Apple loves to spend ridiculous R&D budget on a problem that doesn't exist while they continue to use off the shelf battery technology and done seem to want to solve "hard" problems. Gimmicks to drive more upgrade sales.

While I can't blame a company for needing to put huge R&D into a product that makes so much money regardless of how little changes between releases, at some point a company like Apple is going to have to invest a lot more into innovation R&D and not just blow it on building cathedrals to contain their hubris.

I would like to see Apple invest in solving the battery issue. They need to help develop next generation battery technology that not only solves device power life issues but could usher in a new era of EV cars and renewable home or even city power solutions that do not rely on raping the earth of all its Lithium and fossil fuels. Its a win win for Apple if they make a battery to keep an iPhone alive for a few days AND can deliver a product to make EV car batteries lighter and have higher capacity energy storage. They can just buy or invest in many companies struggling to develop this technology and its chump change for Apple.

Apple has enough capital to solve some REAL problems not only facing their own products but the world in general, yet they seem intent on dumping money into vapid features that really don't bring anything new to the game other then a slightly faster way to unlock a boring phone. I am tired of Apple being so self absorbed by only spending money on vapid product advances and NEVER contributing anything back to society except another expensive slightly enhanced product.

I would like to see Apple start paying back consumers after years of taking their money by INNOVATING something beneficial to society for once; facial recognition or enhanced touch id, nobody is screaming a need for this

Hey all that R&D brought you the W1 chip , yay and $180 standard sound airpods...i've even heard form pundits "Most Apl device ever" LOL I think the HUMP battery case came out of that R&D too as did the Apl TV remote. I'm sure they studied how to best remove a jack too.

The X1 animation was cool with the pulsing waves

Meanwhile: Microsoft shelves Hololens v2 due to lack of viable competition. (apl/magic leap)..on to v3 in 2019

Serious question why wit all that R&D so many #gates and a battery that dies for many at 20%?
My only thought is thankfully they dropped the car, that would have been scary

You obvious have not tried Windows Hello Facial recognition...that's ok

I'm sure it's fine, but it seems less convenient to me to have to point my phone at my face. How does it work in the dark/low lighting? Do I have to position it just right? Just touching my finger on a button seems much easier.

If Apple takes away TouchID after taking the headphone jack it'll be like they're systematically taking away the features that I use the most!

Those are shipped #'s not sold #'s, thee was a time they ordered 90M phones and had to scale way back (6s) reminds me of the 160M OLED screens order from Samsung, wishful thinking.

They're sold, represented by $54.4B in revenue on their statement for the quarter. Their operations keep inventory to an absolute minimum.

Sure they do. After all they are so great with supply chain, timing and stocking stuff /s

Like Magsafe?
I truly enjoy my magnetic surface connector. and magnetic pen holder on side.

Last year Apple sold more than 200 million iPhones. Feel free to provide evidence to the contrary.

And how many MORE years will they be able to do so?
Its a 10yo product line. That's like Nintendo still actually selling Wii's in volume in 2017 (done)

iPhone was a slightly bigger hit, and replaced some devices had basically insecure Android as a competitor, of course they sold in volume...but things end they always do. World changes.

So far I see nothing coming to replace it and its tied to so many other apl products. watch was supposed to but sort of failed. Car? what?

Eco falling apart...no routers no displays , no professional computers ..scaling back

Your smart, so look at the apl eco its dying...except for watch bands lots going on there. I think Ive likes watch bands.

I'm a PC user so I've never owned a laptop with MagSafe, but it's one Mac feature that I always envied. You're right. That's another really nice feature that they just eliminated for no apparent reason.

If Apple had to remove the headphone jack from the 7 series iPhone because of space issues how pray-tell are they going to fit all this cool new tech into the same form factor? Or was the space issue just BS?
it has been proven that they could have fit it in. Most of the space it would have taken up was filled with empty space and a rubber screen for the mic.

So there was no need to remove from the 7 series then
basically yes.

Well, they were first on the market and OnePlus 3(T) has the fastest and (even under hard conditions like wet fingers) most reliable fingerprint reader currently available.
They're probably sourcing those parts from a third party and didn't invent the technology themselves, but ultrasound fingerprint readers are available on mass market products since Q2 2016 so filing a patent now seems a bit broad.
Perhaps it's using this?

Edit : Looks like this was already mentioned

Make the Apple logo an active device.

I think that would be really cool if they did a few years back they had a kit to do this yourself but I wasn't about to open my phone up and try it the online videos did make it look easy though.

"Did you know that in 10 years you'll have a device that'll fit in your pocket that is 3x more powerful than the current (2007) Mac Pro?

You know those new high definition blu rays? Yeah this device will be able to record video at a resolution 4x greater than that. It also has an app store where you can get virtually anything, including apps that can digitally alter your face in real time. Also if you strap it to your face it can act as an on-the-go virtual reality device too.

Did I mention it can also stream high definition video over the air? And it can also mimic a credit card so you can also pay for things with it in a store?

One last thing - we all kinda got bored unlocking these things with a 4 digit passcode. Urgh. Now it has a biometric fingerprint sensor so we don't have to do that any more.."

Man in 2007 - "You are talking utter ****!"
Curious, where are you from?

Northern Europe

Not sure if B.S. or incompetence

at the end of th day, virtually all of the competition have managed to fit just about everything, and in many cases even more than an iPhone has, without removing the headphone jack. In fact, if you look at whats in the space there now, its mostly empty except for a rubber stopper to assist with pressure and waterproofing (something else no other water proof phones needed).

so, was it B.S? or were Apple engineers unable to do what others are capable of leading to the requirement.

Other phones are waterproof while having headphone ports.
Other phones have more features (not saying important or not features, just that they have them) without running out of space for the headphone port. So Apple is either pulling an excuse out their arses, or their engineers aren't as good as the competition when it comes to internal layout/design

At first i like the "TouchID beneath the screen", but would this interfere with 3D Touch at all ? e.g touches not responding because their interpreted as 'TouchID' instead.

Best to go with the Iris scanner... You can't go wrong with that .... (well, not much can go wrong)

Just drop it, Bough! Headphone jack will be a non-issue in a few years' time when everybody else drops it too. Apple lead and the rest follow, as per.

As per what?
Pretty sure I’ve seen you say before that Apple take ideas and tech of others and make it accessible to all. That’s following what others have done.
Which one is it?

Companies don't pay back customers, that's not the way it works.

however being able to mix and match multiple forms of authentication would be nice.
