lets be real the general public needs more than 1 camera, especially at $999
There’s a lot of merit to this statement. Many people I know who aren’t tech nerds in the least feel that a good camera set up is very important in their phone. A single lens just doesn’t give that perception. Most people don’t care about thin. They want to know they’re getting the best bang for the buck, and camera is a big part of that for lots of folks.

Thin is nice but it doesn't really do anything differently, you can put the Pro or even Max in many clutch or small bags no problem.

"let's use her phone she has a Pro" - Don't be that person when the friends want a TikTok or Instagram and you have the inferior phone.

Holding an Air in hand it doesn't feel that thin or whatever compared to regular models. One obvious giveaway is the limited camera array.
So not true. It’s lighter, and the way you can work the screen feels completely different from 16 Pro or 17 Pro. As for the cameras, unless you’re a professional photographer, it really doesn’t matter. Thin is what Apple always wanted to go with, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I think Air sales are going to have legs with a steady increase in sales as the word gets out how good it actually is for most people. There was so much "the sky is falling" before release with people spreading things like "how easy it will bend" and "the battery life will be terrible" — both of which have been proven to be very false.

The lack of a second camera is the killer for most people I know. But also *most* people only really use the main camera as-is.

Normal people looking at the Air in store still consider it to have poor battery life.

For the camera, just like battery, most people want to feel secure. They want more than merely "adequate." It's the same reason why people buy 4 door cars when 2 is enough most of the time.

Not a surprise, the mini failed, the Plus failed, the Air failed. Does anyone else think the iPhone doesn’t need a secondary base model?
The plus and the air are not bad phones. Apple I just pricing them with really fat profit margins compared to the actual base iPhone. If the plus was just a $50 upgrade, which would me sense from a consumer perspective, it would have sold much better. The Air shouldn’t cost more than $100 more than the base iPhone.

While I don't agree with this I will admit I was not nearly as impressed by it as I was by Galaxy Edge when holding it. There's something about that design that just doesn't quite click with me or make me crave for it as much.

Don’t be mad, Air lovers. But understand regular non-geeks see it as half an iPhone.

It lacks cameras. It lacks battery life. It’s missing a speaker. All for $999.

The Air got some traction the first few weeks because of early adopters. The regular mainstream folks buying in October and later don’t want to take risks with battery life, cameras, or speakers.
This sounds like the same kind or hard hitting analysis that analysts covering AAPL threw out early into a sales cycle only to see Apple prove them wrong again.

You have no numbers and you’re just guessing what consumers might think.

Whether or not the Air is successful is to be determined. Calm down, we’re 3 weeks in.

I'll just leave this here...

... the Air is this years Plus.

There are too many models in this lineup and there is not a market for them, making them different shapes and sizes wont change that. How many phones do they need to discontinue to learn this?!

You know what’s interesting about this is the Wikipedia page has said that the air is replacing the Plus.

I’m not sure who put that there.

It’s marketing. People come up to my wife curious not knowing what the phone is. Usually strange as iPhones are typically spotted quickly.

The Air is not "a failure"

Nor was the Mini .. nor the Plus

ALL OF THEM had buyers interested in them.

It's nice to have options.
Yes the iPhone air might have buyers however most individuals will look at the battery life & think there is no way that’s going to be decent after multiple updates & constant usage over the next couple of years and all individuals have been told for years is having more cameras and various different features within the camera is the way to go and then to go & say forget all about that go for this because it’s slim is not going to work for most individuals especially at that price point and no fancy marketing is going to majorly improve the sales of the iPhone air

Calling the Air a failure after two weeks is naive. People said the same thing about the Apple Watch the first year it came out and it's not only still here but the most popular watch out there
Because most normal individuals aren’t silly like for example the Samsung equivalent has 2 cameras & a slightly bigger battery
So going forward most individuals will probably wait for next years version

I actually had this happen on one of my morning walks a few weeks ago.

They were curious about my ... (wait for it)

iPhone SE1 😀😇

The more I think about it, Apple should have built an iPhone 17 Plus instead of the iPhone Air. It would have all the advantages of the iPhone 17, but in a larger screen size (using the same LTPO display as the iPhone 16 Pro Max?) and a battery as big as 4,800 to 4,900 mAh in the eSIM-only version.

This iPhone Air is the best iPhone I’ve ever had. It’s sad it most likely won’t return for a revision in the line. All people want is these technological Pro bricks, no matter if they don’t really use the Pro features.
The point is that compared to the iPhone 17 with the iPhone Air one pays $200 more just to get 0.09" thinner, 0.13" wider, 026" taller, 12 gms lighter and one camera instead of two (no macro, no tele).

One can pay +$100 and get three cameras with an iPhone Pro "technological Pro brick" [sheesh]. Or save $200 with the iPhone 17 and still get twice as many cameras as the Air.

Note that I am not disrespecting anyone's choice. YMMV! I am however a bit insulted by folks choosing cute and dissing on those folks who choose to spend $200 less and get more competence; or dissing on those folks who choose to spend $100 more and get even more competence.

I knew the Air would flop because of how the positioned it. They didn’t give us a single compelling reason why it exists. The Air should have been a one more thing moment, but they completely missed the mark. Instead of showing us how the iPhone Air makes using an iPhone better, they introduced it and then immediately pivoted to talking about a battery pack. What does that tell customers? Apple doesn’t have confidence in the device, and it's likely just a vehicle to sell overpriced accessories with high margins.

They split professional and luxury into two phones this year, which makes sense, but they're still presenting them like fast food restaurants do with their fries small, medium, large. Instead of being the luxury model its the bean counter model. Maybe it’s the pre recorded polished infomercial format that sucks the excitement out of these events and thats why Apple can’t position new products anymore.
What makes you think the Air is a "flop"? Do you think that millions of Airs have not been sold? Personally I think the Air is a good product even though I would never pay $1k to get one camera instead of three.

Also note that I consider the comment that "Apple can’t position new products anymore" 100% wrong.

That’s the point nobody is disputing that it would be a good device
However you have basically said one of the issues is the camera at that price point
And the battery life would be the other after a year down the line from now

Here is what I say to people who think one camera is a deal breaker…

Move closer to the subject like a pro
would.
Sometimes I want a decent quality of something far away from me that to which I cannot reasonably get closer. Nothing wrong with us non-professionals wanting to be able to zoom in to get that photo. It’s good to have choices. If a single lens set up is fine for someone, then that’s great. But, others may prefer something else. That’s okay, too.
