As someone who doesn't have an iphone and uses their ipod touch 6th gen as their main travel camera, i would love an update to the ipod touch if it got the current cameras in the iphones. Or at least the ipad pros. I currently use an ipad mini with an unlimited data plan from AT&T that i am grandfathered in on. So i never felt the need to get an iphone. I was actually going to buyt an iphone just for the camera, but dont know if i can buy one without signing up for a phone plan. So if Apple did announce a new touch with a kick ass camera, i'd buy one in a heartbeat and save myself a bunch of $$$$. But i doubt they will. I think the ipod touch is going to be discontinued like the shuffle just was.

You can buy an unlocked iPhone SE from Apple, no phone plan required! You'd just have to pay it off in full when purchasing. It's $349 + tax, which is about $384.77 total here in Los Angeles, CA. The SE is about the same size as the iPod touch, has a 12 mp rear camera, and 32 gb at the price I just stated. Definitely look into it! You can also connect the phone at a later time if you choose to (not required).

Why not buy an iPhone SE for $130 locked to a ****** carrier and use it as a iPod? :D

As someone said earlier, they should just call it iPad nano. The iPod can then officially die but still live on in that form. I think making the display just slightly larger would be good too (and getting rid of some of those bezels).

Too confusing, are we then just changing the name for the sake of it? What curse does the iPod name give onto us where we have to change of the name?

Good point. However right now the iPod lives in the Music section of the website, but it can do much more than that. If the display were slightly bigger it could become very popular with kids again as an iPhone, just without the cellular abilities, etc. The iPod touch is much more capable than a standalone music player should be. It is pretty much an iPad, just a lot smaller.

I think it should get some kind of new name though, now that it’s the only remaining iPod. I could see Apple just dropping the “Touch” from the name without even updating the actual hardware at all. The only thing stopping them is that they’d have to update the packaging, which costs money. So because of that, if Apple does make a new iPod (which I’m hoping they will), then I don’t think it’ll include “touch” in its name.

I just hope that Apple doesn't discontinued iPod touch in the gold color.

Do you mean the colors of the iPod touch or did you accidentally add colors in there? Because I'd be happy no matter what, hell a Jet Black iPod touch would be hella sexy

And check this out

Oops.

I meant to say "I hope Apple doesn't discontinued the gold color for the iPod touch line."

Yes the space gray iPod touch does look really good with the black front. Thanks for posting that picture both of those look great.

Edited to add: A larger and an updated iPod touch would be nice, too.

If I can find it, I have a picture of a Jet Black iPad, it looks fantastic

Give me some time and I’ll find it and update it, love seeing the Jet Black color on other devices (except when you buy it, scratch it the **** up, and then call it ugly)

Update: @determined09 not exactly a Jet Black iPad, but wouldn’t say it’s a let down, think Apple needs to axe the blue color and the white front though

And I’d love to see all iOS devices adapt rounded corners (although this could be done in software like how my jainbroken phone is or even the iPhone X)

Great photos. Thanks for the update. The rose gold iPod touches look really good.

Edited to add:

My guess is that the iPod found in the firmware will be released in a surprise press release right around late November. As for specs, it'll probably be equivalent to the SE/2017 iPad.

I’d be pissed if it was SE equivalent, the SE isn’t old, but it’s not that great

And maybe Apple will do a November event with iPhone X, iPod 7, HomePod, MacBook, and iOS 11.x with iCloud Messages and Apple Pay Cash

Nah, SE equivalent is actually about 7 equivalent due to the smaller screen. As long as Apple doesn't underclock the A9 it like they did to the A8 on the 6G, the 7G should be a speedy little device. The A9 may be two years old, but new processors are reaching the point of diminishing returns, and even if the A11 has double the Geekbench scores of the A9 in both Single and Multi core, it's certainly not going to be double as fast in real-world usage. And the A9 already performs exceptionally on iOS 10 and good on iOS 11 (11 will get better once .1/.2 comes out definitely; A10 is the same currently).

Sorry for that essay lol, just stating my 2 cents. I agree newer processors are always better, but I find it unlikey Apple will outclass the SE with a Touch, and I also find it unlikely that Apple would sell an A10/A11 in the $199 Touch.

I hope this happens. It seems like the focus was all on the iPhone X during the Sep event!

Yes, the 8 barely got any time on stage

As for the $199 price, I might be in the minority but I’ll pay $249 if I can get an at least A10 in that babe

And the SE is a 6s equivalent device

Also would love a mini Taptic Engine in the iPod

I'm probably not getting a Touch as the SE works well to fit that niche in terms of form-factor (as well as being a phone), but if I was I would pay $249 too (as long as it was at least 64GB).

Also, I know the SE is on paper a 6s equivalent device, but it outperforms it in the real world, and is pushed more near iPhone 7 territory due to the small screen. Doesn't outperform 7+ though b/c it falls short of its 3gb of RAM.

The A10 and A9 are nearly the same real world. If it's coming out next year it should get the A11 for longevity. SE for sure but the touch should as well.

I agree that the A9 and A10 are basically the same in real world usage, but it's not like they won't have longevity either. The leaps in terms of real-word performance are always getting smaller from generation of iPhone to generation, but the Geekbench score leaps are getting larger. Weird.

Later versions of iOS will probably make the differences more apparent. Both the 4s and 5 were pretty quick on iOS 6 but now the 4s is much slower.

Apple takes forever to update the iPod touch so longevity is very important. The A10 and A9 are like a slightly better A8 and A7 to me. (A match power wise) Since the A10 is designed with efficient cores and isn't usually using its full power, I can see them slowing down at around the same time.

In fact, in this video the 6s outperforms the iPhone 7:

I feel like Apple will do something to make sure the Touch gets less longevity than the other A9 devices, like underclocking it. I wonder if Apple did that to the 6G just so they could cut it off in the same year as the A7 crop devices (I firmly believe they may do that lol).

The iPod touch 6 has bad battery life so that's probably why. They would have to give it at least A10 just for better efficiency. In fact, that could be why it got A8 instead of A7.

I'm hoping the 5s/A7 gets an extra version of iOS just like the 3GS and 4s did. Then even if they drop the iPod with the A7 devices it'll at least get iOS 12.
