I don't understand why would someone buy 80gb iPod just to carry music and photos? Cmon guys, who are you, photographer of National Geographic?!? My 5 year worth music archive is hardly 35gbs, plus 5-6gbs of photo, and thats it.. I'm really curious to see who has 80gb of music here?

The only reason why I don't have 80 gigs of music already, is that my hard drive is only 40 gigs. So my 60 gig iPod will currently do nicely for my music and photos and backup.

But if I wanted to put all my music on the iPod, I could certainly use the 80 gig. I get around 15-20 cds a month (I'm a music journalist), and now I have to erase the bad ones when I've heard them.

On the other hand; to have an iPod with ALL my music on it. I wouldn't want to get busted for really liking Scatman John

But NOOOOOOO! I JUST got another iPod! Why do they have to upgrade NOW? This happens to me every time I buy one: One month later they come with an upgrade. I guess this one'll have anti-gravity functions and an in-built phazer. Then I'll have to get it anyway. Curses!

Finally...I can CONFIRM

Apple will release updated PM and PB in the future.

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT...you heard it first from me, as official a confirmation as you can get without The Steve telling you himself.

If there's "something else" and no video iPod--or even no video device at all--I don't think Apple need be too worried about the backlash. I don't think THAT many people are following the rumors of next week that closely, and I don't think some misdirection by the press will translate into any harm to Apple's sales of... whatever it is.

While I agree that Apple shouldn't worry too much about rumor sites and stuff, if this special event is anti-climactic it will be a big deal. It won't harm Apple's sales, but there has been a tremendous amount of anticipation this time, largely due to the 'One More Thing' reference, as well as the red curtains (which correct or not are being speculated as being movie curtains.)

On top of the tech news sources saying that a video-enabled iPod is anticipated, you have less-connected sources saying that such a product is coming (basically a giant game of telephone...)

Life will go on either way. But there will be a LOT of attention on Wednesday...

I am personally predicting both Mac updates and a video-enabled iPod. The 'One More Thing' doesn't have to literally mean only 1 thing, it's just a reference to Steve Job's trademark catchphrase. He's going to do some general announcements (a lot of Mac talk this time), and then say "One more thing..."

No video device with such a buzz of speculation across all media outlets would be a negative kick to Apple's stock price and kill the goodwill value Apple has right now...
Ever since the announcement of the media event, the stock has actually been going down. I do not think that the video device is priced into the stock..

Your theory might be correct if we had seen the stock price climbing since the announcement of this event...

Yes, it will hurt if it's anti-climactic, but I don't think it will hurt if the climax is something OTHER than the "video iPod." The video iPod people will be disappointed while the press and public will be paying attention to what DID come out instead.

But yes, video iPod or not, the one more thing ought to be big, since that's how Apple has hyped it. (And actually that's why I don't think it WOULD be a video iPod, because I don't see that being big--yet.)

I agree. It doesn't actually have to be a video-enabled iPod. But it does have to be big, or people will be disappointed. And then life will go on of course... ;)

Think of the red curtain as a large-scale, public Rorschach Test, where everyone sees their own personal utopian dreams take form...

It will happen... Just gotta believe...

Keep in mind that the stock price has been dropping (since the announcement) along with the ENTIRE MARKET. Its hard to fairly say that the drop in price has anything to do with the announcement. The NASDAQ dropped nearly 4% from Tuesday to Thursday. Hardly a fair statement and clearly not a real indicator of whether or not a video iPod or other device is priced into the stock.

If we don't see a Video iPod I think we will see a new iPod that is about the same size as the old iPod Mini. I doubt that Apple would call the media to an event just to announce a higher resulotion display on Powerbooks and a 20gig larger iPod.

Since this comes just 5 weeks after the last keynote I know this will be a big announcement.

(Bear with me, ~Shard~, because I'm thinking as I write. It sounds like I disagree with you but, in the end, I think I agree.)

I don't think that's it, actually. Well, I don't think there was a delay in a hardware announcement. I just think the marketing people at Apple are rolling around in laughter contemplating their own genius. What do you figure it costs to rent out that theater and send invites to people? Peanuts compared to a few ads in mainstream publications, I'm sure. And announcing another product a month after the nano...well, pre-announcing things has never been a problem with Apple before. So what would have stopped them from announcing it along with the nano and ROKR? (Which, if you ask me, was a mediocre lineup for a whole event anyway.)

But what if something wasn't finished that was beyond Apple's control? Something that they had to keep under wraps until it was ready to go (lest the competition try to get in on the game as well)? A service, perhaps: the movie/video store.

So...

Next week's announcement was really the "one more thing" from the nano unveiling: the iTMS providing video content along with a piece of hardware to go with it: a tablet-like device modeled after the iPod.

Squire

Makes sense - and yes, we agree in the end. ;) I, too, think this is a "leftover" from a previous anouncement, hence the "one mroe thing" which wasn't qute ready last gtime - whether that "last time" rfers to the nano unveiling or the missing Paris Expo - I was using the Expo as an example.

The date is fast approaching - can't wait to see what it is!

I'm just hoping Apple starts selling red curtains. Oh, man, that would be sweet!

How do you propose they will get a 1.8 inch drive into that?

I'm betting on a video iPod on Wednesday; at the moment I'll believe podfuture over Thinksecret.

The other thing I am trying to imagine is how will you navigate and select your downloaded content while sitting at the TV? If it streams from your computer then how would you interact with it?
I think if the intention of a Video Airport Express is to stream media from a remote computer to an attached TV, it would possibly have an infrared port for accepting signals from a remote. Software back at the computer would accept and interpret the remote signals.

But if they put a video port on an Airport Express, what kind of port should it be? Analog? HDMI? Or something in between?

Analog for now, there's not nearly enough people with HDTV's right yet.

blech

I hope they *do* release a video ipod so folks finally shut up about them. I'm *so* tired of hearing about 'em. THEY HAVE NO PRACTICAL VALUE! What are you really gonna do with it? If you wanna watch a video ....... USE THE D**N DVD! You're probably at home anyway; Just pop it in. I'm a hardcore iPod user.... I love mine, I've got two of each generation *including* the shuffles and the mini (in each color) and the nano (white and black) , but this is SILLY! (I collect things, don't judge me)

I can see the headlines now:
"Runner mysteriously smashes into a Dairy Queen"

related story, back page stuff, two days earlier..

"Man wins vPod in local raffle"

even pink!?!

Even the pink mini??

If they do come out with a video iPod you will be the first one in line...for each color.:D

Well...... er.... MAYBE *shakes fist*

I might *buy* it but,., eh. I'll buy it.

I STILL THINK IT'S SILLY!

(yes, even the pink one altho i don't use it....often)

Who cares about red curtains!

The red curtains don't mean anything! They look exactly like the curtains at the California Theater, where the event is held. It could even be a move to fool the rumors sites.... Honestly this thing is wacko! Video iPods=stupid, because it would take off the focus from the nano, and Apple said they wouldn't do it (although they always "change their mind"...), PB or PM updates would have to be really revolutionary to take a full event that's called "One more thing...", so we are in total mystery... the coolest would be a product almost no one has suspected....We'll see!!

I am hesitant to rule out HDMI for a possible Video Airport Express, because I expect (maybe I'm clueless here) that it would need to decode H.264, the decoders I've heard of (ATI) are also HDMI/HDCP ready, and both BluRay and HDDVD use H.264. But Analog output also for wider compatibility.

Good point. But the market as a whole is off right now. It might be gearing up for quarterly calls and several big players may come in under expectation.

Also, if memory serves Apple stock tends to drop before big events (MWSF, WWDC, etc) and this is true of many big companies with a 'predictable' product release cycle. I am not surprised the price has dropped, it still is around $51 - $51.30, given the market and possibly due to a lack of rumors on core hardware at this point, as a purely iPod video release may not see the growth the market wants, which is why I think it is more than purely an iPod video release, but video will be there somewhere (iTablet with media center capabilities anyone....)

I stand by my conviction that a non video-related announcement will be met negatively in the press, honestly not sure about the stock impact, but Apple will see a loss the 'iPod goodwill factor'.
