Dang, someone has high exceptions. Apple has to keep the cost down somehow. A10 would be fine for this particular device, though.

With a lower resolution display to drive, this thing should put up some good performance numbers even on year-old hardware. I don't think a last-gen chip is in any way a dealbreaker.

I'd expect an updated SE with Qi charging and I'm afraid the headphone jack will go away.
A10 could be the SoC, there is no dual camera and the resolution isn't high so it can be pretty fast with an A10, no need for the A11 unless they want to make it more future proof. Remember it is the cheapest option, so they have to sacrifice something we can't expect the latest and greatest camera and cpu

First SE gave you exactly this.
Camera and SoC directly out of 6s half a year after it's release.

New SE will give you one and a half year old tech.

Been calling this for awhile. I think the new SE will basically look like a shrunken down iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. Love it or hate it, the iPhone 5S design is now dated, and it would be a no-brainer for Apple to bring the SE's design in line with the rest of the iPhone lines.

If they do actually do this, I will seriously consider getting rid of my huge 7 Plus. I used an iPhone 5S before I bought a 7 Plus, and I miss the smaller size.

Not sure this article and everyone else is saying it will have an A10. The original SE uses the same A9 processor as the 6S which was released just months prior to the SE. It will most likely be the same this time around and will use the A11 from the 8. It is more power efficient after all and they can tout that as an added benefit.

Can't wait. I'm using a 5S with a dying battery and love everything about this form factor. Not everyone needs a big screen since some of us really just use the phones for calls and texts and occasional passive app usage. My 5S spends most of its time in a pocket while playing music.

I use BT headphones 75% of the time so losing the headphone jack won't affect me much but I can see why others would object. There would have to be significant gains in battery or performance to make removing it worthwhile.

Not making this phone full screen is a missed opportunity by Apple, I believe.

I prefer to operate phones one handed and have normal sized male hands.

Even I struggle to reach the top left corner (right if you’re left handed) on the iPhone 6/7/8 series models - never mind the Plus versions.

My Mum has an SE however (on my recommendation) and loves it.

Keeping the body the same size but making it full screen would allow all but people with the smallest hands to operate this phone single handedly.

It would also open it up to a wider customer base - including perhaps me as someone who has always bought flagships but now questions the value proposition of $1000 plus iPhones.

PS - shame it’s losing the Jack too, but that’s the way the industry has moved sadly.

Proof?

Original reports said the SE would get an A8 chip, but it ended up getting the up to date A9. Same could happen here.
My only proof is logic. They aren't going to put the A11 in it with almost 6 months to go before flagship phones have the A12. iPhone X has the A11 right and SE will have it next month? No.

Apple will start differentiating their phones based partly on their phenomenal silicon.

Apple, make an iPhone se with oled in the same form factor priced at $749 and I’ll buy it. I have an iPhone X and I like it but I really want to have the smaller physical size with the iPhone X treatment. Repeat: not a budget phone but a premium smaller device.

Apple will release an updated iPhone SE in May, according to case makers who spoke with Japanese website Mac Otakara at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics trade show in Hong Kong this week.

The case makers said the second-generation model will retain the same physical size as the current iPhone SE, and Touch ID is expected to remain, suggesting the device will continue to have a four-inch display sandwiched between top and bottom bezels for the home button, camera, and earpiece.

Following in the footsteps of the iPhone 7 and beyond, the case makers do not expect the new iPhone SE to have a 3.5mm headphone jack. If accurate, and with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus likely to be discontinued in September, Apple would no longer sell any iPhone model with a headphone jack.

Also like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the new iPhone SE will supposedly be powered by Apple's last-generation A10 Fusion chip, up to 40 percent faster than the A9 processor in the current iPhone SE. The chip will likely enable support for the HEIF image format and HEVC video compression standard.

The report speculates that the new iPhone SE may have a glass back with wireless charging capabilities, like the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, but evidence is said to be inconclusive at this time.

It's unclear how and where the case makers obtained this information, but they are likely compelled to dig up details from the supply chain in order to be first to the market with properly fitting cases and accessories.

Earlier this week, Apple filed several unreleased iPhone models with the Eurasian Economic Commission, as legally required, and this action has often foreshadowed product launches. Apple submitted a new tablet to the database in February, for example, and the new 9.7-inch iPad debuted in March.

If history repeats itself, the regulatory filings in April do lend credence to a new iPhone SE debuting next month. DigiTimes also predicted May or June. Apple has only debuted new products in May twice in the past five years, including the fifth-generation iPod touch in 2013 and a refreshed 15-inch MacBook Pro in 2015.

WWDC 2018 in June could also provide Apple with stage time to introduce the new iPhone SE, but that hasn't happened since the iPhone 4 in 2010. A press release in May could be more fitting if the update is insignificant.

iPhone SE rumors have been all over the map in recent months. A sketchy report from Chinese website QQ.com, for example, claimed the second-generation model will have a larger 4.2-inch display, Touch ID, A10 Fusion chip, 2GB of RAM, and metal back and frame, available with 32GB or 128GB of storage.

Apple is likely most focused on making under-the-hood improvements to the iPhone SE, as the device is now outdated by a few years. At its $349 price point, its new design is unlikely to resemble the iPhone X.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who relays information from Apple's supply chain in Asia, recently cast some doubt on rumors about a second-generation iPhone SE launching in the second quarter of 2018.

If there really is a so-called iPhone SE 2 on Apple's roadmap, Kuo expects it will have few outward-facing changes. He predicts the device would likely have a faster processor and a lower price, rather than iPhone X-like features like a nearly full screen design, 3D sensing for Face ID, or wireless charging.

The current iPhone SE looks much like the iPhone 5s, including its smaller four-inch display preferred by a subset of customers. The device is powered by Apple's A9 chip, like the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and it has 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Touch ID.

Apple hasn't fully refreshed the iPhone SE since it launched in March 2016, but it did double its available storage capacities to 64GB and 128GB in March 2017. It also dropped the device's starting price to $349 last September.

Seriously, where can I purchase a 64GB SE you mention in the article? All I can find are 32GB and 128GB models.....

the storage went from 16 and 64GB to 32 (not 64) and 128GB

the SE refresh sounds interesting .. this could be mine

Thanks for the reminder. I had forgotten that change. I hated that move. 64GB is the sweet spot for the SE, IMO.

If Apple believes in a wireless future, they have to include a pair of wireless headphones at some point.
It would have to be so cheap that it's only real use is landfill. Apple should stop including chargers and wired headphones and lower their retail price to the cost of manufacturing +10%. How many 5w iPhone chargers have passed thru your hands and into the recycle bin?

Isn't this design/form factor about 6 years old at this point? I guess Apple doesn't have enough R&D money or creativity to come up with a new design that satisfies that small screen crowd. Unreal with these greedy bean counters.
