Just drop it, Bough! Headphone jack will be a non-issue in a few years' time when everybody else drops it too. Apple lead and the rest follow, as per.

How can you be so sure?

Also, what do you expect to replace it, USB-C or Lightning? Or both? You see the problem here right.

I don't see it disappearing.

Did I mention it can also stream high definition video over the air? And it can also mimic a credit card so you can also pay for things with it in a store?

Sadly that only applies to some countries; and I'm amazed that USA, which apparently still uses cheques (or checks, as American-English), has Apple Pay - whereas I don't o_O

Why?
The button at the back is a perfect place for a finger when I hold it, unless you only have two thumbs and no other digits.

The iPhone's button is awkwardly placed when using Apple Pay…

Being able to unlock your phone from the front seems more intuitive to me. I've nothing against the back scanner though, and like you say it is better being higher up the device.

Because being able to do it anywhere in the screen is better than doing it in that one spot in the back.
We're not comparing it to the current placement, but to the new tech.

And I think it's obvious they won't drop TouchID, the tech may change, but it's a feature they've invested a lot in and it's great for Apple Pay and stuff like that - also, now that the MBP has it, it'd bee too much of a disjointing move to drop it from the iPhone.

Honestly don't want to be negative and hope I'll be proven wrong, but if I we've learned anything about Apple, it's probably best to steer clear from 1st generations of very new stuff. I will probably skip this upcoming gen and hold on to my 7+.

"as when "Force Touch" on the MacBook became "3D Touch" on the iPhone"

Why do people say thing? They're not the same thing and never were supposed to be.

It sounds like it could be a drain on the battery if it's actively sending out sound waves. Is it doing this all the time or is it a triggered function? I would imagine Apple would not implement it unless all possible drawbacks are resolved. They patent so many interesting things that don't get implemented for years, if ever.

Why wouldn't they be able to make it trigger? What an odd thing to worry about.

Touching the screen (or even the back of the phone) anywhere to unlock the phone would be absolutely amazing. Kinda like the whole Watch proximity sensor to unlock a Mac, but quite a bit more impressive.

No. Force Touch and 3D Touch are based on the same technologies and use Apples Taptic Engine, but one is better than the other. See here: https://www.wired.com/2015/09/what-is-the-difference-between-apple-iphone-3d-touch-and-force-touch/

Basically, the two technologies do the same things, but the iPhones get an additional level of sensitivity. Force Touch has less capability to measure touches and presses and doesn’t react as quickly to input, whereas 3D Touch is more sensitive, reacts immediately and allows different "levels" of actions based on how firmly you press.. That's why Apple chose to give them different names.

I remember how even Craig Federighi accidentally referred to 3D Touch as "Force Touch" when talking up the new iPhones, so obviously the two technologies are somewhat aligned even in the minds of Apple bods.

The extra black options... Night Shift... now this 'acoustic imaging system architecture'... Apple is clearly working towards the day when they can rename the iPhone as the BatPhone.

If Apple had to remove the headphone jack from the 7 series iPhone because of space issues how pray-tell are they going to fit all this cool new tech into the same form factor? Or was the space issue just BS?

No it's called progress. The headphone jack has been around since the 19th century......

Crucially, the system is capable of being configured to scan for particular body parts like a user's ear or a skin pattern, in order to determine how the device is being held.
Am I the only one who read that and immediately came up with like 100 dirty jokes?

Didn't this already appear on an iPhone 6 or 6 plus when the touchid was faulty? Something like "bring your phone to Apple when you can but in the mean time use the screen with your finger to unlock."

I am pretty sure there was an article awhile back like that.

These names from china didn't invent this technology, they have no real claim.

Well, they were first on the market and OnePlus 3(T) has the fastest and (even under hard conditions like wet fingers) most reliable fingerprint reader currently available.
They're probably sourcing those parts from a third party and didn't invent the technology themselves, but ultrasound fingerprint readers are available on mass market products since Q2 2016 so filing a patent now seems a bit broad.
