Nice mock-ups.
The original iMacs were that way to make an impression in the marketplace and present a theme of change and progressivity, after years of beige boxes in a failed attempt to attract business.
The iPod market is very clearly consumer and young/hip focus. Having colors is sensible.
Flower power was not their biggest seller, but it was in many of their marketing campaigns to make a point. Having a flagship or even an outlier product is sensible. People still fixate on it!
Then have the boring units for the lemmings you are really selling to. 🙂

has been know to test design ideas in new products before jumping in with both feet for a full release. They did it with the translucent plastic buttons, then utilized its look for the iMac and then the G3 PowerMac.
