Yeah, I think I will definitely buy the new iPad model coming out soon! I haven't bought the iPad because it is crippled: no video camera, no retina display, slow A4 processor, overheating, etc, etc.

WOW, what a comment, have you ever had an iPad in your hand? FAR from crippled.

As someone who bought an iPad on day one while knowing I will buy a new version some time in the future, allow me to correct your FUD, for FUD is what that was in the classic sense of the term. So for anyone wondering about today's iPad, let someone who actually owns one tell you how it is:

1. No video camera -- This is true, and I was initially disappointed by this temporary omission. But I've probably missed it once in the 4.5 months I've owned my iPad. If you require a camera, this is not the FUD part. It's true.

2. No retina display -- And there won't be for a while. And boy is the current iPad screen absolutely gorgeous! Everyone comments on how beautiful it is, how clear it is to read on, etc.

3. Slow A4 processor -- LOL, this thing is fast! It plays anything.

4. Overheating -- I can't even get it to be warm. The overheating reports are from people using it outdoors in direct sunlight on a hot day. In normal use, it's the coolest handheld device Apple makes.

In short, future iPads will of course be nicer. But the current iPad is no more crippled than a new Ferrari is a clunker.

Exactly, there's no question the current iPad is nothing short of amazing.

the iPhone 3,2 and 3,3 are the GSM and CDMA versions of the iPhone 4 with the antenna fix.

They may get more new features than just a fixed antenna. What about a faster A9 Cortex processor?

Antenna fix? Didn't the turtlenecked overlord tell us that there was nothing wrong with the antenna?

;)

It tried, but it was so heavy that I got cramps in my hand. Back to Kindle for reading....

If so, I hope I get the same $100 refund from AmEx and the same $100 store credit from Apple. :(
I bought an iPad maybe a month, ago but the rumored specs of the new one aren't enough for me to feel cheated. I'm still happy with my purchase.

iPhone 3,2 could be an improved version of the iP 4 for AT&T and iPhone 3,3 could be the Verizon version.

My thoughts as well. I would make sense to have different versions, especially as verizon phones do not require sim cards

That's all that matters. Of course, you may feel a little different the day the 2nd gen iPad drops, but that's life.

Doubtful. Apple hasn't even completed the international rollout of the existing device.

More likely, it would be a second iPad model, a smaller unit (competes more directly with eReaders on the market, less expensive to boot).

Sounds about right though I wouldn't be surprised if Apple just keeps on insisting the iPad is the perfect size already.

I'd like to see 512MB RAM minimum inside instead of 256MB and of course iOS 4. When the iPad came out and it only had 256MB RAM, that was the only hardware spec that put a total pause on my purchase.

But, then the UI on the iPad sucked donkey balls too. It's bad enough on the iPhone but on a screen as big as the iPad, iOS is silly. The home screens are silly. The 'everything has to be full screen' thing is silly. It's easily fixed by just allowing dashboard style widgets and ditching the iPhone style home screens but it puzzles me why Apple shipped such a half realised product.

So, an iPad v2 might be pretty cool. Smaller would be nice too but keep the 1024x768 display.

why would iOS 4 be fine for a 3GS user and horrible for an iPad user?

Depends on your definition of 'fine'

Since iOS4 I've found the 3GS to occasionally not perform as well as when it was on version 3. Occasional stutter on the iPod, when using the phone for something else.

I think the faster CPU will make these issues irrelevent in the iPad though.

Imma be peeved if we see an iPad revision this soon, as I finally bought one on Saturday.

I think you'll be waiting awhile for a Retina display on the iPad. Do you realize how many pixels that would be for the processor to push?

My iPhone 4's display has forever ruined me as far as high-end premium displays are concerned.

There are some (but sadly not enough) that would pay a lot of $$ to get a "retina"-type display for the iMac or some other kind of monitor. Or how about one for the MacBook Pro? :D (maybe with a super high-end video card and a 3+GHz CPU? mmmhmmm....)

I'm not sure how you guys are quantifying, "a relatively minor hardware revision." Maybe you mean in the same vein as the 3GS was to the 3G?

I think it's pretty safe to say that we're looking at a camera bump from 5MP to 8MP as has been documented (rumored) here. I'll go out on a limb to say that they won't keep the storage sizes the same again and it will be upped from 16GB and 32GB to 32GB and 64GB. I would also bet that with the giant flap about the antennae, it will be altered as well.

All I know is that I bought my 3GS on the day it came out switching from T-Mobile to AT&T. According to AT&T I'm not eligible to upgrade my iPhone until February 2011. It would be crazy to upgrade then when all signs point to a new iPhone coming out just a couple months later in the June timeframe. For my part, I'm hoping next year's model packs in a whole bunch of new stuff since I'm waiting for it :)

I definitely agree with you on this. I think the next IP will be Apples offset to 3G to the 3GS. Apple wants every person possible to own an iphone, so slowly adding the newest of the new features is a catch 22. Some people forget that Apple is brand new to the cell phone making game, so the innovation for them is still building. Some complain about why Apple has not came out with a feature another cellphone maker has on their model all the time.
It is not because they are with holding (Well maybe to a point), They are simply trying to figure out how to get it all to work right with the new hidden things that are within the new device.
I really think this up coming year is going to be a real headbanger!

iPad hasn't even finished its international rollout yet, and some of you are saying we'll see one before the new year?! My favourite post in this thread was from the dude claiming Apple was "holding back" iOS 4 for iPad in order to ship a refreshed model alongside it. (or perhaps he was joking).

I imagine the next iPad will be announced in late January/early Feburary, potentially alongside a CDMA iPhone and possible speed/hardware bumps.
Another intelligent analyst. Apple does not want to have the same headache as last time they did an immediate release and having to give out "Gift Cards" to angry customers. So I concur with your statement. They will *mention* the new products Jan/Feb. and release them months later.

Could one of the iPhones be a mini USB version for the EU?? Those changes need to be made by Jan 2011.

i don't know whether it has been speculated but maybe the iPad is a CDMA version. After all, releasing a CDMA iPhone without a CDMA iPad would be kind of silly from a marketing perspective as it would make Apple look halfway committed to the CDMA market.

It's skeptics like you of technological progress who are the ones I worry about. And yes, I know how many pixels it would take to make the iPad retina-capable. And how much it cost? Give me a break. I was one of the first to buy Apple's 23" cinema displays that cost $6000; now you you can buy three or four 27" iMacs for that same price. Newsflash, price of technology goes down faster than that last porn actress.

And the iPad is marketed as the complete opposite. You can start high and then drop low. When have you seen a consumer oriented tech product hike its price 300% and remain as successful as before?

If Apple wants rapid adoption of its platform, hiking the iPad price to $3000 just so they can put out a tablet with 326 dpi is ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that you wind up with a resolution of 2530x1897 on a 9.7" diagonal screen in 4:3 format. Why on earth would any normal consumer need a resolution like that in the current market? No really, explain that. Hell, even at 300dpi you're at 2328x1746, still well beyond the needs of the consumers the product is aimed at.

Aside from the fact that iTunes doesn't even rent or sell media at 1080p, NO MEDIA IS SOLD above 1080p for general consumption. So what exactly would someone do with their iTunes media-centered device that would require that high of resolution? View hi-res photos? Great. That's it. And for that one single practical boost you wind up shelling out thousands and thousands of dollars or having Apple subsidize thousands of dollars worth of tech on a million units? Not to mention the bumped hardware that would be needed to drive such a display with a reasonable framerate for not only media, but games (which have now become a centerpiece of the device's attractiveness)

The best chance for a boost to the iPad display this year is to a DPI of around 185, which would put the display at roughly 1440x1080 (still below "Retina" quality even at a farther distance from the user) and produce mild scaling as opposed to the horrific scaling you'd see going to 2530x1897 (a resolution which in itself is absurd at this time on a device that small). Not to mention Apps would have to be rewritten if they want to avoid scaling, the iPhone apps which still haven't been redone for the iPad would suffer even GREATER scaling problems, and iTunes wouldn't offer any media in 1080p for your shiny new 1080p screen (unless they debuted 1080 media with the device, which would still take time to roll out).

He didn't say it was a failure. A product can be crippled and still be successful as Apple has managed to prove. It's an admirable trick to pull off.

A product being crippled doesn't mean its a failure.

Crippled? LOL...The iPhone 4 is hardly crippled. I pull down 3 to over 5Mbps and the uplink is 1.5-2Mbps. I have tried in different areas of L.A. to recreate the reception issue and I can't. And I did watch the "tutorials" on YouTube. Reception on the iPhone 4 actually is better than on the 3GS. Either that, or they put up a bunch of new towers in the L.A. area.

On a different note, I'm someone who hates cases, because it takes away from the beauty of a device, IMO. I did, however, use a case with the 3GS to protect its back and the sides. I love the fact that I can get away with just one of those bumpers from Apple, as both sides of the iPhone 4 are made of this scratch-proof glass. I love the look of the new iPhone 4, and the black bumper actually adds an awesome look to it as well as a great feel! I don't know why, but holding the phone with one hand touching both sides, and in doing so holding nothing but glass, makes me happy. :D

Yup. I was thinking a few days ago that this is one thing that Apple have got really right with the iPhone. The iPhone release cycle has now become so predictable that anyone coming in new to the Apple world who takes just a few minutes of time to do some research will know that if they buy an iPhone for Christmas then they are buying a model in about month 6 of its 12 month life cycle and that the next new model will be announced at WWDC in June with availability sometime around 1st July plus or minus a couple of weeks. Everyone knows what they're buying, when it will be upgraded, and has no excuse for getting all upset if they buy an iPhone in early June only for the successor to be announced a few weeks later.

I really hope that Apple do fall into the same highly predictable release cycle for the iPad, it makes everyone's life easier. I wonder though if the gap between releasing the spec and shipping the product will narrow. This is what we saw with the iPhone; the very first iPhone spec was announced about 5 months in advance of the product shipping. Maybe with the first iPad there had been rumours for so long that they felt compelled to say something well in advance of actual product availability. Perhaps the influx of iPad competitors, and hence the level of innovation currently required in the tablet market, is sufficiently high that Apple need to have the 3 or 4 month window between spec announcement and shipment still, but as the market matures then I personally hope that the gap goes away and becomes similar to the iPhone.
