this is hilarious, apple has no other angle here, releasing the same 2017 iphone 8 with a improved chip, still too big, per steve jobs- iphone 5 size is perfect for use with one hand, steve never would have increased the physical size of the iphone 5, imagine a iphone 5 size with a edge to edge screen, my dream phone

A smarter strategy would have been to show a New User using Geekbench on their new 2nd-Gen SE, & showing/looking-at those results !

iPhone12,8

Size2.88 GB
If they were trying to sell the phone to geeks on this forum sure show that geek score. The average customer doesn’t care about the geek bench score. Believe it or not the average customer does care about how Apple packages their products.

Steve was a great man but he wasn’t always right about what most customers want. If it was up to him the iPad would’ve never been a thing

'Lots to love. Less to spend.'

Somehow this iPhone SE ad tag line reminds me of the old ones of the old Macintosh ads: 'It does more. It costs less. It's that simple.'

"Macintosh®. It does more, it costs less, it's that simple."

I'm just mildly horrified at the amount of packaging that the average Apple device comes with.

Plastic wrapping the power brick seems too much. Over the years, I've cringed opening up a new Apple device. *shrug* At least they have recently changed to largely recyclable materials where they can. Still... *sigh*

Would you rather it arrive scratched up?

Amazing what people will complain about.

The above comment is based on the assumption that the market doesn't change. You have no idea what "Steve" would've done, or not done.

It's funny how people keep harping on this.

Even back when I got my brand new iPhone 5 which increased the screen size slightly, I wished that Apple had gone with a slightly larger screen. I wasn't fully happy with my phone's screen size until I got my iPhone 6.

Now, everyone is different but I still remember the MASSIVE increase of sales when the iPhone 6 came out. People wanted a bigger screen; the 6 was the first iPhone I had where I felt the screen was finally big enough. Typing was so much easier and apps felt nicely spread out.

There seems to be a few 4" phone die hards, and I feel kinda bad that you no longer have a phone that makes you happy, but the new 4.7" SE isn't that much bigger, still fits in 99% of pockets and is a great compromise. I bet if you use one for a while you'll get used to it and won't feel like it's too big after a bit.

When people don't read spec sheets.

You wonder the psychology that goes into it. Perhaps because this might be the first phone most buy since their last SE? I know my 2016 SE has lasted me four years, and I expect my new SE to last me that long...this might be my only new phone purchase in an eight-year span! There's something decadent about buying a new piece of tech.

No one can resist picking a scab. :)

I still hope they will release the SE Plus, just because the battery life. There was some evidence it might be coming, but I'm afraid the XR is the "new SE plus" for Apple. Or they might discontinue the XR, release the 12 (two sizes), 12 Pro (two sizes) and add SE plus = it would actually cleanup the product line nicely = only 2020 models, in all price categories.

What a shame they didn't try to put a bigger battery in this SE. At least 15-20% bigger. I have 6s and the battery life was not good since day one.

Steve Jobs is dead for about 9 years. Tim Cook is now running the company. Nobody can know, unless they can reach across the ether, what Steve Jobs might have done in 2020.

It’s true, it is satisfying to appeal that outward plastic layer off the iPhone. For some odd reason, I always find myself keeping the plastic layer, if I end up reselling the phone, I actually will reapply the plastic the best I can, it’s been a ‘selling point’ for some customers to see how well I have taken care of the iPhone.

Wouldn't it be more green to purchase a gently used phone instead of new? ;)

All seriousness, I agree there are likely additional ways Apple could reduce it's impact on the environment. Why that brick needs a plastic sheath is beyond me.

Every time someone mentions Steve Jobs like Apple ended when he died I think of this picture

Wait I’m using a 6s...you mean I’m suppose to peel off the protective film? Lol

While I totally agree with you (I'd love to see the unnecessary wrapping of accessories reduced) you got to know that there are many people would then say Apple is putting in second-hand parts because some adaptor has a scratch it got in transit.

Apple, I'm iPhone SE xually frustrated that you think 4.7" is small. My wife doesn't think so, she complains all night that it doesn't fit inside her pocket. She says it's too tight to fit. Reconsider calling it small, right now. SMH

At the very least it's medium sized, and I'm proud of having a 4.7" display. I'm satisfied

Its not about the market. Steve never cared about the market.
Hand sizes and optimum ergonomics doesnt change
