it is unclear if the new iPod touch would have many new features, as the device has become a niche product used mostly by children and some developers as an affordable testing device.

It's a niche product because Apple refused to update it with new features not the opposite. Every one said iPad mini was niche too but look at the excitement now after Apple gave it a basic specs update. If Apple took proper care of their product line these devices wouldn't be considered niche.

Is it too much to ask for to get iPhones in these colors?! Sick of grey/white/silver/black. (And no, I'm not buying a lesser iPhone to get colored backs)
I know, right? I'd absolutely love it if they broke out of the grey/silver/gold colours for the top end models.

This is actually the first iPod touch that I've been looking forward to.

who is apple aiming these at these days? kids?

That's my intention for it! I want a device my daughter can play with that isn't an expensive phone and can't accidentally dial 911 through the multiple "Emergency" ways they operate.

It's also smaller than any iPad.

I want that to be real but I have a hard time believing Apple would bring the iPad-esque design (based on the edges tbh) to the iPod before the iPhone. Happy to be wrong!

EDIT: Looks like EVLeaks watermark in the corner? If so then I'd think it's true (and a surprise move).

I miss the old iPod Nanos that came in 8-9 colours.

Same. I wish they'd take a page out of Google's book at least and use some accent colours.

I mean this as a genuine question... but who's the demo for this device? Doesn't really seem like it has a purpose nowadays. Kids?

Do we think they're going to go with a 4-inch screen in 2019?

Could they go with 4.7 inches for the iPods, like the older iPhones?

I might actually consider getting one, even though I have a perfectly fine iPhone. Depends on the storage-to-pricing ratio.

I like "the thing that plays music" to be as separate as possible from "the thing I use to do work". I have looked into other dedicated digital music players and from a UI/UX perspective none are as good as Apple's. (Additionally, Sony's Walkman - the best alternative to an iPod out there on balance IMO - is incredibly expensive for a device with low in-built storage that will largely be used in non-ideal sonic environments for non-reference listening. Apple's devices hit the best balance of sound quality, price, and user experience).

I know that the above puts me in a very small minority.

This is nonetheless exciting news to me because I have a strong affinity for iPods and am very glad to see that they aren't quite dead yet.

I'd guess fake. Because even if it didn't have FaceID, there would still be a front facing camera of some type for FaceTime calls, so there would either be a notch or thick bezel. And if there's no FaceID, then there needs to be a home button, doesn't there? I guess it could be an on screen software button. And I can't see doing away with headphone jack on something aimed at kids. I guess they could include the dongle.

It is Apple's five days of Christmas in March, lol. Hopefully we get AirPods 2 and AirPower to cap off the week! This is an interesting strategy because it keeps the press talking about Apple's new hardware for an entire week. Kind of a smart way to do it, to be honest.

Wouldn’t expect that. PR wise, it’s rare to see a product announcement on a Thursday or Friday as it gets lost in the weekend. In addition, they most likely would have led the week off with those. If they are coming soon, it will be at the event.
