That aren't compatible with any other device I own either. I don't get why people have such a hatred for the headphone jack, if you don't use it, great. But a lot of people still do and the dongle is a ****** solution to a problem that didn't need to exist.
The ONLY complaint I have with the Lightning headphone jack is this absolute lack of compatibility with other devices. That is to say, there's not a single adapter or dongle I can buy that lets me use one set of Lightning headphones with every device I might want to plug it into.
And that's been my beef with Apple since this started. They sell Lightning headphones which can't be used with anything else but recent iPhones and iPads. And even with Lightning compatible devices, they haven't replaced the 3.5mm jack entirely for some common practices: There's no way to plug two Lightning headphone jacks into an iDevice to share the audio; there's a splitter for listening and charging, but not a simple Y-adapter for audio. Wireless headphones can't share audio either -- AirPlay 2 may change that, but it's been a long wait.
I'm not talking about anything exotic here -- basic, common uses for headphones that have been around for decades. The idea that I have to go wireless in order to have one set of headphones for all of my Apple products is kind of ridiculous, much less anything else. And wireless requires dongles to use with any device that doesn't support Bluetooth -- but at least I do have that option. Otherwise, if I only want to carry one set of headphones for any device I encounter, it's a 3.5mm wired pair. And that flies in the face of everything for which Apple claims they removed the 3.5mm jack.
They can take away the 3.5mm headphone jack, but don't make the alternative wireless only. If I have to buy an adapter, so be it -- but at least give me the adapter. The problem for me, is that they took the 3.5mm headphone jack away before they had a full replacement ready. As it stands we have a half-baked solution that requires multiple wired variations and wireless in order to compatible within Apple's own ecosystem.
