I'm somewhat surprised that people still care this much about the 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple includes EarPods with a Lightning connector and the 3.5mm dongle in the iPhone box. Even my wife who is a naysayer when it comes to technological change (if she had her way, we'd still be using Windows XP at home) has gotten along just fine with the iPhone 7.
Doesn't work with my Grados, I can't stand anything being stuck in my ears, and on the train I prefer headphones that are physically connected to the player, protecting headphones and player from loss or theft.

Not making this phone full screen is a missed opportunity by Apple, I believe.

I prefer to operate phones one handed and have normal sized male hands.

Even I struggle to reach the top left corner (right if you’re left handed) on the iPhone 6/7/8 series models - never mind the Plus versions.

My Mum has an SE however (on my recommendation) and loves it.

Keeping the body the same size but making it full screen would allow all but people with the smallest hands to operate this phone single handedly.

It would also open it up to a wider customer base - including perhaps me as someone who has always bought flagships but now questions the value proposition of $1000 plus iPhones.

——

PS - shame it’s losing the Jack too, but that’s the way the industry has moved sadly.

Making the screen bigger, even in the same overall size, would make it more difficult for one-handed use because one’s thumb would have to stretch that much farther. 4” is already pushing it. The bottom chin bezel also helps one-handed use by raising the screen up (it’s difficult for the thumb to reach the bottom of the device). Basically, if one-handed operation is a major goal of this phone, which it was, they can’t change it much. They could chop off the top bezel, maybe, but it’s not really hurting anyone up there.

Isn't this design/form factor about 6 years old at this point? I guess Apple doesn't have enough R&D money or creativity to come up with a new design that satisfies that small screen crowd. Unreal with these greedy bean counters.

It’s hard to improve upon perfection.

I'll wait to see if they do remove the headphone jack. If not, same price, better screen and battery life, I'll will jump. I'd love to see the black color used for the 5/5s be revived as well (actually, I want that black for an iPad Pro and Mac too).

If they zap the headphone jack, but improve all of the above and offer that black (slate?) again, I'd probably still upgrade. I am not using headphones with my phones any more, but if given the choice, I'd like that option.

Love it or hate it, the iPhone 5S design is now dated, and it would be a no-brainer for Apple to bring the SE's design in line with the rest of the iPhone lines.

Love it - the last Apple design iPhone. If you are keen on the Android form-factor iPhone, the 6 onwards are there.

To redesign the 4 inch iPhone in the "mold" of the newer Samsung clone will be an added expense. I will take a newer chip instead, considering that both A10 and A11 cost almost the same for Apple.

I understand your point, but I tried this out with my Mum who has average sized hands, I believe.

She can reach to the top corners with her thumb. It’s at the limit to be sure, but she can do it.

Those with smaller than average hands would struggle though as memtoned.

From a business POV it would depend upon how many of those who choose not to purchase versus how many more you would attract by having a smaller form factor fullscreen iPhone.

Finally, a new phone to replace my wife's aging SE.

I know it was inevitable that the headphone jack was eliminated, but its absence never stops being annoying. I really enjoy my iPhone 8, but 6 months in I still don't understand the user-end argument for getting rid of the always useful headphone jack in favour of the never used wireless charging feature.

If only your posts made sense and were relevant to the article.
Oops...unfortunately, some sarcasm must have entered into this with 100x more rumors than substance.
I may have lost count with the even numbers predicting an SE, the uneven denying it.
I am so sorry.

A wire connected via press fit to a jack prevents theft? That's a new one.

All this time people have been locking their car doors and spending money on car alarms, when they could have simply tied electrical wire between one of the wheels and their front door knob.

whats this head phone jack you speak of???

Something most people stopped using years before Apple removed the jack.

If no headphone jack I’d at least expect them to try to find space for a Taptic Engine so they can enable 3D Touch features and waterproofing...

Stop including chargers . . . no thanks.

Far too many companies doing this already.

That's the trend, and it makes perfect sense. These days, the vast majority of buyers are on, at least, their second phone that uses a USB-based charger. Almost everybody has at least one. Many people actually prefer third-party chargers. Why waste money and resources on making people take something they don't need or want?

My family of 3 love our SEs. I hope they upgrade the SE without huge changes, but then I sort of don’t care as our phones are about 1 yrs old and nowhere near needing replacement. All phones are on 11.3 and as fast as ever. A bit expensive but even with hindsight I think their integration with imacs, iPads, and apple watches make it well worth it.

May tho? Surely if they were going to do this then they would of announce it alongside the red iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

We’re veering slightly off the topic of the thread but, from my perspective, it doesn’t make sense at all.

Personally I always include the charger when I sell or give away my old iPhone.

Plus chargers are like any electronic product, they eventually fail. When I am purchasing a new product, I want it with the charger included and the same full guarantee covering all of the items in the box.

At least? The A11 is the newest processor out right now. It won't have an A11 chip.
They will be coming out with an A12 for the next iPhone. Everyone I know who got the SE got it for the form factor, not the price and I’d imagine that holds fairly true across the buyers of the SE. It would be nice to see the SE be up to par on internal specs with the higher end iPhones for once.

Citing Phil Schiller, freeing the design from excessive volume was necessary to include a larger taptic engine. Vibration now should be like never before - as your wife might joyfully experience...

And this form factor will sell like hotcakes.

It will be popular, certainly.

I think my wife would like one, but I won't get it for her unless it has at least an A11 chip.

That will the the SE3, expected in 2021. No A11 in this one.

That would be extremely nice but I wonder if it fits Apple's price point and internal feature set expectations for the SE line? Consistent with keeping the SoC at least a generation behind current phones, I wonder whether they'd go for 3D Touch. (There was a rumor that the least expensive of the phones for 2018 was going to be released without 3D Touch.)

Fantastic! Now instead of listening to music and charging my phone, I get the privilege of either listening to music or charge my phone! #thinkdifferent

I know this is a kludge that no one would ever do for a phone, but my 2000 Jeep XJ has a pretty old Kenwood/Apple adapter for the Kenwood sound system that doesn't charge - sort of the same situation. Charge or music. I found a dongle/adapter at Apple that allows you to plug both a charging cable and an audio cable* into the dongle so you can do both.

This works fine in a vehicle. It would be very awkward in a lot of other situations.

*The dongle is available with either 3.5mm or Lightning jacks for the audio side. Charging side is only Lightning.
