The SE really is a confusing product. It looks about 8 years old at this point but is a good design. If apple just removed 99% of the bezel from this design it would look better than the iPhone X.

The key to a successful SE is it should be small, have a great camera and no bezels at all, Touch ID on the back. Be super cheap with a lower powered cpu for longer battery life.

The SE really should stand for Small Edition only. Not Cheap Edition where it currently stands.

I certainly don't need Taptic or haptic feedback, if they put the Touch ID on reverse and use swipe to home instead. Also no need for force touch either, both represent large amounts of internal space and huge costs for no real benefit.
The SE is already a successful product with a loyal following. For those it is targeted at it is NOT confusing. One reason why some may be confused is that they see the iPhone lineup as if all of the models are targeting everyone.

There is no longer one monolithic customer group. There are now two. Value and Premier. Whether it is the iPhone SE or iPad 2018 there are some who are experiencing a sort of emotional uneasiness over Apple customers parting ways into one of those two paths. Some see people they respect take the path other than the one that they're on and second guess themselves if they shouldn't follow. Or they give a defense for why they're staying on the path they're already on.

Rather than "the key to a successful SE" it is "the iPhone that @alexgowers wants". ;) That's fine! But to claim that the SE can only be successful if it meets your requirements, well...:eek::)

Given the article from a few days ago on the profitability of various smartphones, the SE might have a loyal following but its contribution to Apple's bottom line is close to a rounding error. It might act as a gateway 'drug' to get people into the iOS ecosystem and it might help Apple to establish some critical mass in less rich countries like India.

Unfortunately for me, the lack of a headphone jack would probably be a deal-breaker. Luckily I still have an SE that I'm perfectly happy with and can hopefully keep it for a considerable time. The number of setups I have that utilize the headphone jack is just too overwhelming to contemplate having to rely on a dongle for all those systems. Plus other problems with using a dongle while doing specific activities. For example, when skiing it is cold, cold = dead bluetooth headphone batteries = must use standard headphones = would need a dongle = phone with dongle won't fit in my inner-fleece phone pocket that keeps phone near body for warmth while skiing and still allow me to zip the pocket = can't use phone while skiing without buying new skiing fleece shirt = Apple doesn't really seem to think much about their customer's needs any longer.

IDK, I think the primary market is "people who don't want a big phone." That's what it is for me. Heck, I was going to jump to Android this last upgrade, but ended up sticking with the iPhone specifically because of the iPhone SE size (at the time I was absolutely unable to find a powerful Android device in a size I wanted).

What a wonderfully not well-thought, shallow post! No matter its market possibilities in India and other poor countries, the SE is a success in the USA. Without that need for the form-factor, Apple wouldn't have "introduced" the line-up; it was and is doing very well with Android-clone series 6 onward.

If it weren’t for the price and size of the se, our family of three wouldn’t have smartphone plans but instead still have two $3 a month flip phone plans.

Just recently I looked for an android equivalent and found slightly bigger for 1/2 the money but there were lots of complaints on quality. I think sony is/has come out with something small but I’m not a fan of sony. The SE just fits the bill. Finding them used is pretty hard.

Get Airpods. I even paired it with my PC and been using it on Windows 10 with no issues. Apparently it even works well on Android phones
Apple's AirPods may be the best Bluetooth earbuds for Android <--- on www.androidcentral.com
Yeah but man, they hurt my ears. No silicone, not going there.

The A10X won’t be appearing in any iPhone - it’s designed for the larger thermal envelope of iPads, doesn’t have the RAM on board (so you’d have to find space elsewhere on the logic board) and the GPU isn’t nerfed to make an 1,800mAh battery sufficient to run it for more than a couple of hours...

Thank you for the info, I did not know about the thermal factor. This reinforces my belief that the next 4" iPhone will have the A11, mainly because it has to be relevant even three or four years from now. Getting impatient with the renewal speed of this line by Apple because I just bought two SEs - needs must.

After my wife outgrew the 16GB on her iPhone 5s, I got her the first SE with 64GB of memory. It's been a really great phone and continues to be after almost 2 years of usage. I'm hopeful Apple keeps a "small" iPhone for sale for quite a long while.I could see me purchasing another (newer) SE for her next year or whenever she's dropped it enough times to finally break it (thank you Otterbox for the past 34 shatter-free drops).

That aren't compatible with any other device I own either. I don't get why people have such a hatred for the headphone jack, if you don't use it, great. But a lot of people still do and the dongle is a ****** solution to a problem that didn't need to exist.

I don’t have a hatred for it, I just don’t care. If people are this upset about it, there are other phone makers they have it. I just don’t want government saying all cell phone makers must have the headphone jack.

100 year old technology that still sounds better than bluetooth junk.

And lightning port that sounds better than 100 year old technology junk.

No headphone jack because the 3rd world target market for this dumbed down device is clamoring for bluetooth earbuds.

Well, as a recent iPhone SE owner, I simply love this 4`` small Phone. Despite having owning 3 iMac Desktop Computers using Safari, this is my first non-android Phone. I took the leap of faith based on virtually everyone i know is using or has switched from Android to an iPhone. My main reason for switching was finding a 4`` Phone Screen! Unfortunately, the smallest currently available 4.5`` Screen happens to be a LG K3, a cheap unlocked Phone available at Best Buy for $70 or Free through a PrePaid Carrier Plan or through Verizon. So much for choices of small screen Phones. So far, the SE is my favorite Phone to date. SE2? Doubt it. For my minimal needs, this iPhone SE will fill my cellular requirements for the next few years or until I lose or damage it. Cheers

Been calling this for awhile. I think the new SE will basically look like a shrunken down iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. Love it or hate it, the iPhone 5S design is now dated, and it would be a no-brainer for Apple to bring the SE's design in line with the rest of the iPhone lines...

The iPhone 6/7/8 design was lifted directly from the iPod Touch 5G which came out back in 2012. It's not particularly fresh either.

I’d like to see the SE2 get a larger screen while keeping the overall size the same/similar. For me, the 4” screen is a bit too small, but the overall size is near perfect. I would think this is doable by reducing the top/bottom chins. Like others have mentioned, I think this phone would be a very attractive option for many.

Personally, I do not use the headphone jack as I find the convenience of wireless worth the added cost. But they can keep it there for those that want/use it. Not getting in the middle of that debate..

The provided dongle is absolutely no solution - what happens when you switch headphones from phone to laptop say....do you leave the dongle hanging from your $1000 phone? Or do you put it in your pocket until you can lose it?

You can do whatever you like with it. Your choice.

No one is satisfied with using a dongle to use 3.5mm headphones.

No one should be losing their minds over the topic either.

Saying "switch to android" might be the most ridiculous suggestion ever.....Why don't I sell my house and live in my car because I don't like the view from my window?!?

Either way, it would be your choice. Nobody is entitled to a good view or a phone with a headphone jack.

No one alive can justify the removal of that headphone jack for anything other than profit, and I challenge anyone to attempt to do so.

But you’re ignoring that nobody needs to justify anything. You’re acting like Apple should be compelled to manufacture a phone with a headphone jack. It’s their choice to do so, and it’s your choice to purchase or not. They don’t owe you anything.

I’m fine with the headphone jack removal if it means I get a Taptic Engine and waterproofing. Also, I’d like updated LCD tech (better saturation and sunlight visibility) and stronger glass (the SE scratched way too easily).

14 pages and almost 350 comments actually shocks me the amount of activity this thread pulled in. This go to shows you the passion for the iPhone SE and those who really do want to see it continue to exist. Should be interesting to see the next six months if we do see a refresh or not.

I have a day one iPhone 6. I’ve been waiting for the SE 2.
I’m ready. I hope iPad mini gets an upgrade too.

Why the war on the headphone jack? Just because some hipster declares the headphone jack "no longer trendy", it causes 99% of headphones in the world to be instantly obsolete (without bulky dongle). Makes no sense unless your agenda is to push wireless headphones and dongles.
Was already thinking of buying the existing SE to replace my 4S. Now I'll wait and see if the headphone jack is gone on the new SE. If it is I'll buy the old SE. If the HPJ is still there, will buy the new one. Apple please give us a choice and keep the HPJ on at least one of your models!!!

Perhaps we should ditch the wheel and find something better? That is so Stone Age...

Cones in speakers have been around forever! Let's bin that junk and think of something new!

Old does not equal bad.

To your next point, the choice of port is entirely irrelevant to sound 'quality'. No-one who bought an iPod every complained about the damn port making their music sound bad. No-one.

But if you'd like to compare ports....

Lightning is an expensive proprietary, single-company port. It doesn't rotate so twists cables reducing lifespan.

3.5mm is a cheap, universal standard connector used in products the world over. It rotates 360 degrees relieving cable stress.

You have no argument.

Glad to see you're as much of a fan of consumer choice as I am. In that sense, I think we're singing from the same hymn sheet.

I wish apple had not removed my choice to use either wired or wireless headphones.

To simultaneously remove core functionality, while increasing prices, strikes me as extremely user-hostile, and no-one in their right mind should support it. It takes advantage of apple's loyal user base who are in some sense 'locked in' - financially/emotionally invested in the ecosystem.

It benefits no consumer, ever, and only benefits any company who does it.
