This all sounds great, the only thing that is annoying me is that if they were to make a new dock connector, wouldn't it be a bit unfortunate for "The new iPad" owners?

I have not measured it, but I did noticed the speed reduction from a FireWire iPod to the USB connection. And most of the times it takes a very long time to transfer movies, podcasts and music files to the iOS devices.
Your experience was almost certainly due to a sub-par USB 2 implementation (Apple was known for that). There is no way that 4200 rpm 1.8" HDD could ever hit the USB 2 ceiling, not back then. Even 2.5" HDD did only noticeably profit from FW800 vs. FW400 in their 7200 rpm versions

About increasing this speed by a factor of 3, Why not?
If they develop or have the technology, and can do it, why not?

Even the trend is make improvements in wireless data transfer with the cloud and all, but consider it. Not only for data transfer, but for charging the battery.

Having the faster charging battery in the market, is something that most users will like to have. And Apple love to promote things like that.

Those bar charts that they like to show up during the keynotes.
Showing an improvement by factor of 2x or 3x, or 4x.
Haven't I just shown you that TB will do nothing regarding charging speed (compared to USB 2)? And when was the last time Apple talked about syncing speed in a presentation?

You're missing the point & misleading readers. You've dodged the facts by talking about display dimensions, instead of staying on topic.

We're talking about the size of the phone. It's a proven fact that a Galaxy S with a 4.0" display is only marginally larger at 5.4mm wider.

I know, I own both of them.

You're missing the point: assuming the bezel is similar, the size is determined by the size of the display, and the size of the display itself is determined by both the diagonal and the aspect ratio.

It's possible to have a 4" display that's no bigger than iPhone's 3.5" if the aspect ratio is very different. LG BL40 for instance has a 4.0" display, but the display is virtually identical in size to iPhone's because of the aspect ratio.

gsmarena_007.jpg

I thought you actually want a "bigger" display, not a "longer" display. See the difference? A diagonal doesn't tell you the actual area of the rectangle if the aspect ratio is unknown. iPhone's 3.5" display is larger than the diagonal indicates because it's more square than most Android phones.

And I know, I own both Galaxy S and iPhone/iPod too. (technically iPhone belongs to my wife, but let's say it's mine for the sake of the argument)

While it is true TB doesn't make flash operate any faster, it does allow the data bus to deal with flash at full speed while it deals with wireless at full speed while it displays a HD movie at full speed, while it shows your head's up projector and earpiece at full capacity. On an iPhone. Or an iPod Nano.

Hmmm iPod Nano 2016 ~= MacPro 2009? :D

No I haven't. You know it's funny, but when I want to watch a movie I have this 50 inch screen on the wall. It's called a television. And I have these boxes attached to the walls, front and back, where the sound comes out. They're called speakers. The picture and sound quality are really amazing. If you're watching movies on a 4.3 inch screen you really are missing out.

What you NEED is to get yourself a dictionary and look up the meanings of these words you like to use, like 'PROGRESS' and 'NEED'. It's not 'progress'—it's your subjective preference. And it's not a 'need', it's a want. You WANT a bigger screen, and you WANT to watch movies when you're on the train, or wherever it is you find yourself without access to a TV, iPad, etc.

Condescending much??

I don't mind if the dock connector is smaller or not, I'd rather they focus on implementing a new Thunderbolt connector for the iPhone (and all iDevices in the future). They need to push on it a bit more, and what better way than with their own products? Make it the standard.

iPods used to use FireWire. They had to get rid of it for computers that don't have it. Shame.

I see now where I misinterpreted your prior post.

You're right, it would be great if Apple did not elongate the phone just to accommodate a larger display. I believe both Samsung & HTC have chosen excellent display sizes and aspect ratio's. While I'm not advocating for either company, I do believe in acknowledging good design.

Next up, just a bit about plastic, as a material. As I'm sure you know, there are literally 100's of types & quality levels of plastic. I am fortunate to have a friend who is an materials engineer who specialized in plastics. So the only point is I've learned a lot and have a new respect for it's various properties and qualities.

The "in hand feel" is no way to judge plastic durability, strength and quality. Yet it's only human nature to do so. Therefore far too many jump to the conclusion "it's plasticky" and condemn it.

The type of plastic used on Samsung & HTC brands are both excellent, yet different. The "in hand feel" of my new HTC One X is stellar. Yet it's of no higher grade than what Samsung uses, just different. The HTC has a textured finish, the Samsung is smooth. That's the only difference a layman notices. Both are of equally durability.

Aluminum, Glass or Plastic, it all simply boils down to personal preference. Quality wise, there too, is not much difference if any.

All too often people forget the massive resources these companies have. The huge engineering departments all do the same thing. They build the best phone they're given the OK to build. They are all, Apple, Samsung, HTC et al, highly skilled and doing exemplary work.

The bottom line from my perspective is overall Apple is capable of building the very best smartphone. The question is will they? Or will they "hold back some key elements" for later models? They've done this in the past and while they have their reasons. I think it's a mistake.

No other maker of luxury goods does this. They always give their best, knowing they'll keep creating & advancing. They have no reason to hold back, nor do they blame others within their industry, as has become Apples default practice.

Cheers :)

if the dock connector does in fact change, what are the chances that the overall design wouldn't? I think they would go for a total redesign if they are going to use the iPhone as the device that begins the transition away from the 30 pin.

If the 4, 4/s, and (for the sake of argument we will call it the) 5 all look exactly the same on the outside but one of them doesn't use the 30 pin you are likely to confuse some people. I love the design, I don't mind if they use it again, but in terms of really making a change in the 30 pin ecosystem I think it would be wise to give that shift a "face" so people can follow it more clearly.

Yeah, the cheap disposable apps, perhaps. What about the quality apps?

Could you name some quality apps that couldn't simply be adjusted to display more content vertically? I've been examining the apps that I use to find some that wouldn't be trivial to adjust. Most of them appeared to be just that (also it's funny that you mention cheap disposable apps, as those where the only ones on my phone that simply were laid out without some sort of easily enlargable content in the middle were cheap disposable apps and games).

Just a very poor paint job but you get the idea. (forgot the front camera)
And of course you are all gonna hate me for this. :p

What you are expecting out of an iPhone will never be. Apple's simplicity is what makes the iPhone so beautiful. I want something simple that lets me do what I need to do as quickly as possible not something I have to run through numerous settings and wait 6 months for an upgrade. I highly suggest you switch to android cause you are 10000% not going to get anything like that out of iOS. wow your entire paragraph goes against everything that Apple and the iPhone is about. Yes the S3 blows everything away with its hardware and it will most definitely be more powerful than the next iPhone BUT I guarantee after the first few months you will start to see it slow down. Apples integration of the hardware and software is FARR superior than any other handset maker out there making the their underpowered hardware always run smoothly.

Apple's releases don't have anything to do with when Apple wants it. Even if Apple wanted to release Mac refreshes every 2 months they wouldn't not be able to because of the availability of updates. What exactly are you hoping for them to update in their iMac line?

You want apple to release something faster than an i7 that does not exists? Since when did buying a product become about the looks rather than function. You sound just like one of those first year university students that buy Apple products because that look nice.

Whats stopping Apple putting the same specs as the Galaxy S3 into the next iPhone? Surely the iOS software would be even better if it had the S3 specs? The only reason they don't is because they like to hold back features and functions so they can then use them as selling points in the next upgrade. Basically everyone will complain its not on the phone, then when they add it in in the next generation everybody loves it.

I'm not asking for bi monthly updates. It's not too much to ask for them to add updates every 6 months i.e. speed bumps etc. As for hopeful updates the next iMac should have the following; thinner design, shorter chin, Blu-ray rw drive, USB 3.0, quad core i7 as standard across the range, 8gb RAM minimum. This is not too much to ask for considering the price of macs. Apple even sit on the council for Blu ray yet they won't use it in their own products. Let's face it since the switch to Intel the mac is just a PC in a nicer looking shell. The only difference is it runs OS X. Hence the premium they charge is no longer justified.

As for buying Apple for looks welcome to 95% of the companies customer base. Everybody buys Apple for how the product looks. I personally buy for both it's looks and the fact OS X is so simple and a pleasure to use. But the majority of its customers from my experience judging from what I see in its stores don't even know what is inside the mac. They are buying purely for its looks and the fact they have an iPhone which has turned them to the mac.

Perhaps I wasn't being clear. Sorry if I wasn't. Every app can be adjusted to display more or less content vertically or horizontally. That isn't the issue, the issue is whether you can make one app that fits both the regular screen and the screen that is longer vertically. It seems to me you will have to distort one of those images, but if I'm wrong, explain to me how to avoid this. If that's the case, anyone who carefully crafts the layout and images to fit a specific screen wouldn't be happy to have the image distorted to fit another device. They will have to make adjustments.

Now, perhaps your solution is to package two apps. The developer just quickly adds more vertical or horizontal space/content to the second package. The result then is that every time we search for iPhone apps we have to sort out the ones that are compatible and designed for 3.5" iPhones and those designed for 4.x" iPhones. That would make the App store even more of a nightmare to wade through. "Ah but you can create universal bundles that recognize the device being used". Ok but now you have bloated packages that contain all permutations, which increases the size of all the apps considerably.

I'm just not seeing how this will work. Explain it to me slowly and clearly, and I'll happily recant if you make a persuasive case.

Aluminum, Glass or Plastic, it all simply boils down to personal preference. Quality wise, there too, is not much difference if any.

Environmentally are they all equal too? Or is it easier to recycle glass and aluminum?

thunderbolt would be overkill plus unless there's a way to go thunderbolt to USB they would be restricting to wifi sync only or Mac computers since Windows ones haven't picked up TB yet. At the least they would get huge bad press especially in the EU where USB based connectors are required (specifically micro usb as I recall) to perhaps anti-trust claims.

so given that it is overkill I don't see them doing it at this point. perhaps in 2-3 years of TB is way more widespread

----------

As if to say "We have the most ideal design, there is no reason to change."

Agreed. It does feel like they have their winning design with the iPhone 4 series. So the real changes would be internal. any external change would be to serve that goal. For example if making the dock connector smaller means they could put in another chip set for greater universal use, then yes they might do it. But if it is just to have a smaller dock connector, not likely.

----------

**** will hit the fan if Apple doesn't redesign the next iPhone.

no joke. whatever will samsung copy then.

----------

Going forward, I see the 32 pin dock connector as primarily a power port. Everything is wireless now. I haven't plug my iPhone into my MacBook in about a month, and will likely never will again.

we are not yet at the point where everyone has wifi nets in their homes or even computers that can use wifi without buying a dongle to dangle off the computer.

until we reach that point no sane company will make that the only option for syncing. Once we do reach it then why not just go to a micro usb plug for power and make the EU etc thrilled about the elimination of the adapter that makes the iPhone in compliance with local laws

----------

My guess is the new iPhone will take a similar look to the iPad.

And by similar look that will likely mean ditching the iPhone all together and just having everyone do VOIP off their iPads and (rumored) iPad minis.

You think you look Jersey Shore now with your bluetooth in your ear all the time, wait until you add the man purse for your 10 inch 'phone'

This is my pet peeve regarding Apple at the moment. Why don't they just make the best smartphone they can make and not hold back features. The same applies to the mac side of their business. Give the customer what they want, which at this moment in time would be a new iphone with the usual iconic Apple design with the internals of the Galaxy S3.

The next iPhone will not be a mirror image of the iPhone 4/4S. Bank on it.

No thank you. Aside from the fact that Apple never promised to redesign the phone every 1-2 years, even if they had that was Steve Jobs Apple and that company is dead. Frankly we can't use anything in the past to really guess how the world turns in Cupe. Sure Jony is still there but who knows if he thinks the design is perfect and has no plans to really change it other than perhaps thinner glass when it exists, maybe a change to the antenna band as needed for new chip sets etc. Or if he hates the current design and wants to go back to the original one and now has that power.

----------

I don't buy this story for two reasons:

1). I think there would be an uproar if the device's design didn't change

disagree. the only uproar will be sites like this. to the common public all they care about is price, value and if it works.

and LTE capability wasn't added.

agree.

I'm sure Apple has had the design locked in for some time.

Most likely. after all they will probably show off a few bits of it as WWDC since the iOS 6 betas will reveal details and Apple hates to not say it first. Then within the month they will start building the units to have supply for a Sept/Oct launch.

OMG - Jony going rogue!

Why Thunderbolt when USB3 will probably be the norm on PC and Mac in the next refresh?

Apple created Thunderbolt (well helped to) because they felt it was the better choice than USB3 which they haven't supported in their computers to date and don't seem to be planning to.

----------

It will probably mean replacing all of the iPhone cords I already have
but at least I'll be able to use anyone's phone charger from here on out, that will actually be quite convenient.

Or not. Part of the issue with the whole Micro USB standard is that it is power only. Not power and data. The world isn't ready to be forced into wifi sync as the only option and Apple is smart enough to know this

interesting use of the word "choice"

Apple created Thunderbolt (well helped to) because they felt it was the better choice than USB3 which they haven't supported in their computers to date and don't seem to be planning to.

Funny, since Intel is pushing USB 3.0 *and* T-Bolt - two different connectors for two different use cases.

And, of course, the Ivy Bridge chipset includes USB 3.0, but it does not include T-Bolt.

Apple computer users should hope that Tim Cook's Apple quickly reverses the pig-headed decisions of the old regime.

Apple is planning on implementing a new, smaller dock connector,

Oh boy. Get ready for the next wave of Apple ADAPTERS sold at $10-20 a pop (maybe more) so you can use the devices you already bought with the new iPhones/iPods/iPads.

They couldn't use an industry standard connector like mini-usb. They've always got to use propriety connectors so developers can pay them big $$$ to license "compatible" accessories.

So if this new iPhone doesn't have at least a 4" screen people will leave iOS for Android or Windows instead?

a few blowhard types might but the general public, nope. They are after all just sheep willing to buy whatever Apple tosses at them.

----------

Eh? The device is a mobile phone remember that.

Yep.

Time to start a new rumor.

The new iPhone will only function as a phone. no more apps, no more safari etc. You can call, text and take photos same as basically every 'dumb' feature phone. It won't be bigger but in fact smaller with a mere 2.5" screen.

You want the rest, get an iPad. After all, bigger is better and at 9.7" you can't get better.

----------

Wasn't there something that said Steve Jobs had approved the design of the next iPhone before he passed away last year?

so they say. But then again, we don't know if that 'next' iPhone is the one for this year or if it is merely a spec bump again. We might not see that next iPhone design for 2-3 more years

----------

Picture it - Sarah Palin and Jony Ive going "rogue" and upsetting everything....

works for me. so long as they post the video up on youtube.

I don't think I've bashed plastic in this thread so that's probably another poster. But to give my two cents. I have mixed feelings of use plastic. On one hand plastic can be very durable as numerous Nokia phones have proven, and you can build high quality device out of cheap feeling material - Samsung is a good example of this. They use some of cheapest feeling material for their flagship phones but they do a very good job in fit and finish whereas HTC tends to use nice feeling products but fall short in fit and finish in comparison.

Regardless I personally want my device to feel really nice in hand and look pretty too. Otherwise I'll just buy a waterproof phone everytime no matter how ugly it is. But then again plastic is usually much more practical than other material for a phone. I guess this is where liquid metal was supposed to fill the gap?
