Which is way more aesthetically pleasing than the random arrangement on Android. The problem with android widgets is that there is no uniform design language much like the icons. None of the widgets fit together and it just all looks like a mess. The iOS solution is way more elegant.

But I know some people don't seem to be very sensitive to aesthetics, maybe android is for them.
More elegant? It looks like crap....Look at the battery widget with the huge wasted space below the %. Looks elegant to you? LoL please..... What so elegant of having huge widget with all those wasted space?

Yes you do, absolutely. The problem is when you want an app to deliver notifications, it can't be closed at all. A timer feature makes no difference.

It's simple .....

Want notifications from an app 24/7 ..... set it to never sleep.

If it's because it's taking too much juice with background services, then the app is garbage to begin with, and uninstalling would be the best option.

Notifications on the majority of apps barely uses any CPU, RAM, or battery life. So it's completely fine to set however many apps you want not to sleep.

Also, you actually do get notifications from apps when they are asleep.

For example: I still get my notifications from my Outlook email app, even if it's put to sleep. It's just the standard android system notifications(like updates) that you won't get and really depends on the app.

Putting apps to sleep is more beneficial for apps that trigger GPS location or pull data even when the app is closed. When it's sleep those apps will not do such.

The problem is when you have that one app that does drain battery, and you also need it to work. You never know because there is barely any quality control. Other times it's just a buggy version of an otherwise working app.

Unfortunately, not everyone has taste. That's how you get all those ugly custom themes in Android.

You can easily check the battery details for that. It's not hard to spot a rouge app. I even had battery issues with Facebook on my iPhone. Not sure if Facebook fixed it, cause I don't use Facebook on any platform anymore.

So what is this battery draining app on Android you speak of?

Ok so I spotted this app, now what? I can’t uninstall it because I need it, or maybe it’s because it’s Google Play Services so I can’t uninstall it at all.
What do I do now?

Well the OP helped with my Note 8 versus iPhone X considerations. Thanks for your post!

Since I have 2 lines for phones on my AT&T account, I’ve dabbled with using a Damsung S4 and S6 Edge phone on the extra lines.

I do like a few things about Android such as always on clock and, well, honestly, that’s all I miss.

I never flashed either phone but for me, I like to keep my stuff stock and just what’s available and enjoy is without spending hours trying to customize to my liking.

As an iphone user who is very tempted to switch to the Note, you make some interesting comments but also some off the cuff comments.

1) Not everyone listens to Apple Music. Some people actually built up a decent sized music library through itunes purchases and CD uplpads before Apple Music came along so some people still prefer to listen to what they own.

2) The preferred method of watching a video is to tilt the screen. Have you ever gone to a cinema and watched a movie where the screen is vertical and not horizontal? Because I haven't. Film makers figured out over a hundred years ago that the optimised viewing experience for a human is a vertical screen, ie cinematic effect. So when you say just watch your phone in portrait mode you are dismissing a significant feature of the iphone or any phone for that matter, that is media consumption, in particular watching movies.

And why would you do all those crazy things to a phone like uninstall the rom? That's just crazy. No wonder you had issues. As an iphone user I don't even know what uninstall the rom means.

I owned a Note 3 four years ago for about 6 weeks so I can appreciate some of the things you said. But after testing the Note 8 in a Samsung store honestly it has improved out of sight. If I decide to get the Note, because I am very tempted, I won't be doing things like uninstall the rom. I'll just enjoy it straight out of the box because it is a great device. Sure I will customise it here and there with a theme, a widget or two and wall paper, but I won't be uninstalling roms for goodness sakes. That's just sick. Maybe the ios in me is coming to the fore.

The true test for you, as a long time android user, is if you can handle being contained in Apple's garden wall. Most androiders who swap to ios can't handle the lack of choice in ios. A week is not enough time for you to see if you can handle that. But I hope you can. Only time will tell. Keep enjoying your iohone, I'm still on the fence.

No wondering you guys hate android....this will happen when u are using Samsung phone cause their OS is trash... Vanilla android is where it’s aT... Pure android without the crappy touchwiz

I'll bite.

1. You are (by your own admition) complaining about things long since fixed.
2. It is not valid (by your own admition here as well ) to complain about a custom rom. Rooting and Romming phones has stopped being a thing for years. Only the uber-geeks and dev need do this. Androids are now fast enough and polished enough.
3. China. You can't complain about google in china and blame android. Its not a valid.
4. You sound like you are trying to justify the X by rubbishing your last phone.

This is yet another one of those passive aggressive jabs at Samsung/Android thread. As both an iPhone and Android user from day one, I can honestly say most of the criticisms that you listed is either bogus, user ignorance, and user error.

Talk about being passive aggressive and belligerent.

Op enjoy your new device.

Come on you know. This is exactly what the Android fans do every time. It is always user error or a lie. Funny but on my thread they said you need to customize. On this thread they said customizing is the problem.

I like both and usually have an iOS and android device to switch between. Currently using an 8+ and have an S8+ sitting in the draw iPhone X arrives tomorrow!

I 100% agree that the home screen on iOS is just dull, hell even allowing us to shrink the icons slightly would be an improvement, but that is offset by the overall slickness and fact that most apps (other than 1st party google ones) are almost always better on an iPhone. Having said that I do often think that the post Jobs apple may have jumped the shark so imo if google focus on fragmentation and maybe make chrome (and market it as) a proper desktop OS then apple with it’s confused product line is there for the taking. The continued general crapness of windows has really helped them IMO.

Right now though, can’t wait to get my X tomorrow!

Because Samsung takes at least half a year to release a system upgrade, if ever. They abandon their phones from not that long time ago as well.
Also stock systems are often full of bloatware and thus very laggy.

And yes Android is getting better each year, but I don’t like the fundemental philosophy of how android is designed so I decided to switch.

I have been using iOS for a long time on my iPads too so I know what it is. I don’t think there is a lack of choice. It’s better to have a few choices that are meaningful and decent in their own way. Than an endless sea of meaningless choices with a large chance of being complete crap.

1. Fixed but goes to show how the designers don’t care about quality, optimization, aesthetics and integrity.
2. Not after using your device for half a year or so.
3. Why isn’t it? I need it to do something and it doesn’t.
4. Why do I need to do that? I can buy what I want, I don’t need any additional justifications.

I used to think that but now I understand, they don’t give you control so you can’t mess it up. I am baffled by how seriously people **** up their android home screens, they can just be disgustingly ugly. But with iOS there’s not much you can do and as a result most people have a presentable home screen.

If I was designing iOS, I rather prevent people from ****ing it up with their terrible taste.

You seem to have great memory in your OP.
Really? You’re just arguing for arguing sake aren’t you?

I remember a bunch of apps having done the same thing but I can’t remember each one of them, is that shocking to you? I did give you at least one didn’t I? Google play services.

You specifically stated that an app you needed also drains your battery. Why wouldn't I ask which app? Google play services would mean it's an issue with Android system services. All your statements are very vague, which is why I'm questioning the credibility of your OP. I guess you thought your statements wouldn't be challenged if it's a "wall of text". Every time you reply, your credibility decreases. You probably Googled old complaints from forums and put them together as your own.

I know Android and iOS inside out. So you're not fooling me.

I use both android and IOS. Preferred always android cause of user experience and hardware. I like stereo speakers as well as big amoled screen in small bezels with back button between different apps not only in-app. IOS had this pathetic little shortcut on the upper left on the screen to executete action. I know there's (vanishing and appearing) 3D touch feature in the middle left screen but for me hit or miss cause I'm small hand woman and mostly i put the phone on recent app screen.
But Iphone X gestures and hardware met my expectations. Now my pleasure of using smartphones is IOS on IPhone X->android->other IOS devices.
IOS 11 also resolved problem with pushing notification with gmail, new control center is quite ugly but very useful.
My complain is better battery life, more punchy (oversaturated) color display i prefer and all metal body or another material on the back (like ballistic nylon or kevlar from droid turbo devices).
I just want the smartphone was less fragile and prone to damage.
Hardwarewise i also appreciate superior audio both speakers (for smartphone) and BT, 3D touch I'm addicted to and GESTURES. Not to mention oled screen with small bezels (washed out, too accurate) and overall big screen in small body.
Every choice, whatever software or hadware, is compromise. My dream phone covering all my expectations don't exist, so assuming my wishlist Iphone X filled the most tasks

So let me get this straight, you’d rather chase down rouge apps and micro-manage your phone rather than just having it work?

I have always been an Android user, and I have also been an apple hater in the earlier days, just like all the ones you see online all the time. Why buy Apple when you can get more features for half the price with other brands?

I don’t worship big companies that don’t care about me, I don’t care if my product is Apple or not, only if it is good. If Android can get their **** together some time in the future, or if Apple drops the ball I’ll switch in a heartbeat. Fanboyism is stupid, please don’t be a fanboy, pick the best product, regardless of alliegence, it helps the market be more competitive as well.

Good grammar, good sentences and paragraphs.

Well written!

A lot of OP's complaints were of the "after you do this deep-dive tinkering that's for developers and manufacturer testing, or things never meant to be hammered into my device, Android phones suck!" variety. Then don't do that and most of your problems are solved. No different than the person slapping on a jailbreak that jacks up their iPhone. No one wants to hear them whinging, either.

It sounds like you've wrecked your own Android phone experience. If Apple let you, you'd probably wreck that too and complain about it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your new phone. Thanks for posting your thoughts.

The problem is if I don’t do this deep dive, the the Android fanboys will accuse you of being too technically unsophisticated to use Android, cus you see, Android is for people who can do these deep dives, customize the crap out of them and fix all the issues on themselves.
If you use a device that just works out of the box like the iPhone, then you must be a retarded Apple sheep.

because there have been many instances of that one app I need to use but also drains battery?
I didn’t say it has always been the same one, I said there have always been instances of having one.

Great stuff, the only thing I would disagree on is cases. On the iPhone side of the fence there is a lot more choice for high quality third party options compared to a particular Android phone brand.
