I can say with 100% certainty that the actual shipping product will not look a ton like this render, which sort of looks like you slapped a thick clear TPU case on top of the actual phone.

When have the renders ever actually looked as good or better as the final product (leaving aside 'we don't understand physics'-type ones like the iMac that somehow wasn't going to tip over.)

I think it looks pretty cool and futuristic.

I’m torn on which to get between this and the Air. Though if they’re named the 17 maybe I’ll wait a year just because it’s an ugly number ha

y'all really gotta stop taking rumors so seriously. these kinds of super ugly redesigns have been rumored a lot in the past. happens with almost every iphone. most of them never come true.

The Apple logo placement looks objectively hideous there. They should have kept it where it was. They’re not making great design decisions, unless there’s something we’re missing here.

why is it bad to have visible magnets in a case?
Visible magnets don’t look as clean as a case without them, particularly when they line up so awkwardly with the Apple logo. That’s why it's a bad situation.

MagSafe is a good compromise — the design isn’t great to look at, but it works really well. So even though the ring and line isn't visually ideal, the functionality makes up for it.

Hence "the best of a bad situation".

This has a subsequent impact on the appearance of MagSafe accessories, since the magnetic ring on clear cases would obscure the Apple logo. To resolve this, Apple will apparently change the distinctive MagSafe magnet array to add a break in the circle to allow the Apple logo to show through.

This makes no sense to me. The magnet array is on the inside, not visible from the outside. Regardless where the logo is, there’s no need create a break in the ring (and thus weaken the hold) because it will look the same on the outside regardless. That said, moving the Apple logo makes sense from a visual balance standpoint with the camera bar. The ring might also move down to make room for the camera bar to keep it from interfering with accessories, but I see the logo and the ring as independent from a visual design standpoint, and I don’t think visual alignment of a cable or accessory that’s already blocking part or all of the logo anyway is going to override that design independence.

Now, it may be that Apple’s clear case breaks the ring, but that’s just the case, and while the case will have a weaker MagSafe hold because of the break, it doesn’t mean the ring inside the phone isn’t still complete. In other words, this alignment issue is only an issue with clear cases that aren’t attached to an accessory.

Also, I agree this render is probably way off base with the phone’s visual design. The render may be based on accurate leaked measurement data (what the case makers actually care about), but that says nothing about appearance. In particular, I’m dubious the glass part is so visually obvious in quite the same way. This render makes it look like a battery compartment cover or something, and I don’t see Apple doing that. The real design will be much better looking in ways measurements don’t tell.

Bottom line: I think the only issue here is with clear cases. But then, I’ve always found the magnet array in clear cases to be horrible looking. I like the idea of a clear case so you can appreciate the phone’s design (and I have one for that reason on my iPad), but that magenet array keeps me away from them on the phone side. This update may make the situation worse, but I don’t buy for a second that the clear case is driving phone-internal design.
