I predict many will be pissed off by September but also many will be happy. Let's just see what apple comes out with for all we know they might keep to there regular release shcedual. But as long as there are no major changes for the new iPad and iPhone I wont buy them. If the iPhone just has a fixed antenna I can care less even if it is cmda I could care less. But as for iPad there are many reasons why I would get a new one say like better ram, retna display, camera, sd slot, and a couple other things but these are son things we all would like

Another possibility for the second new radio is 3G including the T-Mobile data frequency band.

Cultof mac stated that there source said that by the end of the 3Q there was going to be a T-mobile iphone and for january 2011 a verizon. Lets see if things goes as said. September is just around the corner with the end of the 3Q.

They will. Steve said in the "Fall" that iOS4 will come to iPad. Not sure why this is even under discussion.

You're probably right. There would be too many pissed off iPad owners if they kept iOS 4 from them. Then again, they may still get pissed if performance suffers from the update.

I don't see why performance will suffer. The iPad will likely handle iOS 4 just fine.

Yeah, I think I will definitely buy the new iPad model coming out soon! I haven't bought the iPad because it is crippled: no video camera, no retina display, slow A4 processor, overheating, etc, etc.

You're not getting retina, over heating is you spending way too much time online and not with the actual product, and crippled is not a way to describe an item without a camera.

Slow A4 processor? Perhaps in your eyes but if you actually ponied up the cash for an iPad you'd see that it is quite fast.

New iPads, I suspect, won't hit until next year.

I'm skipping the iPhone 4. I'll rock out with my old school 3G until iPhone 5 comes out.

EDIT: You want to know something funny, I just cracked my 3G's LCD display, a quarter of the screen is gray pixels. The sleep/wake button does not work anymore either. :( I jinxed myself.

I know iPhone 3G users are complaining about iOS 4 being slow, but not iPhone 3GS users. Since the iPhone 3GS has:

A8 CPU at 600 MHz

and the iPad has:

A4 CPU at 1 GHz

and both have 256 MB RAM, why would iOS 4 be fine for a 3GS user and horrible for an iPad user? Makes no sense to me. I've seen iOS 4 on an iPhone and know it works fine. Therefore I assume it will work fine on my iPad.

Until we see otherwise, I call FUD on this.

Well, you have to expect that the 2nd gen iPad with better specs will probably perform better with iOS 4. Some people might expect to get the same results with their 1st gen iPad and be disappointed.

JAN. 2011 - announce
FEB. 2011 - for sale

That's my prediction, and I will honesty announce it is based on complete bunk. Trust me with that.

I wonder if Apple will make a meal of iPad releases for the next couple years, to draw heightened press to the product. It would make sense until the iPad is old-hat for the consumer and is a trusted device set in its way on a steady schedule.

The past month made me wonder if the next iPad would be a fun purchase for mobile use, but I expect the iPad 3 might be a hugh leap forward in processing. Sure, the next iPad will have a lot more little baubles like cameras, but ultimately it is pure productive function and not novelty that will make me HAVE to buy an iPad.

New iPad Size

First let me say that I absolutely love my iPad. I barely touch my macbook anymore and have kicked around the idea of selling and buying a mini since I use the iPad so much. I probably won't, but it has crossed my mind.

Anyway, if a new iPad with a smaller screen size comes out I don't know if I'd give it much consideration. Before the iPad was announced and all the rumors about the size were flying around I thought a 7" screen would be a perfect balance of screen size and portability. The iPad is extremely portable and I think if you tried to shrink some iPad specific applications to fit on a 7" screen you'd lose something. Forget the apps, what about movies / tv? I download a bunch of content off the interwebs, get the files into iTunes and onto the iPad and watch a ton of HBO, Showtime and movies on it. I couldn't imagine giving up that much real estate. Size does matter :p But if this is the direction Apple is going I'm sure they'll pull it off.

Speaking of iPad specific apps and going a bit off topic, when the heck is Facebook going to do an iPad version? Even with fullforce, I still feel like its nowwhere near where it should be on the iPad.

iPhone and iPad

Looking back upon the wwdc event it seems that AT&T hasn't ever done an upgrade elegibility. So it makes me question that AT&T has used this to their best so that more people will upgrade and stay with them for 2 years. So more people will be with AT&T, this may be due to verizon being a carrier for the iPhone. Also september the 30th apple stops the cases so maybe iPhone 3.2 is a revised iPhone to solve the antenna issues and iPhone 3.3 is the verizon one. Further more there will be a iPod event in September to talk about the new iPods and maybe the release of details about the verizon iPhone and new revised iPhone. This would be just in time for holiday season.

Yes, of course all future iPad versions will run iOS 4 better, that's a given. I was answering the FUD that was pretending iOS 4 on the iPad will result in poor performance. I'm sure it won't.

Few, if any, real iPad competitors will emerge this calendar year. Why introduce new hardware? The intro of iOS 4 will be enough to keep the buzz alive for the holidays, then when the next year rolls around and other tablets begin to emerge, Apple will dazzle with new hardware.

Absolutely. This thing far surpasses my expectations.

iPad = best portable Internet browsing device ever.

I agree completely. The responsiveness of the screen and the ease of use, combined with the apps, it's a great device. And I don't for one moment regret having gone with v1.0 (which I do often with Apple products). I can't wait to see more great apps come out.

With v2.0 it'll be interesting to see how they improve it. The smaller (rumoured) version I'm not so interested in. Less weight, yes, I'm interested. Camera, no, not at all. Better screen resolution? Maybe, but I'm quite happy with it the way it is. Other than that I'm not expecting or wanting anything but I'm sure they have loads of things in the roadmap that will impress.

Great device and can't wait to see what the next version brings with it.

Imma be peeved if we see an iPad revision this soon, as I finally bought one on Saturday.

I think you'll be waiting awhile for a Retina display on the iPad. Do you realize how many pixels that would be for the processor to push?

Well it's gonna be a much faster processor.
And why would you have bought one on saturday? You've been a part of this community since 2003, you've gotta know that after releasing an iPhone that is way better spec wise than the iPad, and with the iPad not having some basic functions that it needs thaty they would be releasing a new one very soon.

I would return it before its too late : ( You'll be pissed.

One reason to consider when guessing the announce/release time(s) of the new rev iPad, is that Apple only announced iPad in January 2010 releasing in April 2010 because it was the first product (revision) of it's kind, and announcing and releasing months apart did not hurt any existing sales, because no existing sales were to be had!

So, if they show pictures and press about the fabulous new iPad 2 months before it is available for sale, who will buy the existing one? How do they sell them to customers at the Apple Store? Apple has a 2 week window to return your just purchased Mac if a new one comes out right after you buy it, right? The thing is, they never announce when a new Mac revision is "going to be" released, they just do it and start selling it on the same day or shortly thereafter if they've purposely been depleting their stocks leading up to it as in the case of the Mac Pro recently.

If a customer knows a better faster iPad will be for sale in 6 weeks, say, why on earth would they buy the one at the store today? That's why the iPhone 4 leak was so bad for business-- Apple saw a distinct drop off in 3G and 3GS sales leading up to it, except for those extremely uninformed customers who didn't see or hear the national press story that the "soon-to-be-released" iPhone was!

My guess is an annual refresh, which would make it APRIL 2011. :)

I bought one on Saturday because I'm aware of Apple's long tradition of a yearly update cycle for its mobile devices.

I'm not aware of any "basic functions that it needs" based on my use thus far. Care to elaborate?

so, some of you think Apple is going to update hardware to address "the antenna problem"...they won't until next summer, if ever..and when they do..I'll be demanding an exchange as should any reasonable person that bought an iP4 this summer

Yeah, I think I will definitely buy the new iPad model coming out soon! I haven't bought the iPad because it is crippled: no video camera, no retina display, slow A4 processor, overheating, etc, etc.

This is why the Apple community has gone downhill. People like this who regurgitate Keynote talking points from different products.

Do you have any idea how many pixels would be required to make an iPad sized display "retina"? Care to venture a guess as to how much such a display would cost? Christ almighty.

It's skeptics like you of technological progress who are the ones I worry about. And yes, I know how many pixels it would take to make the iPad retina-capable. And how much it cost? Give me a break. I was one of the first to buy Apple's 23" cinema displays that cost $6000; now you you can buy three or four 27" iMacs for that same price. Newsflash, price of technology goes down faster than that last porn actress.

Not that much. To be "retina" it doesn't need anywhere near the dpi of the iPhone 4, since the iPad is not held as close to the face as a phone. Some experts have calculated it around 220dpi (might have been a little higher - somewhere in the low to mid-200's, though), if I recall correctly. So something like 1600x1152 should be good enough, though scaling would be a little awkward (though perhaps they'd just make old iPad apps run in frames like iPhone apps).
