**** will hit the fan if Apple doesn't redesign the next iPhone.

For sure! I highly doubt that these guys are correct that nothing is being changed in size or material. The next iPhone will have the enhancements that we users are asking for. There has to be a reason to get the next model and updated cameras won't cut it.

Well, two things i love about these "rumors" are that people are either SO opposed to a larger screen, or so FOR a larger screen, no one seems to want to mention that perhaps apple could run two iPhones side by side , a large, samsung galaxy SII or SIII sized iPhone, along side a similar to the existing iPhone 4s, that way they could release a new large phone , with a small doc connecter etc that was to big to fit into many accessories etc(whilst still introducing a new doc connector and giving third parties time to make new equipment for it), and keep the smaller phone with the existing doc connector in it for people with all the mac-centric hi-fi equipment and in car stereos .

I seriously doubt Apple would unveil two new different smartphone models (remember those 4S and 5 rumors last fall?) and if by some chance they did they would not use different dock connectors.

If they change the connector on the next iPhone, they will of course also offer a $29 adapter.

A A5X CPU and a 12MP camera? Even though it's not about the Megapixel, just do what Nokia did and put a 41MP camera in the next iPhone, then forget about it for the next couple of iterations.

Given Apple's move towards discontinuing products to reduce/streamline their inventory, I find it hard to believe that they would create 2 phones of different sizes. It's just possible they will for the iPad but even then I'm sceptical.

Given that I believe Apple have an adaptor for the micro USB charging port in Europe, it wouldn't be too hard to do the same to convert a new connector port to fit existing docking devices

a bigger screen makes sense I cant fathom why some of you want the phone to remain at an outdated size of 3.5. I know of another company that didn't continually advance their product and look where they are at. (RIM)

RIM actually tried hard to advance their products. Their efforts include the first full touch screen BlackBerry with Storm back in 2008. Plus they released a number of different form factors over the years including Storm successors and Playbook which had a completely new operating system.

It's not that RIM didn't try to continually advance their products. It's just they were terrible at successful implementation of new ideas and lacked focus. If we are to use RIM as the example, Apple should hold on making devices of different sizes and form factors until they are completely polished.

Great. I've collected a number of chargers and cables and they make my life easy since I can leave one in the office, have one in my bag, have one in my study and so forth. This is going to be an inconvenience. Oh well.

Hello HTC One S. That samsung gs3 thing is waaaay to ugly to be seen with. its been a nice ride iphone, hopefully in the future we will meet again.

Wow that would suck so bad. I have so many docks and ihomes. I would really lose alot of money if I had to buy all new docks.

I'd like to see a little bit bigger screen, bring back the tapered sides so it's more comfortable to hold,

I guess you never place the iPhone on its side to watch a video? The flat edge of the current design is not only iconic but useful. I think the current iPhone form factor is timeless -- like the Porsche 911. I can see Apple keeping the current form factor though perhaps lighter and thinner plus a larger iPhone as well. The market is now large enough for two current models much like Apple offers several Mac notebooks.

Thunderbolt is not designed to fill the role of USB. It's made to cover the niche market of high speed data transferring such as external SDD's, HDD's, external GPU's/Apple Cinema Display and other things of that nature.

Transferring data to any iOS device via Thunderbolt, is not beneficial to anyone?
Other things of that nature = any iOS device.
They have flash storage, batteries to power hi-resolution displays that are packaged in a small volume, and there is the need to transfer data fast.

I would like to believe that with newer technology, like Thunderbolt, there is potential to provide more electrical power and allow the possibility to charge the batteries faster that with USB.

And as other stated, also using a mag-safe type of connector.

It's not because the flash storage on the iPhone/iPad is nowhere near fast enough to take advantage of USB 3, nevermind TB.

I don't mind if the dock connector is smaller or not, I'd rather they focus on implementing a new Thunderbolt connector for the iPhone (and all iDevices in the future). They need to push on it a bit more, and what better way than with their own products? Make it the standard.

Gooooooooood idea. And it's very likely to happen, given the tremendous amount of power draw TBolt uses (they had to scale it down in some of their laptops), and how much space and processing power it requires. Oh, and the expense.

Get real. Also, get realistic... what the hell reason is there for TBolt on an iPhone?

By that logic, in the next decade, Apple will eventually change everything in the iPhone except the Dock Connector? Doubt it. At some point, Apple will change the Dock Connector. (ex. Look what they did to the Floppy, Legacy Ports, DVD). They aren't afraid to disrupt things.

Terrible analogies, but true nonetheless.

And you're just too darned precious to use the adapter that would obviously be available?

Mechanical problems and very likely damage would be the result.

Typically docks are designed so that you plug in the iDevice and it stands upright. Now imagine what an adapter would look like if the Dock connector is smaller. The adapter would slot on the existing dock, then a smaller dock sticks out and the iDevice is plugged into that smaller dock. That is a mechanical nightmare.

I just wanna know what's gonna be inside the next iPhone. iOS 6 has to make some pretty innovative changes in my opinion.

Failure to do so could lead to an interesting future at Apple...

I love my iPhone (and iPad), but I am going to try out an Android phone if the new iPhone doesn't have a bigger screen. I just feel that if they don't up the size now with all the rumors of a larger screen and all the competition from Android with larger screens, then they never will, and I'm tired of waiting.

Once I tried a 4 inch screen, I could never go back (downgrade) to 3.5.

Dock connector, as that's what this article is about...

Well, then isn't it obvious what the advantage would be? Smaller port = less area for dust to accumulate.

----------

For a Magsafe connector to work the attached device needs to be sufficiently heavy for the magsafe to disconnect instead of dragging the device.

Laptops are, phones aren't.

That can be accomodated through the use of weaker magnets.
