this is hilarious, apple has no other angle here, releasing the same 2017 iphone 8 with a improved chip, still too big, per steve jobs- iphone 5 size is perfect for use with one hand, steve never would have increased the physical size of the iphone 5, imagine a iphone 5 size with a edge to edge screen, my dream phone
steve would have never released itunes for windows but was eventually persuaded to do so. bigger phones would have been a reality under steve.

Its not about the market. Steve never cared about the market.
Hand sizes and optimum ergonomics doesnt change

The fact that "Steve never cared about the market" is silly at best. He was the CEO of a company, not an idiot. He didn't base his decisions entirely on the existing market, but that's a different thing than "never cared about the market".

He died in 2011, almost 9 years ago. All the input that he would've received in the 9 years and that he couldn't receive would've drastically changed his decision making (unless you think that he was an idiot). You have no idea if he would've fallen in love with the iPhone XS Pro design because he never had any opportunity to actually see it, test it, try it. You can't extrapolate his decision 9 years after his death. He would be a different man today (like everyone else).

Heck, his entire Stanford speech is about the evolution of an individual, esp. through unexpected circumstances.

But what's in the box that could scratch it?
Just it moving around it can scratch. It doesn’t have to be a deep scratch but even micro scratches would be unacceptable for a new product. Companies don’t put this film over products just because it looks cool. These phones are shipped all the way from China and are bounced around quite a bit. Apple is all about using recyclable packaging in the least amount necessary. If Apple products came in scratched you would have people on these forms saying Apple is trying to save a half a penny in packaging to make a profit. You can’t please everyone but what you can do is deliver a good product in good condition. That’s what Apple does

Would you rather it arrive scratched up?

Amazing what people will complain about.

What's in the box that could scratch it? Seriously! Is there barbed wire I didn't see?

Apple could use a lot more different things than plastic wrap that is not biodegradable. They could use a biodegradable fabric pouch for instance. I just cleaned up my basement and tossed a lot of old product boxes. Apple has made improvements in their packaging, but they could do more. I tossed a few Heuer watch boxes too. I bought a 'Sports Elegance' back in the 90's, and the box was small, and mostly cardboard. The last two watches I bought had horrible unrecyclable boxes. I was horrified, and didn't pay much attention to the boxes when I bought the watches. Their packaging has gotten incredibly worse. Watching (drooling over) the New New Mac Pro unboxings, I see HUGE waste in their packaging. Probably worse than the original Mac Pro I have. It's frustrating. We had a company that recycled packing styrofoam, but they went out because it 'wasn't profitable'. If peace was profitable, maybe we'd have more of that.

Just frustrated, can you tell...

@yaxomoxay is right that we've no idea what Steve Jobs would or would not have released product-wise at this point.

But I too find the dimensions of the original SE to be my idea of the "dream phone" and I did buy an Apple-refurb 128GB one to supplant my 64GB one, after discovering that my XR while a wonderful device, was just too hefty and large to be toting around as a phone, so that became a WiFi only device that I use preferentially to a tablet at home about 60% of the time. Meanwhile I'd got used to having more storage on a phone so the 128GB SE appealed to me in the refurb shelves.

If the new SE had same external dimensions of the old one I'd have to chain myself to the bed last night to keep from getting into the preorder activity. As it is I just keep reminding myself I'm more in need of a new laptop than another darn phone.

I love that ad though. I do slowly savor unboxing any Apple device, right down to taking the wrap off the charger...

Apple used to have problems with scratching at the factory. There was a point in time (see macrumors) where there were micro scratches on the screen/back, presumably from the factory or from random jostling of the product inside the box (dust, you know).

Minor, but when you get the brand new device you want it to be mint.

Agreed it doesn’t take much to put micro scratches on aluminum or even stainless steel. Are people really worried about that Apple uses probably less plastic than on a single soda bottle cap. I’m guessing these people don’t drink milk, bottled water, any kind of package cheese or meat, crackers or anything else. At most people buy a phone once a year. If you’re that worried just recycle the packaging. The amount of packaging that you get on your phone once a year isn’t even in the same realm of the amount of packaging do you use in your day-to-day life. Also the components of the phone have a much more significant environmental impact than the phone packaging itself. If you’re really concerned about the environmental impact keep your phone for 4-5 years

Oddly satisfying? Give me a break. It is just someone opening a cell ph... *watches video*

That was oddly satisfying. Bravo, MacRumors.

Thank you. I don’t why people insult Steve and think he wouldn’t be open to changes or adapting to what’s going on in the world. People really think if he was alive that Apple would still only be making exclusively 4” iPhones.

Wait, a commercial for the new SE? Was there ever a commercial for the original SE? I don’t recall so, backed up by the fact that no one I’ve ever met has heard of the original SE (except for the very few people who actually owned one).

They should have named it iPhone HC (healthcare) for all of us who now wear masks all day and have forced long passwords, need my touch ID back

You must mean the very few million folks who own an original SE, and at that you'd be severely understating the case. Well anyway now you sorta know someone who still owns two of the original ones.

small is good in my book.jpg

Yeah, some of us do just prefer a smaller phone. So, Apple's been smart enough to keep one in the lineup. I only wish the SE 2 retained the exact external dimensions of the original!

I don't know if there were any official Apple commercials for the original SE (there are some fan-made fake ones though, mostly based on stills taken off the keynote) but the keynote itself in March certainly featured it... starting at around the 30min mark.

I’ll never understand how removing the protective film is satisfying.

The go-to saying for tech youtubers 🙄

Nothing strange about the ad. All about the attainable one-off experience of that unboxing moment, more attainable at its competitive price point point.

Technically very well executed too.

? But I don’t know those few million people... I have two original SEs myself, as I am a small phone user, but like I said, I’ve only ever met a few other people who owned one. Nobody else I’ve met has even heard of it because Apple did not advertise them (I believe).

That’s because you don’t know what it’s like to be rich and materialistic 🙄 if you were rich like me you would understand...
