Dont get me wrong though, still bloody excited about my blue iPod touch - it's all about the screen - which I believe, unlike previous iPod touches they have used exactly the same screen... the last iPod touch had an inferior screen to the iPhone 4/4S... just disappointing that for the price they couldn't include the remote, and made special non-remote earPods for it - I like my remotes!!!

Oh and in the iPod touch user guide, it still mentions auto brightness - it doesnt specify that it is 4g only?

Yes, it does. In the Basics chapter, under "Adjusting brightness":

Turn Auto-brightness on or off: (iPod touch 4th generation only) Go to Settings > Brightness and Wallpaper

One thing I thought of is that it doesn't mention it's not there in the 5th gen iPod touch (later, in the settings section, it speaks of Auto brightness as a standard feature without mentioning if it's exclusive to only the 4th gen). The only thing it says is that you can't toggle it. Is it possible that it's just always on?

Here's a thought on the Light Sensor - what if they found a way to utilize the camera's for light sensitivity? I would think this would be mentioned, but maybe it's another method?

Just a thought.

A side question I have. Since the speed seems comparable to the iPhone 4S, how do games run on it compared to the iPod Touch 4g or even iPad? I realize that the speed increase will be great, but really wanted to see if anyone had any comments about how much better it will be.

I don't think so because there's a picture that shows there being no Auto brightness setting at all in settings.

After watching the iPhone 5 keynote, I was really shocked and happy at all the upgrades the touch got.

However even with the improvements, I'm still happy with my 4G touch. Using the keynote comparison:

4 Inch screen vs 3.5: Personally I'd rather have it at 3.5 inches as that is not too short or too long for me. Also since I put it in my pocket, the longer a device is, higher chance the screen might crack in my pocket while sitting down.

A5 vs A4: For me the A4 is fine. Obviously 2-3 years down the road some apps will run slow or not be supported but I'm fine with it. What I can currently do with it, is enough for me.

Camera: 5g is better but my pics look ok. Certainly not great but not horrible either. Low light makes it awful but I don't take pics in the pitch-dark.

Video: 1080p is better but 720p suits me just fine.

Wireless: 5g upgraded to 802.11 dual-band n but 4g already supports wireless b/g/n and is fast.

Lighting: Now this annoys me. The new adaptor/wall charger needed to use 5g is a pain compared to 4g.

Siri: While a nice feature, the novelty wears off quick. Voice control gets the job done for me but I don't use it.

iOS 6 vs 5.1.1: Some may like iOS6 but for me staying on iOS5.1.1 is currently better. More free RAM available on 4g is a major reason.

I believe those with 3rd Gen and lower- the 5G is a great upgrade. But those with 4G should stay with what they have unless one of the points above is absolutely important to you. Or unless you upgraded 4G to iOS6 which makes the device not so smooth.

Look at the flower petals. iPod touch photo lacks detail and sharpness. It can't be simply explained just the difference in megapixels. iPod's camera lacks some optics quality vs iPhone.

iPod touch:

iPhone:

Of course the camera is waaay better than iPod touch 4th gen. Still, I was expecting at least the quality of iPhone 4S camera.

The 2 devices have obviously chosen different focus points. The iPod Touch is focused further away so the wall and distant plants are sharper than in the iPhone photo.

This comparison says nothing about the quality of the cameras, especially since full-sized shots are not available.

If anything, I would guess the iPod Touch camera may be slightly inferior to the iPhone 4S because it's much thinner. But I think they will apply the lessons learned from designing the iPhone 5 camera, and it will be pretty close to the 4S.

I'm confused about the earphones packed with the new iPod Touch. According to an article on 9to5 mac, they say:

"Macotakara posted a couple unboxing videos for the new iPods, revealing the fifth-gen iPod touch comes with Apple’s new EarPods equipped with remote and mic. The earphones packaged with the new nano’s still lack any physical controls but do include the new EarPods design:"

Is this true or were they incorrect?

did you even see ipod touch spec? it has microphone on the bottom. it has now Siri. it doesn't make any sense without mic & remote of earpods. apple is so lame.

The mic isn't on the bottom, actually. The tech specs page lists the only mic as being on the back. It labels the holes on the bottom of the iPod as the built-in speaker. However, the fact that it has Siri now should warrant the inclusion of the EarPods with the mic and remote. I was quite looking forward to being able to skip tracks use Siri, and even make Skype calls while the iPod is still in my pocket. Unfortunately, I'm the type of guy that will do exactly what Apple wants. I'll be visiting a store later to pick up a pair of EarPods with the remote and mic...

They are comparing pictures taken with the iPod Touch 5 and with the iPhone 5. I see no comparison pictures taken with the iPhone 4S. I'll wait till a site like dpreview evaluates and compares the cameras before rushing to judgement on the iPod Touch 5 camera.

Well, if it bothers you THAT much, just go to the Apple store, let them know that your EarPods came defective ;), and when they swap it out, they should give you one of the pairs with a mic and remote.

And knowing how some people are on here, save the comments about how doing that is wrong and whatnot.

They're wrong. I looked at the "What's in the box" lists for both the iPod touch and iPhone 5 on Apple's site. The iPod touch page just says "EarPods", while the iPhone 5 page says "EarPods with Remote and Mic". Looks like only the iPhone gets them packaged in, although the Remote and Mic ones are the only ones available on the store.

Oh and in the iPod touch user guide, it still mentions auto brightness - it doesnt specify that it is 4g only?

Check out page 46 of the guide. It states the following:

Adjusting brightness
You can manually adjust the brightness of the screen. On iPod touch 4th generation, you can turn on Auto-Brightness to have iPod touch use the built-in ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the brightness.

Adjust the screen brightness:* Go to Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper, then drag the slider.
Turn Auto-Brightness on or off:* (iPod touch 4th generation only) Go to Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper.

However there could be a blatant error there. I guess we won't know for sure until someone gets their hands on one. I can't see why Apple would exclude it considering iPhone and even MacBooks have it.

I have a theory. What if you just can't toggle it? It could be there, but be on by default and unable to be switched off. My iMac from late 2006 has an ambient light sensor, there is no reason why the iPod touch released in 2012 shouldn't. Maybe it's just not optional anymore? I hope that's the case... I really like auto-brightness

I think the light sensor would be present on the white front glass.

If you watch the video closely starting at 3:55, you'll see that the Earpods that come with the iPod touch don't have the remote/microphone. I honestly find this upsetting.

It is odd that they don't include the remote and mic, especially since the 5th gen has Siri. Also, the latest iPod touch User Guide For iOS6 suggests that earpods with remote and mic are needed to use Voice Control.

Exactly.

This is so disappointing. $199 device? Sure.

1. No A6
2. Worse screen
3. They even made the A5 weaker! 512MB of RAm
4. No light sensor
5. No vibrations

In what way is the screen worse?

Perhaps why siri is off be default. If it were "on" then they would get lots of returns about it not working with the earphones.

As far as I know, Siri is off by default on every device she comes on. I could be wrong though. Someone want to either back me up on this or correct me on it?

It was off by default when I installed iOS 6 on my moms iPad.

Not quite the same, I know. I wondered if it was for privacy paranoid people?

But they don't even sell the earPods without remote - they went out of their way to give the new iPod touch an inferior pair than you can get in store, and the remote is one of the things that really makes a difference with a touch based iPod!
They included a random loop, it just seems tight they skimped on the remote!

That would be because the loop doesn't cost a thing - they are scraps of material left over from iPad Smart Covers and Smart Cases. In my opinion, the loop is cheesy and pretty useless, but oh well, what do I know.

It's just something to throw away

Does the new iPod touch have the same retina display as the iPhone 5? Because I know the 4G was pretty bad color saturation and viewing angle wise.
