I for one would LOVE for iTunes to be stripped down to JUST MUSIC. And have a separate program, maybe called "iLife", that acts as an aggregator for all content accross the iLife suite. It would resemble front row, but with a less graphical interface. This would house a built-in movie rental store as well, much like on :apple:TV.

iTunes is already part of the iLife suite. If anyone has any older Mac OS X or iLife discs, you could get an old version of iTunes on there. Mac OS X v10.0 had iTunes 1.1, the first OS X version. If you're really desperate and you still have a PPC, maybe you can get your hands on SoundJam MP.

The classic goes away. Buhbye.

There are compelling reasons to get rid of the Classic, flash is getting cheaper, flash allows the device to be smaller/thinner, longer battery life, transfer rates are comparable (flash v hdd). But price is still a significant factor. I going to compare the nano and the classic since the iTouch is a completely different device. At the moment, price per gig they are....

Nano
$37.50 (4gig) $25.00 (8gig)
Classic
$3.13 (80gig) $2.19 (160gig)

Those prices for the nano and the classic would go down soon. That would make the Classic even cheaper, and a more compelling buy for those with lots of music, and the nano might squeeze into the $10/gig price range.

Transfer speeds on the HDD are still blazing fast compared to the flash drives btw.

'king oath they are. Pulled my 30GB 5.5G iPod out last night to transfer a stack of video onto it and the difference is incredible.

I'd love if they kept all the same hardware and just doubled the transfer speed.

yes true but some people dont want to opt for the nano's feeble size and hard/flash drive,
say what ever you want ,but the nano has never had the amount of storage space the classic did niether does the touch, i doubt the classic will leave us soon

I don't have a problem with BR support, but I would like Apple to come through on its 2005 commitment to support both HD formats (ie. HD DVD too). Obviously it would be up to the user to supply their own drive, but I don't see this as too far-fetched even though it's a "dead" format; the codecs are the same, the copy protection is the same, and some discs are already supported even in Tiger.

Why support a dead format? That would be a poor move on Apple's part.

i think that Nano is just a paper cut, showing what the Nano will look like. I DOUBT that it is the actual product.

Great news

This seems right on track with rumors for a late september event. A complete refresh and price drop of ipods would generate huge sales just in time for the holiday season. The photo of the supposed new iPod Nano looks great. I am looking forward to this update. The iPod Touch needs an update to look similar to the new iPhone 3G. iTunes 8 will be needed if the entire iPod lineup is refreshed and if the rumors are true centered around an iTunes Subscription Plan. Blu-ray in 10.5.6 sounds on par with including Blu-ray optional on Mac Pro's for a January release at Macworld. 10.5.5 will likely come in the next few weeks and hold us over until right after Macworld.

I am most excited about this news because this will surely raise their market share. Hopefully we see quality updates and smooth transitions. It seems a lot has changed since the PowerPC days in terms of quality. Looking forward to the updates!

here i posted it for you:

After posting my iPod Predictions, I was faced with the daunting task of reorganizing 2222 (yes, that’s the number) of songs I have in my iTunes Library into simple folders. After 3 hours, I’m still in the “J”s. I was thinking of a way to organize all my music, when I thought of an idea: iTunes Events. Imagine this: Each month, a new event, or in iTunes’ case, a Mix, is created, which contains all the songs you added from that month. You can skim album artwork, merge, split, hide, and flag songs just like you can in iPhoto. For people with giant music collections (a good number), this would be lifesaving. I really hope to see this in iTunes 8.0, coming next month.

What's the purpose of reorganising the library?

I have well over 6000 tracks but feel no need to put them all in folders. In the underlying file structure of the library iTunes does a fine job of organising and with coverflow it's a piece of cake to zip through the albums.

product info leak is illegal

I dunno how many of you posting pre-release information after your 'sources' signing NDA. leaking information prematurely will have significant impact to Apple. I am not an Apple Employee but definitely would not like to see the company do bad.

Because it's good to fulfil promises.

hey ask Mykbibby i just posted it for him

Timing off

I have a feeling that the release date is off by a bit.

Currently the "Buy a Mac for college and get a free iPod" promotion is going on and ends September 15. College students are most likely the number one buyers of iPods.

I doubt Apple would release new iPods during the promotion. If anything the new iPods will be released after the 15th.

Dude - this is all rumour-mongering. Nobody here, not even Kevin Rose, has sources high up enough to know exactly what's going on. Nobody here has signed an NDA because none of this information is true as yet.

Rumours, not leaks, is the stage of the product release cycle that we are up to right now. Leaks normally happen the morning of an event, Apple's way too secure now for anything like this to get out sooner especially after the debacle of the 3G nano release where somebody leaked the design weeks before it happened. Good thing was they looked so damned ugly on paper that none of us believed it. They're gorgeous in the metal though, bought one as soon as we unpacked them from their boxes.

Wow, it's always impressive to see Kevin Rose do anything without a beer in his hand.

Yeah, that's rude, but when has this guy been right about Apple-related rumors anyway? Why should we take his word for it?

knowing about a product before it's released doesnt prevent people from buying it. like when we saw the iphone 3g case days before it was announced, but it didnt prevent anyone from getting it, in fact it sold extremely well

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple released an iPod Nano touch, seeing as the App Store has had such great success, and I know that they would want to increase the amount of people able to access the App Store.

stupid nanos, i dont care about the nano! i want the new macbooks! the video nanos are only a year old why would they already change them?? the mbp has the same design for years.
