My current AAC256 library is about 56gb. I buy about 6-10 CDs per month sometimes more. I want a device that has some extra capacity to keep me going for a couple of years.

You gotta problem with that?

I also would like some extra Gbs to carry work around on. I'm a designer — some of those files get pretty big.

Edit: Besides, who made you judge of what other people's needs for equipment should be? Just because you don't understand the need for extra capacity doesn't mean that there isn't a market for it. My music archive is certainly older than 5 years...

I understand what you're saying, but in the other guys defense, if you look at the market as a whole, the reasons he gave for thinking the 80GB iPod is unnecessary is quite true.

So on the flip-side of things, I'm sure even you realize that what applies to you and several people on this board doesn't apply to the overwhelming majority who only have a total HD space of 40-60 GB to store their OS, all their apps, photos, and music in their laptops/desktops.

I hope that they do come out with some new products, I hope that the new iPod, if it comes out, will come in different colors and offer some new things because I need a new full size iPod along with my new Power Mac (when it comes out)

Disagree. That's why they make different size iPods, for different people with different uses. What your use is may not be other peoples uses.

Ah sweet life...

So the question remains: What's behind the black... oops, wrong city, red curtain?

I think Steve is having a joke on us.

And nobody's telling them to get one — but to dismiss those who do because they personally wouldn't need it is like saying we should all be using Mac Minis... they're good enough for most people, right?

OLED?

Interface tweaks? I wonder if OLED screens have finally hit their stride in Steve's mind?

Really, the event sounds boring, if it goes ahead as predicted.

Dual Core PowerMacs is a good thing.

Slightly faster processor in PB?
Boring. As long as PB are crippled with FB speeds, they will lag in performance and be overall lackluster.

5G iPods sound boring - cosmetic upgrade.

AirPort Express does sound good.

Yeah, I'm with you. At least that way we know what we're not getting... :D

No, with windows, the company THEMSELVES promises the moon, and then keeps taking things away until what they finally promise is something they can almost deliver.

Here the rumor mill giveth and the rumor mill taketh away...

wow. you're really freaking out over this. relax. its just an ipod.

What's the point???

I mean, if they're going to keep ahead of the competitors who already have video AND music capabilities, isn't this the time to do so? The demand is obviously there, and dammit I want one!

OK ThinkSecret, let me get this straight, so One More Thing = New iPods, PowerBooks and Power Macs? Yeah...right... :p  Oh well, at least all of this crazy speculation will finally end in just 6 more days. :)

Not at all. I and others just resent being told that our product choices are somehow excessive by people who have no need for them themselves. It's just pathetic...

What if Apple starts selling Apple Lossless with FairPlay over iTMS? Suddenly your 80 GB iPod holds the same number of songs as an old 10 GB iPod did. That's why I want an 80 GB iPod - I have a music collection with 30 GB (and a 15 GB 3G iPod) and would like to increase my ripped music (about 2/3 of my collection) from 256 AAC to Apple Lossless.

If it's such a seemingly insignifigant update to the iPod then why is there a media invite - why not just update the product and announce it on the website?

I don't see the relevance of hosting this gathering if it's just a capacity increase and / or minor cosmetic changes.

Yeah, really. "Look guys, we added 2 mhz to our PowerMac and PowerBook line up... no not 2 ghz, just mhz.... oh and a few pixels too. And that top end iPod you have, well now there's 20 MORE gb that you can't fill with the music you don't have. These are pretty much the best products that Apple has ever introduced."

If I were press, I would be pissed if I got a stylish invitation and all the event featured was this. I don't know what it's going to be, but if it were speed bumps Apple would be commiting press suicide by making it an "event", and they're never that daft.

I'm not interested in buying anything at all from iTMS, regardless of bitrate.
Besides, apparently Lossless on an iPod is a complete battery-killer.

kick ass chips!?!

So what do you think Apple is going to do with these kick ass chips??

Report: Apple contracts chips for new mobile multimedia device
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=982

"the world's most advanced mobile multimedia processor. The VC02 can display video on 3.5 inch color LCDs and capture 8 megapixel images, making it ideal for watching TV, making videos or taking studio-quality photos on a cellphone."

I think we are going to see somthing very cool

I don't think Apple would have an event like this for just for a pb update

"one more thing"...iPods are now 10mm thinner...I don't think so

They would sell millions and millions of PDA's by christmass

Don

I have a feeling now that its going to be powerbooks with higher-res displays and iTunes movie service type thing and they'll be promoting portable movies that way. [??]

Possibly an iPod video (hey I trust this podfuture dude). Not to mention the BBC thing?

Who knows. I'm movies/video will be the focus though.

The guy who said what right to I have to dictate what peoples needs are.

Basically, I was inviting your opinion and not a tirade of abuse.
No beef please.

I wanted users to say either yes or no and give reasons, my opinion isn't cemented in my head, it can change. And I wanted to see if people could change it.

I had read somewhere that the 60GB wasn't selling much and like many other people, I've noticed that there is a big hole in the line up that is located between the 20GB & 60GB.

As for the putting lossless music on the future 80GB iPod, that's a really good reason, I suppose if I look at it like this:

Shuffle - Economy
Nano - Consumer
iPod 80GB - Pro

Just like the:

Mac Mini - Economy
iMac/iBook - Consumer
PowerMac/Powerbook - Pro.

It kills me that you guys still think a video IPOD is coming next week. There is no WAY that is going to happen, sorry guys. S.J. is against it, so thats all you need to know about it.
