Windows update for it, but if they did, it would be quite nice.

I wonder what they mean by ’friendly price range’ for the 9.7 inch model. Perhaps starting at 499$, like iPads used to?

This is disappointing for me individually. I have a 3rd-gen iPad from 2012 which worked just great up until iOS 10. It's pretty dang slow now, frustratingly so. Instead of purchasing a device that had been out for six months, I figured I'd wait it out for another six and pick up a new one that I assumed would be introduced this March. I guess I'll wait until March just to be sure and if no new iPads are released then I'll evaluate whether I want to go ahead and upgrade or wait some more. -shrug-

I didn't realise the iPad 3 could run iOS 10

I don't count the Surface 2 because of how microsoft abandoned it. Very sad to see that happen as it had such potential.

Now though, Microsoft has full windows 10 running on ARMv8, and they have an x86 translation layer identical to how rosetta worked for PPC on x86 Macs. So This time around the successor to the Surface 2 will not only sport full Windows with non of the restrictions microsoft clamped on us before, but it will also run any win32 binary as well!

They're coming out in late 2017 according to the press video Microsoft did with the demo of this ^

What about a 7.9" "Pro" with a high contrast display?

WTF is wrong with this company?
[doublepost=1484846107][/doublepost]

That's not why they're waiting. The problem is that sales of current iPads haven't dropped low enough to warrant introduction of new models. This is an accounting decision, not an engineering decision. None of the top Apple execs cares a whit about making the best tablets, they just want to sell the most profitable tablets. It works great short term, but long term it's a path to a ruined reputation.
Glad to know you sit on the board and know what every executive at Apple knows.

Smh the absurdity of some people who have an unbacked opinion and spew it as truth.

A guess would be that the edge to edge without home button, would launch after it's being introduced in their iPhone 8, so the iPhone will take the glory, since it's their bestseller.

If they launch it first in the iPad product line, it would be old business when it comes to iPhone.

Why are so many people obsessed with the concept of an edge-to-edge screen?

This is something I DON'T want. You have to hold the device; with an edge-to-edge screen your fingers will almost always be blocking the screen or accidentally doing touch inputs. The border is just the right size on the current iPads and iPhones, and doesn't need to be smaller!

I think this is a false rumor. I doubt Apple would release a low end 9.7" ipad in March and wait until the fall to release the new pro models. I have a feeling there might be some constraints on supply...but that all three ipads(and the updated pencil) will be announced in March. Mark this post.

People also don't buy a new one as often as a new phone.

True, but most companies keep their products up to date as technology evolves and then whenever a customer feels like buying, they're getting the latest tech.

For example, I'm not replacing my GTX970 video card any time soon because it does everything i want and it's fine for me, but if I were buying a new computer now, there's no way I'd buy a GTX970. I'd want a GTX1070 and anything older would be a deal breaker. Even though the 970 is fine.

I guess poor little Apple can't afford to keep everything up to date.

Apple is sending some really mixed messages about Macs and iPads and which one people really need right now. The iPad is still just a toy until they lighten up on what they allow one to do.

They should make a Mac that has the lower half of my rmb for the brains and make it interchangeable with an array of iPads for the screen. So you choose your screen and chassis separately. When one breaks or is out of date you swap it out separately.

So you get a device with interchangeable pieces that has all the benefits of IOS and OS X. Not sure how to differentiate it from the MS offerings. I guess am suggesting a headless laptop with the option to buy whatever screen and it can be docked or connected via wifi or bluetooth or whatever you need.

So I guess if they can shrink the iPad as much as they can it would become closer to this. Instead of the current smart keyboard use the lower half of a rmb 12 and let them pair easily. Either half can be replaced as needed.
[doublepost=1484842426][/doublepost]So when the iPad is paired to the rmb it would run OS X and when you detach the "iPad" or screen it would run IOS. One of the things people say about touchscreens is they aren't very good tablets on their own. This idea could fix that. You have heavy computing power when they are paired and the best tablet on the market when they are separated.

It's so obvious to do this and Surface will do it before them.

We need this macPad Pro. 32GB please and a slide in SD card or thumb drive slide in slot.

Revolutionary and earth shattering.

I'd buy that (First time I'd buy a NEW Apple product in a long time)

LOL Don't feel so bad. There are some key combos that I'm still discovering... nearly 1 year later. :D

I've learned that pressing and holding down the command key within an app will display a pop-up menu showing all of the available hot-key combinations for that app.

That's a good tip! Thank you again. I currently am set up with an iMac at home, a MacBook for remote and iPad for wherever, but the next iteration of iPads, I'm seriously considering ditching the MacBook. Most of what I do when away from my office is writing, and so an iPad would fit the bill, I think. It's just working out these little eccentricities that a decade of Mac use has drilled into me.

Considering that Apple got rid of the SD slot on all their MacBook pros, I seriously doubt they'd ever put one in the ipad. Besides, they make too much money on the SD card cables. Ain't gonna happen. The iPad has become a laptop replacement for some. But it will take a lot longer for it to become one for everyone. That's just the way it is. As a creative person, I still need a Mac at home to edit heavy 4k video, but I do plan to buy a new iPad pro when they are announced to replace my aging laptop. There are so many things I can do on an iPad pro now. Sketch with the apple pencil, edit movies and photos while traveling, update my blog etc etc. The technology is improving tremendously, and will keep improving.

Seems very odd to me for there to be a 9.7 inch and a 10.5 inch.

Not necessarily. 10.5 would perhaps allow for the display to be different in terms of reduced bezels or edge to edge. The approximate inch may be all Apple needs to change the display enough for various improvements, not necessarily for a larger viewing experience. There is more going on here than just a slight increase in screen size.

The question is...if the new 10.5" bezel-less ipad sells well...will Apple get rid of the bezels on the 12.9" and 9.7" too? Will the 9.7" bezel-less become the new mini? Will they keep making the 12.9"? Makes you wonder. Cause having just one model size without bezels would be kind of odd. You'd think Apple would want the entire line to be uniform. Perhaps Apple is just testing the waters by eliminating the bezels on just one iPad size first. See how well it is recieved, and then go from there. Hmmm.

I don't believe they would change the older line up. Likely they would focus on the this new iPad size and or sizes they plan offering. The 9.7/12.9 Pro would see discounts and the 12.9 Pro would likely see a refresh being it would be exactly at 18 months in March.

Unless this 10.5 iPad has something completely different to offer than the other models. It is a bit confusing at the moment.

that's ok. no worries.

100% true

who cares.

still rocking my ipad 3 and i hardly use it nowadays since i have an iphone 6 plus aka tiny ipad
