I was planning to buy an ipad pro 11 inch last year but differences between 11 inch and the 12.9 should not have happened (except for the size) the screen on the bigger one was a different and better technology but both are called "PRO"... i passed and built a new PC instead.

Would not be too surprising: as others have already mentioned, the iPad is a relatively mature product. And at prices >1k€ for the Pros, it's also too expensive to swap it out every year.
That being said, I look forward to the new Mini (Mini Pro would be even better, but I don't see that happening).

Which operating system did you choose? Please don't say Windows. 😂

Maybe make iPadOS better for various professionals rather than limited to creativity? Or make it work like macOS? iPad sitting in Between iPhone and Mac, not quite Mac but bulkier than iPhone while doing 90% of things iPhone can do, makes it a harder sale.
This. What’s the purpose of an iPad? My kids get the most use out of it. I have the iPad Pro. Only use when when I am on an airplane to watch movies. Outside of the the OS is to limited to use as a viable replacement for a laptop.

Yeah, you're right. To me owning an iPad is like buying a yearly release of NFL Madden on the Playstation. No matter the year, the experience seems the same. So eventually I got bored and stopped buying Madden. The only way I now consider a new iPad is if it stops getting software support and I am still getting OS upgrades on my 6th gen.

The geniuses in Cupertino really need to figure out how to enhance the iPad experience 13 years on. Google's done that with their Pixel phones by using clever software to separate themselves from others even though the hardware is not as good as the current iPhone's.
The iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch kind of work with that Madden analogy too. Being it's pretty much the same experience year to year. Apple definitely has the money to innovate more with these products. Steve Jobs' old quote "...Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do..." I don't think we've seen that for a while with Apple, unfortunately.

I'm sort of expecting something with the iPad to change soon as profits/revenue from the line keeps dropping, though 7.2bn is still a lot. Otherwise, it's just going to be another dead product.

Upgrade cycles have lengthened for all devices from all brands.

Unless they can rope in new users and keep existing users alive to continue buying their device then they will see stagnant revenue.

You can improve margins by lowering cost of bill of materials, operational expenses and other cost centers.

Iif Apple doesn't let the iPad Pro OS grow up, it is going to surely die. The iPad Pro had a huge advantage over the MacBook Air as a mobile computer, but with Apple Silicon, but that advantage is gone. I know there are some folks with the misplaced idea that it is best to keep the iPad dumbed, but that does not help those who want to use the iPad Pro for PRO work.

True but the iPad is a mature device. There's only so much you can do with a tablet when it comes to the hardware. I'm not saying Apple needs to run macOS on the iPad but a more robust OS tailored to just the iPad might make the device more appealing other than as a consumption device which is primarily what they are used for. I have been buying iPad's since the iPad 2 and it's basically the same experience for me 12 years later.
I have this crazy idea: you know, since the iPad is so powerful, maybe Apple should... I don't know, ALLOW IT TO MAKE MORE THINGS. Like programming with an iPad. Or a full-blown OS.

I know. CRAZY, right?

What they need to do is quit being cowards and put full Mac OS on there and still allow iPad apps. Then I would sell my Surface Pro 9....maybe. I mean I already got tired of waiting and sold my M1 iPad Pro 12.9" to buy the Surface Pro 9....

This guy consumes. So do it. My iPado pro 2018 will not die.
I envy your battery of your 2018. My 2018 battery lasts me 1-3 days. :-\

It has been submerged in shower water 2x and had a the glass screen fall on the metal faucet head of my sink.

Still alive!

But in truth if the device is to consume media then what incentive is there to replace before its final Security Update at 9+ years?

I'm scheduling my 2018's replacement in 2027 to benefit from the 1st iPad Pro with user swappable battery.

I upgrade when software features limits are enforced. For example, M1 iPads are the only ones capable of virtual memory swap and external monitor support.

If the OLED iPPs that are due next year doesn't have any limitations in terms of software features... I'll gladly keep my M1 iPad Pro.

My battery is definitely end of life as well but making due still.

Is there any way we can replace battery?

Don't worry. Apple has made sure that the only way you can replace your battery is using a device that spreads heat in the screen to dissolve the glue, or else you break your screen.

If you have an iPad Pro, that will be even harder.

Isn't it wonderful? You'll prompted to buy a shiny new, same-y iPad while you give your money to Apple!

I am hoping the next iPad Mini 7 has FaceID because the Touch ID isn’t awesome. Or make a iPad Mini Pro. If this happens I’m for sure purchasing that upgrade!

I also agree it’s mostly iPadOS holding people back from upgrading.

Apple sells fewer units these days at a higher price and fatter margins. This strategy has been keeping iPad revenue basically flat for a decade. Now they're looking at prospects of fewer units at the same prices.
Just a few weeks ago there was a story posted here on MacRumors which discussed tablet sales being down across the board.

But Apple, which is the sales leader in the sector, had sales declines less steep than the competition.

It's just a product category that has found its maturity. From here on out the goal of any company will be to protect their margins and marketshare, by finding ways to control costs.

I got a 9th gen iPad as a glorified gaming device. I wouldn't have minded doing Apple Arcade for a whole year at a time (it's only $45/yr at Costco). However, I ended up getting gifted a Switch, and a good deal of video gaming time has gone towards that instead. Only spent $300 on it years back, and not paying the extra $150 to go from 64 to 256 GB ended up being the right call since I spend low amount of time with it.

Even with that purchase, I plan on using that iPad for another 5 to 7 years.

It seems the line needs to split, let the iPad Pro evolve into a full Surface style hybrid, mostly for use with a MacOS style interface when docked, but can also be used with an iPadOS like interface when not. Full MacOS versions of apps like Safari and Final Cut. Then just have the iPad, mini and Air as pure tablets. Maybe offer the Air in 10.9" and 12.9" sizes. No need for the M series chips in the iPads, the A series should be plenty, and keep them in the original sort of $300-700 price range.
