It's a niche product because Apple refused to update it with new features not the opposite. Every one said iPad mini was niche too but look at the excitement now after Apple gave it a basic specs update. If Apple took proper care of their product line these devices wouldn't be considered niche.
Which they don’t. So niche product.

I hope this new iPod Touch has a bigger screen. That will be the deciding factor for me on what devices to use as control panels in my house for HomeKit.

For data, iPad mini too big to carry around. Plus who makes phone calls any more? 5.5” screen iPod touch with LTE would be the killer device.

But where's the differentiation then between an LTE iPod Touch and an iPhone? Unless I'm overlooking something, I don't see any sense in Apple having two distinct product lines with the only difference being the ability to make voice calls, particularly as the components and cost would be pretty much the same. I think the iPhone already is the iPod Touch with mobile connectivity.

I really hope it isn't just a spec bump, and they actually do something new. Like removing the home button and giving it Face ID.

i have a friend that has been using the iPod touch as his day to day cell phone for many years. I'm sure he will be happy for an upgrade.

ive considered doing it myself, and might be considering it again depending on the specs and price.

This is a great way to do things and seems like Apple has learned its lesson about needing to do updates. It'll be very cool if they do a new iPod touch as the new graphic showed all screen front.

I'm just enjoying the karma of the fact that we finally seem to have reached the stage where no one calls it the iTouch any more. I can actually feel my blood pressure dropping as I type this.

I hesitate to mention this... but there was an FCC testing setup where it was labeled as iTouch by presumably Apple-employees.

Pathetic... what is next, the Newton upgrade?

I guess Apple needs to clear old inventory. So much for innovation.

I used an iPod Touch for a long time as a dedicated household media streaming device. I only stopped using it because an iOS update made it so slow it was basically unusable.

With updated specs it's a pretty useful device -- where we are with near-ubiquitous wifi, FaceTime Audio, Skype... if you wanted, you could do 90% of what you can do on an iPhone with an iPod Touch, and pay $0 a month in wireless fees.

Not necessarily. Cellular could work on an ipod touch. If Apple basically treats it like an ipad nano with data only plans like an ipad. I think that would be pretty cool. Wouldn’t eat into iphone sales, yet would definitely sell to people who don’t want a phone.

Duh, PRICE!! iPad mini LTE $529, so iPod Touch LTE would have to be even less. Hence MUCH MUCH less than equivalent iPhone.

It is good to know that Apple is working on and releasing products that virtually nobody cares for.
