vPod Please!

I for one like the idea of a vPod, in fact I've been grabbing music videos by the dozen. I rarely watch TV and would never watch a movie on such a small screen but the idea of watching videos with really good quality headphones is actually very appealing to me. 80Gb would be the minimum size for me as I would dump at least 50gb of music on it right away.

Also does anyone know if this "event" will be simulcast in the Apple stores? That's always a laugh...

the software is already here. Have you seen a PSP? I have one and love it. I put all kinds of video on it, including full movies. Its only drawback is its capicity to hold just 1gig of data.

Software yes... but easy to use software for all? No

I'm still skeptical about a CPU with low enough power consumption to go into an iPod that is powerful enough to run H.264. ;)
I've mentioned this in another thread, but there are realtime H.264 CODEC boards today, and H.264/AVC/MPEG-4part10 is aknowleged as one of the key elements in future video systems such as Blu-Ray/HD-DVD etc...

So, if Apple wants to get out in front of the pack, they could do what they did for the nano. Buy a whole bunch of the H.264 chipsets from the vendor to drive the price down now rather than when the market catches up.

Note also that ATI and Nvidia have both announced that H.264/WMV9 acceleration is a key part in their new GPUs. Could whatever Apple has behind the curtains be the first systems to include the new ATI Avivo platform announced a few weeks back?

I really really hope for new Powerbooks. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

That would be my hope as well... the higher res screens sound too good to be true. I hope the Thinksecret rumor is correct (which they usually are)

I want an updated 20gb iPod that's a little larger than a Mini, it should adopt the Nano's UI blah blah. I also think that the event might be focused on a new iTunes Movie downloading service and not necessarily a video ipod (despite lots of 'evidence'), this new movie download service could provoke powerbook updates with HD screens etc. to get more our of their service along with the airport express with video. I guess this kind of fits in with ThinkSecret's crap. However, I'm not ruling out an iPod Video. There seems to be overwhelming evidence of both. Lots of stories from friends of friends and stuff all sound pretty reliable.

There's no doubt in my mind that there is going to be something video/movie related.

Finally...somebody on target.

Is everyone still forgetting the damn red movie curtain and no updates to the videos on iTunes? There has to be something movie related or video related whether it's an iPod, or some new feature or something on the iTunes store. And the invite indicates it's something special you would think, he never says that catch phrase unless he's showing something to wow you.

You're right on the mark. Why the "theater" curtians indeed? This will be something video or movie related for sure.

Apple Store (AU) Delivery Times...

I'm in the process of buying an iBook from the Apple Store, so I've been visiting it regulary to browse accessories and the like, although - a few of the expected ship times (on base models) have changed dramatically, all coincidentally falling within a day of "the event".

Starting with the iBook/PowerBook power adapter... which isn't much, but then the PowerBooks, to the Airport Extreme (not Express) base station. One major point is there has been no change in the 12" delivery times.

Apple Portable Power Adapter : 65W - Estimated Ship: 6-8 Days
Apple PowerBook G4 15" (Both Base Models) - Estimated Ship: 5-7 Days
Apple PowerBook G4 17" (Base Model) - Estimated Ship: 5-7 Days
Apple PowerBook G4 12" (Both Base Models) - Estimated Ship: within 24 hours (no change)
AirPort Extreme Base Station (with Power over Ethernet and UL 2043) - Estimated Ship: 5-7 Days

I doubt Apple would mess with the iPod line up so soon after nano - but with Apple, who knows!

People will buy vPods because they are new and neat, even though I probably won't.

That's the only reason anyone would buy a vPod. No one in their right mind would actually buy one to watch a movie (moan all ya want, it has NO practical value). Pvp's are out there already and not doing THAT well. Again as I said in an earlier post..... I don't think the curtains are any real hint. "Oh it's a theatre that has CURTAINS and it's on the INVITATION, VIDEO IPOD!" Puhlease. If they *do* signify anything "One last curtain call for PPC".

Use ya head.

No change to shipping times for the US... all 1-2 days.

I keep about 90 GB on my laptop - sometimes to listen to (Altec XT1 speakers in the hotel, for example), but usually to download to the Nano Plus for on-the-go.
.

Wow, you must have a big harddrive in your laptop. I assume it's not a PB ?

Thank you... finally someone else that gets it. No video ipods... not gonna happen.

I just don't see a video iPod passing the Steve Jobs Test.

Gadget geeks would love one, but unless there's some transparent way to play full resolution on a full resolution large screen, then a video iPod would be merely a toy for delivering a lesser experience. It would be a gimmick device, not unlike the short-lived iPod Photo. Unless you plan on watching a movie on a crappy little screen, it makes more sense to bring a hand-full of DVDs over to a friend's house..

Well almost, I suppose I want a answer in some form. But not an argument.
Anyone know how many songs an 80GB iPod would hold.

I could do with a 10GB as I have nearly 5GB of music and could use the others for my contacts, photos and calendars.
Paying for 20GB iPod and not needing half of it. Well to sum that up, i'd be paying for an extra 10GB i don't need.

Or a 6GB Nano would be great :)

I currently own a 30GB 3rd Gen iPod. I have 40 GB of music and 10GB of photos. Much of my music is ripped at 128 MP3 or AAC and I would like to re-rip it at a better quality.

But even if I don't do that, the largest capacity iPod today is 60 GB. Actual formatted capacity is probalby more like 55 GB (don't know for sure), which would leave me with 5 GB for free space. 5 GB of room to grow is not enough to justify replacing my current iPod. I decided a while ago that I would wait until capacity grew to at least 80 before I upgrade (100 GB preferred).

I don't care that much about video. Would it be nice to have? Sure, I guess so. Do I need it? No, not really.

If everyone thinks video support is necessary to justify larger hard-drive iPods then fine, but just put out the larger ipods. Don't delay their release because your iTMS video store isn't ready to be rolled out yet...

How are you getting the video on the computer in the right format? Thats the tricky part.
PSPware piggybacks off of quicktime so it will accept any codec quicktime does along with some of its own. ive never had any problem with any video format.

While I agree with your comments about video, I wouldn't say the ipod photo was short lived. only the separate name was. Once they rolled out the color screens and photo support to all models, why keep a special name for it?

AGAIN...there is NO logic to Jobs holding a special media event to showcase retread products that are normally just quietly updated on a Tuesday with a press release. Moreover Jobs is not going to showcase dualcore G5s or PBs for the simple reason that he can't do a bake off with an Intel machine. It just wouldn't be politically smart. Also, there is no precent for Apple showing off pro computer hardware that is not part of a convention like MW, NAB, WWDC.

And an updated (non-video capable) iPod to 80GBs with a new case. That MIGHT make headlines on the Yawn Gazette. It certainly is NO reason to call out the pressies for the 2nd time in nearly a month.

I don't know what Apple is going to be showing off next week but if they were taking wagers in Vegas I'd bet the house something completely new (in the consumer electronics/home user realm) was going to take center stage.

The same program would need to do both, but i just dont see the value in putting DVD's on my computer considering how large they are.

4G iPod Secrets?

Strange. I seem to recall last autumn, when the iPod Photo and the U2 Special Edition iPods were released, that a spokesperson for Apple said something to the effect of "these new 4G iPods were built from the ground up, and they are capable of doing other things that are not apparent for the moment...."

Something like that. Does anyone else remember this?
I never did figure out what the mystery was. Part of me anticipated some kind of cool software update which would "unlock" a bunch of cool features in the 4G, but I gave up on that idea quite some time ago.

You cannot believe everything that Apple says.

Remember the Mac Mini? Apple stated that they had no plans to release a cheap Mac. Yet, less than 2 months later, alone came the Mini.

And A month ago Steve said in the not too distant future they'd be making a deal with disney to license video content.

When has this EVER been a HUUUUUUUUUGE event? It's only been blown WAY out of proportion cuz of all the vPod Madness. It's a big event because it probably *will* be the last great PPC update for pb's and maybe pm's. That's certainly enough, in my opinion, to make it sorta hoohaa.
