I remember iPad having half the RAM of the iPhone 4. Post corrected. Anyhow, the gist of my post stands.

Yeah, and the iPhone 4 has 512mb. But I don't think the gist of your post stands. How is the A4 crippled? Have you seen how fast the thing is running iOS on the iPad and on the iPhone 4?

iPad hasn't even finished its international rollout yet, and some of you are saying we'll see one before the new year?! My favourite post in this thread was from the dude claiming Apple was "holding back" iOS 4 for iPad in order to ship a refreshed model alongside it. (or perhaps he was joking).

I imagine the next iPad will be announced in late January/early Feburary, potentially alongside a CDMA iPhone and possible speed/hardware bumps.

new GSM/3G chips?

1,1 was the original app CPU/RAM/GFx with Edge radios/baseband
1,2 was the original app CPU/RAM/GFx with 3G radios/baseband

So:

4,1 is the i4
4,2 and 4,3 are likely the i4, except with 2 new radio or baseband chips.

Maybe they are going to improve the GSM/3G dropped call problem, not by changing the antenna (they like the looks, or customers who can "hold different"), but by using a better radio chip or radio controller chipset?

Or is LTE being tested anywhere yet? Could that be the second new radio?

It should be noted the iPhone 4 has more RAM than the iPad due to its camera, or at least that's what's been suggested. The new camera module is resource heavy and Apple had to accomodate that by adding in more RAM.

To those claiming 256MB won't be sufficient for iPad to multitask - make sure to remind us of that little gem again when we're all going multitasking-happy in November.

So is this the current labling system?

iPhone1,1 - Original iPhone
iPhone1,2 - iPhone 3G
iPhone2,1 - iPhone 3GS
iPhone3,1 - iPhone 4
iPhone3,2 - iPhone 4/5 (new antenna)?
iPhone3,3 - iPhone 4/5 (CDMA)?

iProd0,1 - Prototype iPad
iProd1,1 > iPad1,1 - iPad
iProd2,1 - iPad 2 (with forward facing camera)?

That looks about right. Also iPod Touch models are in there also. I don't remember the sequence of names for them.

So, maybe.....

iPhone1,1 - Original iPhone
iPhone1,2 - iPhone 3G
iPhone2,1 - iPhone 3GS
iPhone3,1 - iPhone 4
iPhone3,2 - iPhone 4/5 (new antenna AT&T)?
iPhone3,3 - iPhone 4/5 (new antenna T-Mobile)?

I wasn't joking. I stated both cases actually. On one hand, i'm doubtful Apple will release a new iPad as they haven't finished the international rollout. On the other hand, it seems odd that no iO.S.4 is out for iPad yet, and we don't have anything more than a vague date, ergo it may bring some surprises they don't want us to know yet.

That's why I thought Apple could ship a new model alongside the current one, and with that release iO.S.4.

That's true. I'm still a bit skeptical on the timing. November at the earliest.

But let's say iPad 2 is ready to go for next April. Will Apple not bring it out because there is no competition?

Oh, no, Apple certainly will bring out the new iPad whenever it is ready regardless of the competition. You're right about that. I just don't think we'll see a new iPad version so soon.

I could see a different iPad model (smaller, larger, who knows?) coming out sooner as a complement to the current iPad, expanding the iPad family as it were. But to just replace the current iPad model in the next couple of months seems very unlikely.

Absolutely. The A4 is very crippled and slow. The iPad needs more RAM to really have the A4 shine, but then the A4 is slow compared to what Apple should have released. I wish people would educate themselves before going into fanboy rant mode. It really ruins the forum experience for me.

It makes you wonder if the 1st gen iPad will even get the iOS 4 update.

Fair enough - I think it's likely Apple will address iOS 4 for iPad in a few weeks during the iPod refresh, so the conspiracy theories might end there. ;)

It wouldn't be too difficult to suspect that Apple is working an antenna fix with these test devices.

My hope is that Apple is peeved with AT&T's exclusive deal with RIM over the Torch and is looking to get a CDMA device out soon for Verizon and China Mobile.

It's 256mb actually - the same as the 3GS

BTW, the problems with iOS4 on the iPhone 3G isn't due to the RAM - it's mainly the 333mhz processor - a problem the iPad doesn't have.

Um the CPU ran at 412Mhz. You may have been thinking of the PSP which does run at 333Mhz.

Waiting for Apple to release the Rev. B iPhone 4 with a redesigned antenna. Hope people don't whine too much that already bought the flawed iPhone. Apple shouldn't have to give them store credit like they did before (original iPhone price cut), they already got free cases/ bumpers. I will of course wait a bit before buying to make sure the quality of engineering is up to par this time.

A rubber band is no equivalent to a properly designed phone.

I love the iPad version of Reeder. Ditto for Evernote.

I use Evernote daily on my work iMac, home MacBook, and iPhone, and neither the desktop nor iPhone version of the software come close to matching the beauty of the iPad version. I know it would be very difficult to scale the iPad version's UI down to a device like the iPhone, but I keep hoping.

Stop reminding me. Every time I pick up my iPad it makes me cry with joy how fast apps work with it. But every time I pick up my iPhone 3G it makes me cry with sad that I don't have the full iOS4 support I so desperately want.

Though I guess that's good for AT&T, I might have jumped ship for a DroidX to use as a mobile hotspot for my iPad if I didn't need some of the features of iOS4 (most notably multiple exchange server support).
